Avarice descends into the chessboard swirling amidst the infinite expanse of the Astral Sea. The surrounding scape of stars and galaxies could be considered beautiful - if you weren't so alone in this empty space. As soon as Avarice touches foot to the square right of Ragnar, he instantly feels the weight of white, priest-like robes draping his figure. Ragnar's armor now seems almost even more regal - while Avarice has taken the mantle of a bishop.
Similarly, Wulgar and Keyleth touch down on their respective places; Wulgar, to the far corner of the board, feels a spectral suit of armor in the make of a guard faintly outline his form, while Keyleth now seems dressed in white-clothed regal attire.
Varan looks at the board. We have no knights yet... then something occurs to him. "We have no pawns. This would leave us at an impossible disadvantage. There is nothing to screen our strong pieces."
Varan despises chess. He settles into one of the knight spaces.

Mulligan watches all with a mild amusement. The idea of worrying of ones position when the rules are dictated by one who wants us all to fail seems a bit ridiculous… He floats down towards a pawn position to illustrate the futility of it all, but reconsiders at the last moment an takes the remaining knights position.

Varan and Mulligan each concede to take the mantle of a knight. Each touches down to the chessboard adrift in the terrifying Astral Sea - and suddenly find themselves cloaked in white, ornately fashioned armor. Gazinoth shrugs, gives a nervous swallow, and reluctantly drifts towards the opposite end of Wulgar - taking the place of a rook.
The board reacts nearly immediately. A fizzle of light shines along the unoccupied spaces of the white side's team - mirror copies of the marbled figures on the opposing end of the board fill up the spaces of the pawns, and the on the remaining vacant bishop's square now stands a priestly figure dressed in similar garb to Avarice.
And, with the dull sound of stone and metal scraping against scabbards, the pieces surge to life - and, contrary to what may have been expected, begin moving forth simultaneously. This is no chess game - this is a battlefield in the shape of a chess match.

Mulligan leaps into the silvery sky, landing down to the ground as a knight would move in chess. Wulgar, unable to move, prepares to dodge any incoming attacks. Ragnar, recognizing himself as the king, finds it suitable to protect the most valuable member of the team - and bolsters his own defenses with a shield of faith. Gazinoth, in the same situation as Wulgar, whispers an incantation to himself - the githyanki's figure becomes blurred as several, identical mirror images fill his tile. As if on cue, the marbled figures of the pawns slide forwards - heeding the mental, perhaps subconscious, commands of the party. The Bishop silently raises its arms to the sky - a miasmic, swirling mass of silvery-white energy pulls from the stars, radiating in a 15' radius around the Bishop. None of you seem hurt - in fact, the aura comforts you.

Avarice would have liked the pawn on G2 to move one step forward in order for him to reach H3 and the start attacking. Barring that Avarice would try to hide behind the pawn if possible. Stealth: 22
"Gazinoth, we should try to open a line in the middle from which you can bombard the enemy pieces with your magic. Everyone, the pieces most easy to get into position to start attacking should be the bishops and the queen. Keyleth you could move two squares diagonally to your left (to B3) and then start attacking for instance."
Avarice crouches behind the stationary pawn, granting him substantial cover against any possible attack - Gazinoth, in the meanwhile, ponders Avarice's suggestion, and ultimately replies; "While my magic primarily serves to augment the blade, I shall do as you suggest."
The two Knights on the opposing side leap into the starry sky and slam down in identical moves. Wordlessly, raises its sword to the sky - drawing the light of the stars around the marble blade, while the other lashes out thrice with a glaive against a Pawn nearby.
Black Knight 1: C6, Blinding Smite. Black Knight 2: F6, three Glaive attacks against White Pawn 5. Glaive Attack 1: 15 Damage: 7 Glaive Attack 2: 13 Damage: 11 Glaive Attack 3: 8 Damage: 9 The sound of a Glaive scraping across stone floor sounds as the Knight fails to scratch the Pawn's armor.
(Knight1 isn't targetable from B3 - Pawn6 would be your target, but either way, that'll be a miss.)
The next to act, Keyleth advances - and launches a bow diagonally across the field, sending an arrow deflecting harmlessly from the pawn's shield, the arrow sent flying into the infinite void of the sea.
The Queen's marble robes somehow seem to flow as the figure traces an incantation in the air - swirling sheets of ice wind around the queen's statue in a protective ward.
The King raises the pommel of its sword and sends it to the ground - an ominous clang rings through the empty vacuum, filling you with an ominous sense of dread.

Varan moves forth. The array of pawns on the opposing side follow suit - sliding forwards, hands gripping their marble blades. Only one reaches a position where it can attack an opposing pawn. Black Pawn 4 Longsword Attack (White Pawn 5): 18 Damage: 4

Thinking that bishop or knight doesn’t fit him so well, Wulgar walks toward the rook position, “If that suits you all.”
A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
"It's not as if I'm marrying the bastard," Keyleth deadpans.
