Triäsa drops the spell once she has an opportunity to check the room. She steps back out of the room while the others examine it and check on the welfare of the halfling. "It is fine Daventry. We will all enjoy you treating us later!" As everything here seems completed she wanders back out to the courtyard to wait for all the others to be ready to go.
As they gather by the main gate Ludolf approaches Daventry. "I am sorry if I was less than encouraging regarding the investigation of the murder sites. Even if we came up empty handed we still know there was nothing we missed, which is a good thing in itself moving forward." He says apologetically. "Also, we would likely not stand a chance in Baldurs gate without you, the rest of us being more scholarly types having no experience of navigating the streets an alleys of that wretched place. I am still available to study that tome of yours if you would let me help you."
As they get going he also tries his best to make pleasant conversation with the others.
"Pardot, I am thinking of acquiring a riding horse in Baldur's gate. I would very much appreciate if you would help me by interviewing the candidates. As an inexperienced rider I would need a mare with not so much temper I believe."
"Klin, I am sorry to hear you worry about your order. I'm sure they are fine, but I hope to soon be able to master dimensional magic to help you go and visit them. Until then, please ignore any less than polite comments on my part"
"Triäsa, I hope I didn't offend you yesterday. I was worried to see you leave us, twice. A lot has happened since we first met and although I know you are competent to look after yourself I can't help feeling protective of you. Please don't judge me for that. The concept of friendly relationships is a new thing to me, but I am an eager student and I hope you will find my company pleasant one day. Anyway, plese tell me if you are still interested in the tomes I mentioned and the extradimensional magic I have researched."
Fembris looks at the disarray and shakes her head. "I'll get him a healer but it does not look like we will make a lot of progress here. When he recovers I'll come back with a team and see if there is anything we can learn. I will also see what I can dig up from the Keep's investigation of the room and victims for when you get back."With that it sounds like you are all heading back to the gates and are ready to set off.
You all gather your supplies as the midmorning summer heat starts to beat down on you. As a group you walk out the gates of Candlekeep past the crowd of potential Seekers waiting for their submissions to be reviewed. For some of you it probably feels odd leaving behind the place you traveled so far to be at while others might be more grateful for a break and sometime outdoors, a temporary respite from the stone walls.
The first 3 days of your journey up the sword coast are unremarkable. You have plenty of time to talk and prepare. There is a fair amount of traffic on the road but nothing of note and most of the travelers keep to themselves suspicious of any strangers. At night you set a watch and the evenings pass uneventfully. You awaken early the fourth day and you can start to see the outline of Baulder's Gate far in the distance. At your current pace you think you will reach the city sometime around noon the next day.
(If there is anything you would want to do on the road I'll pause here for a bit otherwise I'll move you along a bit later. It will also give me a chance to respond to some of your DMs... sorry I am behind :) )

To Ludolf Pardot replies, “I’ll be happy to talk to the mares of the city. Perhaps I can find a pony and the two will be friendly.”
Before they head out, Pardot also ensures that Pocket has plenty of supplies to last her for a week or so. Though over their time together they’ve already found good mouse hunting grounds and a tree or two to relax nearby, so he isn’t worried about his furry companion much.
As they travel, Pardot is happy to help with food or supplies, though also offers everyone a goodberry every evening to ensure that everyone is taken care of. If not the most filling, it is juicy and nutritious. He also spends an hour or so each night patching up his old leather armor, adding studs here and there, and generally making it a bit stronger, if not much more fashionable.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Daventry's slightly sour mood fades as soon as you hit the Lion's Way, and the coastline comes back into view. She keeps a conversation going throughout the day, sharing stories of interesting things she'd seen on the seas, and strange folk she'd met in distant lands, and listening in return to any stories you share.
As you make camp the first night, she seems distracted, as if she's mulling over something. After the night's meal is done and the group is resting by the fire, she confesses, "So... I've been thinkin'. If there's ever a group that'll help me get to the bottom of what my brand and my book are, it's you all."Those with a higher natural insight can see that she seems uncharacteristically skittish about this, as if she's not extended this level of actual trust to anyone in a long time. As Triäsa was not present at the first telling, Daventry repeats what she spoke of before for her benefit (OOC: assume Triäsa knows the details of my posts #703 and #705).
Daventry lays out her bedroll almost like a picnic blanket and sits crosslegged. She sets the rectangular case from her pack in front of her. "One ground rule. No one else touches it... but I'll make sure you can all see it if you like." She takes off her necklace, and uses the small attached key to unlock the case. She rolls up her sleeves, and as she focuses, the brand on her arm showing the partial constellation of the Warrior Women begins to glow the same blue hue that the rest of her magic takes on. Her spectral hand lifts the tome from its container - a heavy tome, thick, bound in a dark leather material inscribed with the strange runes you'd seen previously from her traces.
"I've spent nearly a month trying to figure this out... some nights it's like staring at a wall. I can't make sense of the language, and nothing the Avowed brought has led me any closer... so I spend my nights trying to find patterns and connections in the book. If my first touch let me see and grasp the Weave, maybe finding more connections will help me understand magic further... or at least figure out the source."
As she sits, her mage hand opens the book to some of the first pages, keeping it aloft about two feet off the ground and easily readable for anyone who decides to spend some time sitting next to her on her blanket.
Ludolf tries his best to be a pleasant company to the others, listening attentively to the stories Daventry tells them. He seems rather spry this morning, having no trouble keeping up with the others. At the first evening he helps with the campfire best he can using magic to light it if necessary. He then tries to put his bedroll the same way Daventry does and again listens as she tells Triäsa her tale. As Daventry shows them the tome he can't contain his curiosity and moves over to sit beside her, very focused on the contents of the runes inside, using the strange powers of his enlightened mind to discern their meaning. "Let me see..." (Using the Eyes of the Rune Keeper Invocation)
From before they leave (or early on their trip)... Triäsa looks a little surprised at Ludolf's extended apology. She meets it with a smile as she allows him to speak without interruption. She mostly masks any immediate reactions to his words - if any.
"Thank you for that Ludolf. I certainly would like to see the tomes on extradimensional magic when I can. And I... don't believe you offended me yesterday." She sounds a bit uncertain here, as though trying to recall if maybe there was something. "As for being protective... well, I am starting to realize I am not particularly good at being cautious. So it is probably good I have others to help me. I am working on it though. "
She pauses at that point, giving Ludolf an appraising look. "Maybe we can talk more about our research on the road. I think I would like that."
As the group waits, she noticeably watches as Ludolf makes his rounds to talk to different members of their group.
Along the way... Triäsa, while happy to walk alone in silence now and then, spends much of the time in conversation with the others. She asks Klin more about his order, Pardot about his star studies, Daventry about sailing the ocean - she seems particularly interested in hearing about the ocean, and Ludolf about both his home and his studies. Even strangers that they pass she would greet.
She plays her lute to while away the time, more so when stopping, but at times while walking. Though she plays the instrument often, she doesn't sing any songs.
That first night, as Daventry shares with everyone about her tattoo and the tome, Triäsa listens with rapt attention. she starts to say, "I could perhaps..." just as Ludolf offers his help. She grows quiet to see what he might learn.

Ludolf you look at the pages and runes piecing the meaning from each in turn. You are able to read the first few pages before you start to feel very very ill. You feel the presence of evil infiltrating your mind and probing your very soul. You feel drawn into it as you are unable to look away from the pages. In your mind you see a swirl of indescribable horrors the likes you have never even imagined were possible. As your mind is about to break forever and leave you a quivering husk you are able to snap free though you are unsure if you will ever be the same. Until you are able reconnect with reality in some meaningful way you have disadvantage on wisdom based rolls (I will send you a DM about what you learned regarding the text)
Triäsa You feel a similar air and pull of evil against your mind but you sense it's perverse nature and before it can fully infiltrate your mind you are willful enough to look away and close yourself off to the presence.
As he concentrates to discern the meaning of the runes in Daventry's black tome Ludolf's eyes widen more and more, soon starting to express deep fear and utter madness. Salva me! It starts as a low muttering, steadily increasing until all can hear it. "That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die. That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die. That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die. That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die. That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die. That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die. That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die....
"Send that to the Abyss!" curses Triäsa in Elvish. She then looks with concern, and a touch of dread, at Daventry, reverting to Common. "You study that... that... THING!?" She points towards the book, but does not look at it.
It takes her a moment to realize the strange muttering coming from Ludolf. Placing her hands on his shoulders, she tries to turn him to face her. "Ludolf, what is wrong with you?" she says softly.
Ludolf continues his maddening chanting, seemingly not being able to break the black tome's hold on his now almost broken mind. "That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die. That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die. Daventry falls back in shock at Triasa's outburst. Her focus on the mage hand falters, and the book falls to the earth, slapping shut at it hits the ground.
"I... I don't understand. What do you mean?!"
She scrambles to get to the book, not taking her normal precaution with her spell work, and grabs ahold of it in her bare hands, holding it close to her chest as she reaches for the container. She attempts to shield her friends from the tome... Or perhaps shield the tome from her friends, she's not sure.
As soon as Daventry's black tome slams shut Ludolf's chanting stops. He is still gone though, catatonic, a mindless expression, a single tear finding it's way down his cheek, his grey eyes staring blankly in front of him. Salva me!
Triäsa drops the spell once she has an opportunity to check the room. She steps back out of the room while the others examine it and check on the welfare of the halfling. "It is fine Daventry.
