T'laren takes a moment to gather himself (second wind 6, before joining the others to make sure that the others are alright, and is alarmed to find out that Cassius is at the bottom of the gorge.
((How far is it to the bottom? 20 ft? Would there be enough hand/footholds to try to quickly get down there without jumping?))

Droknin will go to the bottom of the crevasse to try to bring Cassius back up. Since he has been there before, he is slightly more familiar with the terrain.

Droknin helps T'laren with Cassius. When they get back up, they can see that Droknin is a little bloodied, and not a spring cub any longer. He gives a low grunt and he helps lay Cassius on the floor. "Now, that was fun!!" He leaves the medical care to more capable folks, and he holds Mlinzi with both paws and scans for further trouble.

Cassius' breathing is stable, if labored, though he remains unconscious. It looks as though he may have a severely separated shoulder.
For now, the basement and caverns are silent. Eerily silent. Other than your shuffling feet, the only sound is the slow breathing of Cassius... and of one other. The small goblin the bugbears threw at you earlier is also lying, unconscious, in the hall.

T'laren eyes it with a certain amount of distaste. "It seemed to be getting treated poorly by the big ones, maybe it'll be free with information when it wakes... but that *thing* was impersonating the Townmaster, then Sildar. I'm sorry I was so easily duped into thinking it was really Sildar... we handed the real Townmaster right over to him. It's a possibility that the real Sildar and Townmaster are both dead now. When it showed up in the tunnel behind me, I thought perhaps it was the wizard who'd been appearing as the Townmaster all along, and was using magic to look like Sildar now... but this means the wizard is still in here somewhere. With Cassius down, do we dare continue on after the wizard? Can any bring him back up?", the elf muses in probably the longest speech you've heard from him thus far.

Keashirryl kneels down next to Cassius, refusing to look up at the others when she manages to say a couple words. "I am sorry, too. I should have known. A shapeshifter was running loose, and I didn't even think of checking before giving up the potion."
She purses her lips together, and makes a grimace when she realises that she got out of the scuffle unscathed. Shutting her eyes tight, she holds a hand over their unconscious companion.
"I can," she answers quietly to T'laren "Yes, but this is the last thing I can do today."
She quickly presses her hand down hard before she could change her mind, casting her last cure wounds. As the dim light of the spell flashes out, she looks up at the bloodied Droknin and the similarly wounded elf, and mutters sorry one more time before getting up.
With Keashirryl's healing, Cassius awakens and sits up, massaging his shoulder. He looks down into the pit at the dead bugbear, then to the rest of you, and nods.
The little goblin remains unconscious for now. At the moment there is no sign of any other threats in the crevasse room. Three dead bugbears and a dead... shapeshifting thing... lie on the floor.

T'laren, you inspect the body of the mysterious creature. It is definitely the same entity that you encountered at the townmaster's home, pretending to be Sildar. It has the same ragged wound in its side and is wearing the same clothes. It has a longsword and scabbard that resemble those you saw used by the real Sildar yesterday, but it is not wearing his armor. The only other item on its person is a small cloth satchel attached to its belt. Inside are 22gp and 3 gemstones worth 10gp each.
Garrin, it takes only a brief examination of the creature to confirm your suspicions. This was none other than a doppelganger. Rare humanoids of mysterious origin, they are capable of assuming the form of others at will. In addition to their shapeshifting skills, they are quick and deadly in combat. Luckily, the wounds it took in its earlier battle with Sildar must have softened it up for you.

T'laren takes the pouch and longsword for now, concerned that if it had Sildar's weapon, that the fellow might not be alive.
"We're not in good shape to push on, but I don't like the idea of leaving the wizard time to escape or fortify further. On the plus side, I doubt he's got many people left. If we return to town, we can check on the Townmaster, if he lives, and perhaps fine evidence of Sildar's flight, if he indeed got away after the fight with this beast."

But we also need to deal with our small acquaintance here" she answers, nodding towards the unconscious goblin, casting spare the dying just in case. "We could probably carry him to the surface, if that is our decision. And let's not forget about that aberration that lurks nearby. "
