Nikita - "Thank you, Nikita,"Nancy says, "I'm not making it up. When I think about their faces all I see is nothingness. Like I am drawing a blank, so to speak."
"Hiram?" Nancy smiles, it is plain to see her fondness for him, "Why I should imagine he's working. He helps out with the running of the Carnival - Isolde or Hermos would likely know where he is currently. It was a dreadful time for him," she says earnestly,"I didn't mind joining the Carnival as a means to lie-low, but I think Hiram took it hard."
"Thank you Nancy. You are a brave woman. I promise you we will do what we can to find the cause of all this." And I wish you good health, though I know that if you have those things growing in your belly, that is a futile hope and I can't bring myself to say it.
Nikita bows slightly to Nancy in appreciation, making a mental note to follow up with Isolde or Hermos about Hiram later.
To Faila about the aberrant eggs inside Harold, Nikita would say "My only instinct is to destroy them to prevent them from infecting anyone else. Do you think we can learn anything more from them?"
Nikita is deferring to Faila here as she already views the latter young woman as clearly more knowledgeable on these matters. Time permitting, Nikita casts Detect Magic as a ritual in the tent to see if she notices any magic coming from the eggs inside Harold's stomach, or from anywhere else (including the general direction of Nancy's stomach). He will also ask Nick Nack and Boyd their opinions, though she's fairly certain the grizzled man at least will simply want the eggs destroyed just as she does. She also tells the other party members present what she has heard from Nancy.
When there is nothing left to do, Nikita will eventually exit and head into town with Nick Nack.
"Come and see them," Faila says to Nikita, her expression worried. If Nikita comes with her, she will show her the small leathery pods and their contents. "I have never seen anything like them. I think we should destroy them, but... I don't know what they are, or what they would turn into, or what will destroy them. I... I am worried that the others with this illness might have them too. Or, do they only grow in a corpse? I did not see them at first, while Harold still lived." She waits patiently for Nikita's ritual, hoping that will give them some more information.
As she is working on the ritual, Nikita will look for any containers or basins of water. If at any moment she senses (or Faila indicates) that things (creatures, spores) seem to be breaking free from the eggs, she would drop the ritual and instead cast Shape Water to pull water from the container encase the eggs and anything emanating from them in a block of ice to confine them.
Once done (hopefully) with the ritual, Nikita would do whichever of the above skill checks apply. If she and Faila still have no clue what to do, she would try to use the Shape Water approach to detach the eggs, fully encased in a block of ice, and take them outside for Nick to potentially Eldritch Blast them into oblivion the moment Nikita releases the block of ice, having seen the quirky gnome use that cantrip repeatedly.
OOC: Not sure any of the above is possible but putting as much out there in case it applies and I don't have a chance to post in the morning (being in the Pacific time zone).
Boyd frown deeply after hearing about the eggs. "Shit." He says, frowning deeply. "Mother always warned me not to eat carnival food. Didn't tell me why." Boyd confirms Nikita's suspicions about the man, "Aye, blast the little blighters if you can't... you know... study them."
He has also reentered the tent at Nate's request and waits with Nancy and she babbles like a brook. "Where's your tent, Nance?" he asks her finally. He turns to his companions (Faila and Nikita are the only ones here, right?) and says, "maybe there're still tracks."
On a hunch he asks, "Oi, Nance. You eat anything funny before you started feeling out of odds? Anyone else gone missing 'round here? Even just for a while? Maybe old, erm, Harold?"
Once Nathaniel returns he'll consider his good deed done and he'll join up with the group planning to go into town, though he intends to search the site outside of Nancy's tent later.
"If I were you, I'd do some kind of deal with Toska"- Ermasnietsz continues to speak gradually as if she's been discussing theories of conspiracy, when she puts the fixed mirror on the table.
"I'd promise to buy her a potion that lets her gain additional height. In return, she should reveal the source of the tonics. Quid pro quo. What do you say?"
The sorcerer refrains from making further attempt to extract more information. But she decides to return here when she's gathered more information about the other spell-caster.
Does Ermasnietsz see some sort of spell-scrolls or books along with the mundane items?
After 10 minutes your detect magic ritual casts. You feel magic emanating from the dark shapes below Harold's corpses skin; they are clearly magical creatures. The type of magic you sense is necrotic - it appears to be feeding off the life force of those it infests.
It is clear to you that these creatures are not native to the area/region. In fact, to your knowledge, they are unlikely to be native to Oerth. If you were to hazard a guess they could well be from an entirely different plane of existence; possibly even existing in multiple planes at once.
Arcana
The creatures appear to be magical in nature though, to your knowledge, they do not appear demonic in nature. Your mind whirls with the possibilities; if certain magic creatures and familiars were summoned from alternate planes of existence, could this creature have somehow been drawn magically from an entirely different plane? Such things seem more fictional than based in reality, surely?
Investigation
Other than the egg sacs Faila pointed out you do not notice anything.
Additional Nature
((Based on your high roll))
If you had to guess these eggs look like they are likely to hatch shortly (within the next 30-60 minutes).
You are able to find a container full of water. Using the shape water spell you draw out the water from the container, surround the egg sacs, and freeze the water. You seem to have contained the creatures but they no longer move.
Boyd - Nancy looks concerned. "Is everythin' alright?" she asks cautiously, "My tent on the outer ring of Carnival tents, near the road into town. You can see the top of Hoolwatch Tower from its entrance."
She becomes excited once you mention the possibility of tracks, "I didn't think to look for the tracks! Can't be makin' thin's up if there're tracks now, can I?"
"Have I eaten anything funny? Don't think so. Quite a lot of the food is from Saltmarsh though, we only carry the essentials otherwise. A couple of Carnival folk caught some fish from the local river to the North of camp - the Kingfisher River. Don't suppose it could be that, d'ya?" Nancy questions.
Ermasnietsz - "Ain't no chance I'm leavin' this wagon," Claude declares stubbornly, "No way I can show my face out there."
As your eyes scan around the dimly lit wagon you spy a number of scrolls and books that could well be related to spells, Claude does not keep these hidden from view.
Boyd shrugs at Nancy, "Maybe. But get some rest, dear. We'll look into it." He leaves the young woman in the care of the ex-priest and joins the group heading into town.
“Am i talking to myself? Maybe I’m talking to you!” Nick says to his mage hand now visible and following him like a Disney glove, “if someone wants to come to town let’s do it!”
nick starts walking toward the exit of the carnival unless someone stops him, proceeding toward the town of Saltmarsh proper to procure equipment and other items of interest, on the look out for the dashing Mr. Dolan.
Nikita relays to Faila the results of her Nature and Arcana checks on the eggs, as well as the necrotic magic from the eggs that she sensed with Detect Magic. These are not from our world. But then again, neither are several of my new companions, possibly including Faila.
To Faila: "Unless you have a better idea, I am going to take this..." (gesturing with disgust to the eggs trapped in the ice) "... out to our gnome friend to destroy with his blasting magic."
Nikita takes her leave of Nathaniel. Unless Faila objects, she uses Mage Hand to bring the block of ice containing the eggs with her, if it's not too heavy. Once outside, she calls out to the departing Nick Nack: "Hold one moment, Nick Nack. Can you help me with this?".
She would, with some disquiet, describe to Nick Nack and Boyd the results of her Nature and Arcana checks on the eggs, and the necrotic activity she sensed from the eggs using Detect Magic. "I don't want to be anywhere near these things", she would confide in Boyd.
She explains her rudimentary plan to have the gnome destroy the eggs with Eldritch Blast as she sets down the ice block. Nikita would use Shape Water again (just at that moment) to create a hole on one side for the blasts to get to the eggs, ready with Shape Water again to close up the hole in case it doesn't work.
If all that goes well, Nikita is finally ready to go to town with Nick Nack and Boyd. She asks Faila if she would like to come with them.
Faila nods, eyes wide, and follows Nikita out as the elf carries the ice block. "I... I think destroying it is a good idea, if it's possible." She seems shaken by the revelation that these things are extraplanar, and that perhaps their arrival correlated somehow with her own and that of her companions. Wrapping the patchwork cloak tighter around her as they go back out into the cold, she crouches down to look through the ice at the eggs and their contents. She hopes that Nick's fireworks will be effective.
Ermasnietsz frowns at the outburst of the caster. But a smile of recognition appears to conceal the previous expression. In fact, she has found a lot of characteristics of Claude that are peculiarly similar to her own personal features. Both of them put emphasis on their own comfort rather than thinking about the deadly disease that's been terrorizing the area.
"You don't have to, Claude. We will help you since you're the one who summoned us here. And you're the only person who can send me back."
Nick isn’t sure what they are asking him to deal with, having not been in the tent from which the ice block is being carried out of.
being asked to shoot it, he jumps into action… “ok put it on the ground and stand back.”
Nick uses his telekinesis to hold the container far away in an empty field nearby (30-40ft from anyone else) and prepares to shoot (unless someone tells ‘stop’!)
Nikita nods to Nick. She stands 30' away to the side (the range of Shape Water) and counts down so that she creates a cylindrical hole in the ice with the cantrip just before the gnome fires his Eldritch Blast so that it can get through to the eggs.
"Don't stop until they are obliterated, Nick. They are not of this world and I am frightened of them. I hope this works."
Nikita herself prepares to either seal the hole back up with Shape Water if it doesn't work, and/or attack herself at range with her longbow.
Ermasnietsz - Claude coughs awkwardly. "About that..." he says uncertainly, "I did kinda bring y'here, tha' is true."
Meresaa calmly waves her hand to interrupt. "If I may. Do you mean to inform us that you are unable to repeat the spell, to return us to our homelands?"
Claude looks down dejected. "Well, I could give it a good go. As y'can tell by me mishap everythin' didn't entirely go ta plan. Somethin' 'appened... when I casted the spell." He hunches towards you and lowers his voice, "Somethin' amplified it. A' least, tha's what I reckon. The spell's range is only finite, y'understand? But..." He sighs deeply, "It wen' beyond. Beyond the limi'ations of this world."
Claude's appendage, which he had aptly named Maud, at this point opens its eyes and looks at you. "It weren't my spell alone tha' brought y'here an' which bound Maud t'me. Dunno, wha' caused it, maybe some magical 'nomilie or enviro'mental int'er'ference," Claude says, clearly confused by the whole situation.
Medical Tent Group - You watch as the crackling energy beams of Nick's Eldritch Blast go streaking out and make contact with the ice, obliterating the creatures encased inside. You wait for a few minutes, on edge for what may happen next; will there be a response to your actions? have the creatures truly perished?
After a while, you get the sense that it may be safe to approach the area where the container was destroyed. A powerful acrid stench is in the air, it smells like spiced vomit. You see what remains of the creature then it resembles a cross between a lamprey and a cactus, dark-purple in colour, and covered with a thick slime that gives it an iridescent purple sheen. Sharp barbs cover its body.
As you get closer the creature briefly shimmers before melting into a purplish-grey pool of liquid.
“can’t believe that actually worked guys! So now can 1 of you, or may be all of you!, can come to town with me? I really need some armor a shield and some equipment for exploration like caltrops and a bullseyes lantern. This isn’t gonna be as easy as we thin, and it’s best to be prepared!”
