"No, let him run, Triäsa is right, we should not act as executioners." Brief pause. "Daventry, as much as your fears may come true, please find the compassion in your heart to spare his wretched soul. We don't know his fate, he may yet find redemption and atonement." Ludolf says calmly turned to Daventry now.
Daventry looks absolutely flabbergasted, and legitimately angry. "Are you kidding me? He's far more likely to come back with friends to complete his murderous intent! Or sneak up and give one of us a bite! This is not some gods-damned fairy tale you've read in a library somewhere, this is the real world, and it's cruel and unforgiving! That's why you band together with friends, and take care of threats to you and yours. Come off your Beshaba-damned high horse before the world takes you down when you least expect it."
She turns from the group. "The next time some poor farmer or an innocent kid ends up cursed as a wererat because you let that monster run, I hope you can still hold your head as high." Shouldering her shield from where she had to leave it, she stares icily at the others. "We should pack up and move. This site is no longer safe for us."
As Ludolf's gaze meets hers, Triäsa starts to speak, but quickly cuts off any comments she might have made as Daventry's anger becomes apparent.
As Daventry makes her comment about a poor farmer or innocent kid being cursed she responds. "That man is also cursed and likely was once one of those innocents. I get it, I know I might be naive. And maybe not as cautious as I ought. But your rough past does not somehow make you superior Daventry. It only makes you bitter and cruel." There is obviously a bit of animosity in her voice. "Have fun tracking down and murdering a poor cursed man."
She shifts her lute onto her back and picks up the crossbow she had dropped earlier, seeming to ignore the others for a moment. But looking back up and seeing Daventry ready to set off, she utters a harsh word in Elvish, "Extinguish" followed by a quick hand gesture. Her Prestidigitation spell causes Daventry's torch to go out.
Daventry, frustrated, throws the torch into the forest. "Fine. Do you remember the part where he shot at you, and me? Tried to murder you on your watch and us in our sleep? If he was just a poor cursed man, wouldn't he seek out a temple or hospice where he could get help, instead of taking to the woods with a crossbow and training a pack of killer rats? If trying to keep my friends alive and breathing when someone tries to slaughter them is bitter and cruel, then I don't know what it is you want, Triäsa."
Triäsa turns to Daventry. "I just want you to pause a moment and at least try compassion." She pointedly turns to Ludolf, pointing at him. "Even HE said to try to find some compassion. I would think you would at least consider what he has to say." She then looks a bit more intently at Daventry, taking a few steps towards her. "Maybe, just maybe, if every single person was not trying to hunt him down and exterminate him that man could find some other way to live."
Daventry exhales loudly, attempting to calm her own heated emotions, and waves back Klin from where he's about to run off in pursuit. "I suppose we're just going to let whatever happens, happen, Klin." She sniffs, then sits on the ground, leaning against the log next to where she'd laid her bedroll originally. "You win, Triäsa. I'll just be over here stewing in compassionless evil, as is my nature."You see her wipe her cheek, before she puts her head down in her hands, her hair covering her face.
Ludolf takes a step closer to Daventry, sighing, but still smiling, in spite of the anger around him. "Daventry, he is cursed and it is unlikely he freely subjected himself to this curse. Do you think someone freely would choose to live a wretched life like his. You saw the man, he was barely surviving, likely condemned to this way of life by a world not tolerating what is different. We should not act as executioners to a helpless man who has not had a fair and just trial." Ludolf says calmly and pauses briefly. "We are all unbalanced by this attack, perhaps we should continue this discussion tomorrow." He suggests, looking pleadingly to Daventry and Triäsa for a truce.
Daventry looks up at Ludolf from her log, her eyes more ruddy than normal. "Doesn't matter, in the end. I can't do anything about a were on my own, and if you won't help me, then that's the end of it."
She shifts her pack around so that the bag is resting in front of her, and wraps her arms around it, holding something within the pack tightly.
Anyone with a high insight can tell that there is a feeling of helplessness that is probably fueling her anger at the situation - the way the fight went poorly for her, the fact that she couldn't scratch the wererat if she tried, and having her friends seemingly turn against what she thought was the best course of action. Over the course of a few moments, that helplessness shifts to a look of determination.
"But we will help you Daventry, all of us."Ludolf says and looks to the others for support. "We will help you fight off your curse, the curse of that tome you find so precious." Ludolf says sincerely and compassionately, trying to find her eyes with his. "We are here for you Daventry, you are a good person, but you must not fight the battle against this thing on your own." He says smiling warmly to the shield maiden.
Daventry does not seem receptive to Ludolf's comments regarding the tome. "If there is a way for me to learn and control this magic, to be strong enough to protect those I care about, how could I refuse? I have to find answers, Ludolf. I can't go back to the way things were, a life spent waiting to catch a buccaneer's blade, or to be sold to some seedy brothel, or to be bred by some muck farmer." That last one, she really sneers at.
"You're right. We should table these talks for later."
Daventry looks around, realizing Klin might have continued into the forest despite her acquiescence.
"I used to think like you Daventry, and then I met you, and Klin, and Pardot, and Triäsa, and I realized you all are the answer I sought. You wouldn't need a life like that Daventry, you would have a life with us, as a brave and good-hearted adventurer" Ludolf says, now laying a comforting hand on Daventry's shoulder. After a while he takes a step back again looking to the others. "You can all go back to rest now. I will keep watch until Klin comes back."
@Klin You follow the rat into shrubbery looking for signs of where it may have passed. You are pretty confident it continued off further into the woods. You probably are not too much further behind it.
5
Klin roll either perception or investigation if successful you will catch up to the rat.
The rest of you -- when the wererat transformed he dropped all of his clothing and belongings. You find a hand crossbow with 10 bolts, 15 gold pieces and some stale bread.
You follow tracks rather easily as there seems to be small amounts of blood that lead you to it. With your speed you actually manage to out pace the little critter that you have now descended upon. It stares up at you menacingly or perhaps it is pleading for it's life. Either way you have just a moment before it darts down a hole, deep into the earth. As I see it you have three options.
1. Reach out and grab it. Be warned, the wererat will try to bite you in response. (str or dex roll to grab it)
2. Try and smash it with your book (make an attack roll)
3. Let it go.
Of course if you have another plan I am all ears. Choice is yours.

To Klin, she nods. "We should at least try to track him. He's hurt, so maybe he'll be leaving a trail." She lights a torch and gathers her things.
