Vohana clears her throat sharply, indicating to Ruvenel he should stay quiet. "Yes, good sirs. What is the problem?" She gives them her most charming smile.
The Zhent returns Vohana's charming smile with a stern face, his grey blue eyes are sunk deep into his skull but somehow still seems to pierce to the very bone like a sharpened spear.
"Where are you coming from?" the man's voice keeps it's air of authority, the man's soldier companions have now come to a stop and have spread out across the road, their hands rest on the hilts of their scimitars and maces.
Vohana felt white hot rage toward Ruvenel. He's going to get us all killed if he doesn't keep his mouth shut, she thought. Quick thinking, and Vohana came up with a story. "We are but a group of travelers in search of work. We are coming from Shadowdale and heading toward Hillsfar. However, we've been told Hillsfar doesn't have much in the way of work. So, we will be heading toward Dagger Falls. Pray, do you know if there is work available there?"
The Zhent rider cocked an eyebrow, "Hillsfar you say, that would have been mighty unwise of you, work or no." he looks the group up and down for a moment, "What kind of business are you looking to partake of?"
"Well, I am a scholar, so I am looking for a library where I can study, or a wizard where I could apprentice. The others," Vohana waved her hand toward the rest of her riding companions. "... are looking for work as farmers, a couple can do mercenary work."
"I'm a sucker for the water. Figure a place like that gotta need good navigators ta get goods down the Tesh to the Moonsea. Ship always needs a good crew at least." Ruvenel shrugs.
The Zhent rider nodded, "Farmers, Scholars, Sailors, and Mercenaries. Seems a priest among you, blessing us on behalf of Moradin. That's an awfully nice shield you have there Dwarf..." a few of the foot soldiers snicker as the Zhent Rider addresses Hjol. "...You know, the constable has put a toll on this road for anyone traveling into Dagger Falls"
"We were unaware," Vohana said quickly, trying to draw attention back to herself. "What exactly is the toll here? I'm unsure we can pay, but we can certainly try!"
The Zhent Rider kept his eyes on Hjol for a moment longer before turning back to Vohana, "You know, you've been a most pleasurable little gnome to talk to. I'm going to give you a discount, 20 gold for the whole lot of ya." a sick greedy grin spread across the Zhents face.

Vohana batted her eyelashes at him and blushed. "You're so sweet!" She dug around in her pack and produced 10 gold coins. "Are you sure you couldn't take 10? I'm afraid that's all we can afford. I won't be eating for a week as it is!"
The Zhent straightened up, adjusting his chainmail coat in the process. "10 Gold is all you can come up with huh, well how about a trade then. I'll take your 10 gold, and his shield..." the rider pointed at Hjol's shield as he said the words. "...It'll make cleaning out my horses stable a lot easier" the footman erupted in laughter at the joke.

"Surely there's something you would rather have than an old shield?" Vohana was started to get a little scared. This wasn't going as well as she had hoped.
Guldrum will start quietly tapping his foot. Fed up with these hooligans trying to take our gold. Ready, itching for a fight to break out.

The laughter died down a bit folllowing Vohana's question. The Zhent rider cocked his eyebrow again, "Well well, now I don't know. What is it that you have to offer me"
Vohana's smile never once faded as they started laughing, but realization hit her, and it felt like an electric shock through her body. "I... well... I don't..." she stammered as she looked around the cart.
Ruvenel whispers, "Bail? They ain't got bu' one horse?"

A dwarf with a canoe on his back? What could go wrong?

Ruvenel makes a string of breathy, whistley noises that seems to conclude the song he was whistling in a strange sort of climax.

OOC: History check on if I know if Hillsfar is a common place for people to look for work. I'd also like to know if gnomes are common in this area. 23
