The trip through the portal was unnerving to Asledin, having never experienced that particular form of travel. It took great willpower, and a little peer pressure, to get himself to walk into it. It came down to two things: First, he did not want to appear cowardly to the others in his group. He was convinced that his skills were quite inferior to most of the others, and he did not be thought of as weak, or afraid. Second, it was a paying job.
The job was easy enough, escort a fairly wealthy trader. Asledin has done a few of them now, since leaving the farm several months ago. This trader was going to a place called Haven, a name that has never entered the ears of Asledin. He was told, if all went as planned, the group would arrive near the settlement and only needed to ensure their bosses safety until his goods were unloaded. If things did not go as planned, there would be some traveling involved, and their pay would be adjusted accordingly. Things went as planned, the traders' goods were delivered safe and sound, and Asledin found himself in Haven with a few more coins in his purse. Now what...
Eager to shed the weight of the shield on his left arm, Asledin glances around for a place that will keep him out of the way of foot traffic, and having found one, steps over and releases his shield, leaning it against his leg. With that done, the pack is shed and Asledin begins the ritual of organizing the contents of his pack and tying his shield to the outward facing side of it. When he is satisfied, Asledin stands from a crouch and stretches greatly, a smile forming on his lips. After a big sigh, he looks around, listens and takes in the smells of the marketplace.

(I hope this is the correct use of the dice, and action. I haven't played this game since the release of AD&D, yes this dates me. Please feel free to line me out on things. Thanks.)
(Welcome! I’m one of the DMs and also a player- onetime ad&d myself. In the game I play a bookish elven wizard named Cerlinde. It’s a fun group of people we have so far, and some exciting plans)
From his current just out of the way location, Asledin can observe a steady stream of people making their way through the MarketPlace. Some are merely passing through the open area as they travel from one district to another, while others seem to be on their way to Myk's Magic Shoppe, Thia's Apothecary, or other vendors in the MarketPlace itself. There seems to be no dominant race represented amongst these folks, although there are a few more gnomes than one might expect. Rather, there appear to be an eclectic mix of cultures represented, a bright and occasionally jarring array of colours and patterns. No one seems to be too bothered by it as they all go about their business, and no one seems to pay you any particular mind.
While taking this all in, Asledin sees a Bulletin Board, on one side of which appears to be a crude map of Haven. People are regularly stopping by, taking brief looks at the board, then moving along.
(The map is labelled via numbers, while the listed locations are not. The MarketPlace is the open area in the middle, while 1 = The Officials, 2 = The Burrows, 3 = The Crafts, 4 = The Scholars, 5 = The Shopps, 6 = The Shadows. You can peruse the lore to find a place or person of interest, or if you have a general idea of what you'd like to do, let us know and we'll point you in the right direction. Similarly, if there's something that Asledin would like to do that isn't represented in the lore yet, let us know and we'll cook something up.)
(For the rolls, I'm guessing you rolled a physical dice and put in the result of 19 with your +2 WIS modifier to get 21. We generally prefer to use the forum's dice roller so we can "see" the dice roll. For this particular roll, the syntax is straightforward - [roll ]1d20+2[/ roll]. There are fancy ways to deal with advantage, crits, etc. There are also nice ways to mark up actions, spells, monsters, etc., using tooltips that make it a little easier to play by post. Depending on your experience with such things, it may seem daunting at first, but it's not too tough to get the hang of it. Let us know if you have questions, as we're happy to help!)
(Finally, I may not go back that far, but I played AD&D 2e for about 10 years in the '90s, then got into 5e at the start of 2021. As you can tell, you're in good company here! :-)
(Thank you both, I am looking forward this! As for the dice roll, I am not sure what I have done wrong there so let me take you through my actions. I typed the words 'Perception check:', then, space, then I clicked the dice roller. A pop up appeared with options for the roll. After a little research to determine what was needed for the check, I selected the 'Basic' tab. Under the tab I selected 1 dice, left the die type at d20, 'Add to result' got a 2, 'Advantage or drop dice' was left on 'no', and 'How many dice to drop' was left blank. This was placed at the cursor " [rol]1d20+2[/rol]" ((I removed the 2nd L on the words Roll so it would not run the equation on this reply.))and when I hit 'Post Reply' it printed the number 21. If I mouse over the result, it shows me the dice roll plus the modifier. Did I miss a step?)
(I know that hand holding can sometimes be a pain for some folks, so I do appreciate it greatly!)
(Oh geez, it either glitched when I looked at it earlier, which occasionally happens, or I just misread the pop-over, which is more likely. You've got it right! Sorry for the confusion. Trying to do too many things at once over here ;-)
Asledin's eyes come to rest on a small structure in the center of the clearing in front of him. It appears to be a posting board, not unlike the boards his has seen in nearly every town he has visited. He thinks to himself that there may be work for him there, and it might be worth taking a look at. Asledin shoulders his pack, and with a quick glance around checks the ties and draw on his purse. Satisfied of its security, he steps out among the throng of people and strolls over towards the board.
Asledin continues to take in his surroundings as he walks, trying to be aware of other pedestrians along the way. He doesn't wish to bump into anyone. “Quite the place”, he thinks, “plenty here.” He spots a sign, to his right, “Myk's Magic Shoppe”, he mumbles. He quickly scrutinizes the small, plain, colorful tent and thinks, “There must not be a high need for that stuff here, all the better...”. Asledin notices, and makes a mental note of, The Copper Dragon Tavern. “Hmhmm, now we are talkin'.”.
Asledin approaches the board and looks over the parchment that has been attached to it. “Disguise Hat, 600gp, pfft, wow.”, Asledin thinks to himself. He reads the post on Halfling Weed and wonders if that is anything like the Noble Skunk he used to find back home. Asledin reads a post from a Drow looking for work, “Join the crowd.”, he thinks. Asledin glances around for ink and quill, and upon seeing none, frowns and turns towards the Copper Dragon.
Asledin enters the tavern and looks around. The place is fairly clean, good sized, and thankfully, mostly empty. He notices the stage, also empty, the dart boards, empty, and the card tables. The air is filled with mouthwatering aromas from the kitchen. A group of four are sitting at a card table, playing a card game. It is unclear to Asledin, at a quick glance, whether the four know each other, but it is obvious they can handle themselves. Not wanting to stare too long, he turns and approaches the bar.
Approaching the bar, Asledin sees a woman, half-elven, doing some general tidying, arranging, and inventorying. She appears to be on auto-pilot and it takes a few moments for her to realize that a new patron has arrived. She puts down a rag that she had been using to wipe down some steins before hanging them on the rack above the bar, lets out a sigh that turns into a yawn, covers her mouth, then rubs her eyes. At the end of all of this, a display for which she apparently lacks the energy to attempt to conceal, she looks up at Asledin with a warm, genuine smile. "G'morning to ya and welcome to the Copper Dragon. What'll ya have?" Asledin can see that the woman's obvious weariness is written all over her face, with dark circles under her otherwise bright eyes, the first hints of crow's feet, and a few greys standing out in her dark hair. Her clothes are plain and functional for someone in the business of running a tavern.
Asledin returns the womans smile, with a hint of concern in his eyes, "Good morning. I'll have cheese and bread with water.". Asledin frowns slightly and asks, "You ok there? Look like my pop during harvest, trying to make market in time." Asledin removes his pack and sets it on the floor in front of him, using it to prop his right foot on, then returns his attention to the bar keeper.
The woman chuckles and waves her hand dismissively. "Oh gosh, don't worry about me. I imagine I look more like your mom during the first few years of your life!", she says with a wink. "I was up with the baby last night, but one of our employees has fallen ill, so I have to cover for him this morning. Like the harvest, the tavern waits for no man ... or woman." She looks you over with a slight frown. "You sure you don't want a menu? We have a few things you might find more satisfying than just cheese and bread, although our selection of those items is quite good as well. And I don't recall seeing you around here before. New to Haven or just new to the Copper Dragon?"
Asledin smiles and nods his head, "New baby, congratulations. I could only imagine, but I suppose they can be demanding. My mother has regaled with stories of my childhood a time or two, and some tales weren't told with a smile. ", Asledin chuckles. After nodding towards the kitchen, he says "I think your right, what I am smelling from that kitchen is no bread and cheese. I'll have that menu, please, and right again, I am new to Haven. I just finished an escort and thought I'd grab a bite."
"High highs and low lows so far, I'd say. I trust it will level out at some point, but only time will tell. Anyway, I think you've made the right choice in expanding your meal options." She grabs a menu from behind the bar and slides it across to Asledin. "The Hangover Breakfast is a favourite, but you seem sober as a bird. Let me know if you care to change that condition!", she says with a wink. "You don't seem any worse for wear from your escort work. Bringing in some new arrivals? From where do you hail? Most folks just pop in randomly, and most of those not by choice."
Menu Pan-fried Chicken and Greens Ale Roast Pork and Potatoes Mead Cheese and Greens Omelet Wine Cheese and Vegetable Platter Dwarven Stout Mushroom and Rice Stew Gnome Clover Mead Roasted Turnip with Bacon Elven Blackberry wine Hangover Breakfast Halfling Butterbeer Stew of the Day Milk Side of Bread and Butter Tea
Asledin excepts the menu from the bar tender and holds it in front of himself, listening to her before looking it over. Asledin grins when she offers to change his state of sobriety. Asledin says, "Aye, the job went very well. I was escorting, well, I and two others, were escorting a trader. He had some items for one of the shops. I hail from a small village near the Sword Coast. Jus' a little group of farms, really.". Asledin nods, "I very nearly passed on the job...I did not wish to use the portal, truth told, but I made it." Asledin briefly frowns in thought, then says, "What about you? Are you native to Haven, or were you brought here as well?"
"I've been here a few years. Originally from Yartar, a Sword Coast native like yourself, used to be an adventurer. I came to Haven looking for more opportunities for excitement and coin, but I've been marooned here since the Tearing. Only happened a few months after I arrived, too! I carried on for a bit exploring the area and such, but I met my wife, Ziza, and she convinced me that running this place would be more lucrative, and safer, in the long run. So here we are! And what are you looking for now that you've survived planar travel and made it to Haven?"
"Yartar", Asledin says, "Never been there, but I have delt with a few merchants and traders from that place.". Asledin frowns slightly and continues, "Merciless barterers that lot! What one band paid for our eggs should've been punishable by law...". Asledin snaps out of his reverie and says, "I have met a few adventurers myself, not many, but a few. They get to drinkin' and spinnin' tales, some sounding too crazy to be true. When I hear them, I think that is something I'd like to do, but I am a farmer and would likely get myself into something I would regret. I suppose I will look for the next paying job and go where that takes me." Asledin shrugs. "So, you got a family...Where did the k... never mind...you're earning, you're safe, right? How's that working for ya?" Asledin frowns in thought and looks over the menu. Asledin stabs his finger at an item on the menu and says, "Pork and Potatoes with an ale please." Looking back at the tender, still frowning, he asks, "What is the Tearing?".
Theran chuckles a bit at both this farmer's recollection of interactions with merchants from Yartar and his fumbling past the nature of her family. "Sounds like you've got the measure of a shrewd trader from Yartar about right. They do know their way around a deal. And as for adventurers, there are certainly those that tell stories that greatly exceed the truth of the matter, but I can assure you from personal experience that there is quite a lot of mess and mayhem lurking out there. It takes a special kind to want to deal with that on any regular basis, but I found it rewarding enough for a time. Ages one prematurely, though, almost as much as having a little one to look after!" She smiles and chuckles to herself again. "Pork and potatoes with an ale coming right up, excellent choice!" She wanders to the back and yells something to the cook, then returns to the bar. "So you're not too familiar with the particulars of Haven, are ya? It's always been a funny place, at least when it comes to getting to it and from it. A couple years back, there was a wizard, Holbart was his name, that was conducting some kind of research on the so called planar problem. Whatever he did really cocked things up and we've been dealing with the consequences ever since. It's settled down considerably since that time, but people randomly pop in from places I've never heard of and people get sucked up and deposited who knows where. It makes getting here and getting home a tricky proposition at best. I'm surprised you weren't warned of it before you signed on for the job." She looks at Asledin sympathetically. "You might find that you're stuck here for some time before you can safely make it back to that farm town you're from ... "
Asledin nods as he listens to Theran speak of adventuring. His brows raise when she gets to the parts about travelling to and from Haven. His jaw drops when he hears about being stranded. "Stuck here, eh? No, I wasn't informed of this before we entered that portal.". Asledin rubs his stubbled chin while he mulls over something in his head. "Ya know, the fellow was a bit shifty, thinking back, but the real question was about his bodyguard." Asledin makes a sign with his hands, forming quotations with his fingers, as he says bodyguard. "That fellow was something to see. Big as an ox, shrouded in darkness, dark clothing, hood, and quiet. Not a sound from that fella throughout the whole trip. Creepy." Asledin shivers, then says, "I don't know what they brought here, never saw it, but we didn't travel with a mule and cart or anything, which would be normal to me. The bodyguard carried the goods on his back.". "We delivered to a tent over in the shop area. We weren't allowed in, and as soon as they came back out, we were paid and released from our duty.". Asledin shakes his head slowly. "Might have a few words with that merchant...". Asledin frowns, "You know, we started with six escorts, but he released three of them. He said he didn't want to be conspicuous. I recall thinking that his bodyguard took any chance of anonymity." He shrugs again, "Well, I guess we will see. That reminds me, do you have ink and paper? I thought of posting myself on the board out there, still gotta live, and livin' takes coin."' Asledin chuckles, but it is an empty gesture.
Theran frowns slightly at Asledin's description of the bodyguard. "I'm sorry that you weren't given a better description of what you were in for. Progress is being made every day in resolving our portal problem, as it's often called. Cassandra is quite relentless and talented to boot!" Asledin notices Theran smile and place her hands over her abdomen as she speaks. "Do you know who operates that particular tent your menacing bodyguard made the delivery to? I like to keep tabs on any potential trouble coming to our community." Theran then goes to the back of the bar and grabs a piece of parchment and a quill, then passes it over to Asledin. "There's usually something or other popping up before too long to keep a fledgling adventurer busy. Take heart and let me know if I can help."
"I didn't see a sign, but I could walk you to it. Thank you for the parchment, and the pledge, I may take you up on it.". Asledin scrawls a few words on the parchment and returns the quill. "It looks like a have a few minutes before the food is up, I will get this pinned up and return shortly.". Asledin slides off the stool and shoulders his pack. He then grabs the flyer and heads out of the tavern. On his way, he casts a quick glance at the occupants of the card table. Once outside, he is forced to stop to let his eyes adjust to the brightness of the morning. Asledin glances at the sun, looks toward the sign board, then glances back at the sun. He stares at the sun as long as he can take it, then looks away with a frown and a slow shake of his head. Asledin walks over to the sign board, mumbling to himself. Along the way, he takes a quick glance at the sun. At the board he seeks and finds an unused pin and attaches his flyer to a empty space on the board. After satisfying himself that it was secure, he heads back to the tavern. Apon entry to the tavern, Asledin steals another look at the card players, then drops his pack in front of the stool he was using and sits down. Asledin's foot returns to the top of the pack. He looks over to Theran and asks, "Who is Casandra? She a Lady, Baroness, Mayor perhaps?". Asledin frowns and points up and away from himself and says, "What is....the sun, it....". Asledin shakes his head and lowers his hand. "Never mind."

Asledin briefly frowns in thought, then says, "What about you?
