Hello! I am fairly new to this forum but not new to PbP. I am looking to start a fun, homebrew campaign with 5-6 players starting at level 3. If you're interested in joining, post about your character or link your dndbeyond character sheet. :)
The grand city of Dragonthorn, located in the high northern territory of Cavos’ka, was carved into the snowy mountainside of Mount Elderick four hundred years ago. South of the immaculate stone gates are forests, thick and magical, that curve almost whimsically around the snow-covered mountain range for as far as the eye could see. To the north of the city, the mountains cut a harsh path through the frozen landscape. Beyond the endless mountains lay the Steaming Sea, a twenty mile stretch of ocean heated by geothermal vents, which keeps it from freezing during the harsh winter months. Along the coast, veins of bountiful diamond mines make the city rich, for Dragonthorn serves as the only safe access to the Steaming Sea.
Three years ago, the city suddenly became beset by refugees, who upon interview, pleaded for safety from ‘the army that comes at night’. The refugees claimed that their farms, towns, and villages were being razed by horrendous armies that, to quote, “came swiftly at night, without warning nor sound.” While first alarmed by these claims, the citizens of Dragonthorn quickly became skeptical, for surely if an invading army was driving people north, the southern kings would beg for aid. This skepticism is further fueled by official letters from every southern king, declaring that there be no war in their kingdoms. They attributed the fanciful tales of the peasants to a simple fever that ravaged the populace a year prior, leaving those who survived the affliction weak of mind and prone to hysterics. Thus, the citizens of Dragonthorn ignore the warnings of the refugees, treating them as a nuisance and subjecting them to the poorest parts of the city.
Dragonthorn is ruled by an aging king of seventy-five, who upon his death, will leave no heir. As word of the king’s failing health reaches every corner of the land, a treacherous plot begins with disastrous consequences should it come to pass...

Backstory: While Rafan Ness was an infant, a mysterious creature invaded his home, killing all of his family members except for Rafan. He was adopted by the prestigious Murdrei family, and although he had a new family, the memory of the Demon attack haunted him for years. On his 14th birthday, Rafan ran away from his new home, seeking answers about what killed his original family. He found a book on demonology in a secret compartment at his family’s old abandoned home, authored by Rafans father. He studied the book over and over, learning more and more of the concepts of Demonlogy. Over time, his studies of demonology spilled over into the study of magic, and he converted his father's tome of demonology into his spellbook.

Backstory: Kai was born in a small village near the mountains, which had existed in seclusion as a refuge for its small community of Half-Elves. Visitors were rare in the mountains, except for Druids, Rangers and an occasional Dwarf. This was due less to the remoteness of the village, and more to the secret buried deep below the village, and the pack its inhabitants had made long ago with a celestial being to protect and hide the infernal remnants. Over the centuries and generations, adventurers have journeyed forth to hunt for more of the infernal bones which lay scattered throughout the land.

Name: Zach White
Class: Paladin (Conquest)
Race: Aasimar
Backstory: Zach, like most Aasimar, has natural inclinations to the divine and visions (might multiclass into divine soul sorcerer if the campaign progresses high enough,) but a shadow (fallen Aasimar) has darkened his soul since his best friend while growing up was killed in an accident. He has taken an Oath of Conquest to try and right the wrongs of the World but knows he can only do so much. He feels deeply and is intensely loyal. He is strong and charismatic and leads whenever the opportunity arises. He is skilled with the sword and has learned to ride well. His family, which was middle class and loving, has benefitted from his accomplishments and looks to Zach as a mentor and future patriarch. The problem is he struggles to remove the shadow that hangs on his soul from the scars of his youth. He feels responsible for the accident that killed his friend because it happened on a youthful adventure that he instigated. Only time will tell.
Backstory the result of a scandalous marriage between an elven noble and her human lover, Amakiir was sent away in disgrace from the elven kingdom of his birth. he grew up in an orphanage, after both of his parents disappeared under mysterious circumstances. now this wasn't a bad orphanage mind you, but Amakiir was still unhappy. Through his time in the orphanage he discovered his love of music, and when he was old enough he saved up money doing odd jobs around the orphanage's town until he could buy a flute, nothing fancy, but it did the job. One of the orphanage's staff helped him learn his instrument. When he was 19, Amakiir left his home and began travelling, playing music for people wherever he was to scrape by.

Character Name: Vorn Coborel
Class: Ranger (Gloom Stalker)
Race: Dark Elf (Drow)
Backstory: Vorn was dragged into the seedy underworld at a young age where his talents as a spotter were quickly noticed, rarely a job went by with his gang without Vorn being the ever watchful eye hiding in the shadows above. For a long time this was his position within the gang and he was happy, of sorts, until he was put onto some of the more high profile jobs, where the real money was made. No longer were they stealing from the wealthy in the underworld but now he was watching over beatings and murders and he could not stand it. Thinking he had curried enough favour with the boss he pleaded to be let go so he could live a better life. This only lead to a mark being out on his head and suddenly he was being hunted by the very people he used to watch over. For years he evading the attempts on his life, until he took the drastic measure of coming to the surface, hiding with the refugees he entered Dragonthorn.
Backstory: Sven has been studying the runes all of his adult life, living on his own away from civilization. The quietness had allowed him to focus on his craft and turn it into art. The runes speak to him, and he carves them into a material item to infuse it with their power. He's aware there's still a long way before him till he can be considered a true master, though.
A long way which will have to wait.
Strangers have begun to invade his lands. They're fleeing from a quiet army, they say. Trying to run away from a silent death, to avoid a certain extinction. This cannot be tolerated. Sven has to find out what happened and end the threat. Whoever or whatever is doing this, it's causing all kinds of distraction, and will in any case end up reaching him anyways. Sven will join the refugees in their way to Dragonthorn and convince the King to do something about it. It's time someone showed some initiative here!
Backstory: (Soldier Background) Growing up in the south, Ver joined the kings army at a young age and has been loyal ever since, yet never directly speaking or contacting the king, as a subordinate should. He wishes to be able to speak to the king before his illness takes him, but is not bold enough to approach him or any of his guards/servants. Just recently he has begun to see scales appear on his skin, which at first he tried to hide, but his figure, contrary to most dwarves, is slight and wiry, although still small. It is difficult to hide the scales that bulge off of his skin, so he embraces them, seeing it as a part of his ancestry. His great great grandparents served a gold dragon and were gifted magically for it. The gift must be emerging now that there is an impending threat of some sort. It is his time to make a name for his family as he promised his parents he would before they passed. He is kind of shy despite his strength and newfound magic.
Myrddin is the son of a blacksmith and a jewler. His parents wished that he would follow their foot steps and become a craftsman. Alas, magic is what caught his eye. He picked up a little from a traveling wizard and now he is hooked. However, the tuition costs for a proper education in magic are enormous. His parents, unable to cover the costs, suggested that he try out adventuring. That way he could not only save up for his education,. but he will gain some practical application of his desired profession at the same time.

Race: Air Genasi

Backstory: Durant was a soldier of fortune. His company was seeking shelter from a storm and found a cave. Inside, was a shrine and tomb of elaborate design, decorated with gold, and jewels. The company decided grave robbing was harmless enough and opened the tomb. When the mummy awoke, it laid waste to all of them, except Durant who swore eternal servitude as he begged for his life. The mummy marked him, and set him on his way, seeking some treasure Durant knew little about.
