Joren hears Samir with a grunt of assent and tries his best, with limited success, not to speculate about anything any more, given the possible consequences. Nevertheless, stray thoughts enter his head unbidden, like Mal's way of speaking in people's minds as he had with Ash.
Several generations of half-elves?? I was guessing that Malachi's parents may both be half-elven, but even then, was thinking most half-elves are not like that. Most are having one elven parent and one human, just as I am not having two half-dwarven parents but rather one dwarven parent and one human. Exceptions may always be happening of course with two half-elven parents, but several generations of half-elves, interbreeding only with other half-elves? Somehow, it is seeming contrived, being that half-elves, though more common than half-dwarves, are rarer than either humans and elves....
Mentally cursing his inability to control this idle train of the very speculation he was striving to avoid, Joren too stares at the portraits, checking to see if there is anyone who is not a half-elf. Wondering if the house is just showing the party what they might be expecting to see.
Also, wasn't there... Oh, the loud argument.Joren tries to determine if the sounds are still ongoing, and whether they are coming from any particular door.
Ashley charges forward, looking for the sound of the loud argument. If she can't tell which way it came from or if it had died down, she'll head straight for the first door and attempt to wrench in open.
Ashley hears Malachi in her head again. I don’t know, I’m in an office, I think. Be careful, I sense another presence here. It surrounds the place, and it’s full of hate.
As everyone approaches the corner where the hall meets the sitting room, the voices become clearer for a moment. It sounds like a man and a woman is a loud but whispered fight. "No, we are NOT getting a doctor involved. We just need some time away while things blow over""Oh, and when will THAT be? It's been three months already. Debtors are circling, and the funds are not coming in. And I know you say not to worry about the missing children, but he-""Wait, listen. I hear him coming down the hall." It sounds like they should be just around the corner, but when the party gets there, the voices go silent and the sitting room is empty.
Frustrated, Ashley returns to the hall and reaches for the first door, just as it opens in her face, with Malachi standing on the other side. Behind him is what appears to a small, richly furnished study.
Malachi jumps, startled as the door opens, then a mixture of happiness and relief washes across his face as he recognizes Ashley.
He quickly grabs her in a hug “Ashley! Everyone is here? Thank the gods, I was worried that I had lost you. I feel like I can't trust my senses.” He looks around at the others. “We need to get out of this place, something is not right. I feel another presence here, and it is full of hate.” Malachi looks cautiously around the hallway as he says this.
Vilus wonders if it truly is Mal and connects with the man mentally. Telepathically he communicates, "that really you mate? We can't be sure in this place"
Echo still ahead of him, Joren steps forward behind Ashley and Vilus so he can see Malachi standing in the doorway. wants to believe that it is really his friend. He begins to ask Mal a question as he had with Samir that only his friends would know the answer to. And yet... if this hateful presence is tied up with his friend's mind magic, would it not also know everything that Mal knows? Nothing is making sense...Joren shakes his head, trying to clear it.
He finds himself mumbling. "What did it do, Mal? What did it do with the vanishing children? Can we still be saving them or laying their spirits to rest?"
Ashley hugs her friend back tightly. They were all back together, even if it was in this awful place, she felt better. Hearing Joren, she nods, "Yeah, did you just hear those voices? Something about missing children? I wonder if more is going on in this town than the people let on, this is a bad place, that's for sure."
She looks further down to the other closed doors and the open sitting room where she heard the voices. She continues down, opening each door as she goes. She isn't sure what she is looking for, mainly not wanting to have something sneak up behind them.
