OOC: Giving another day for Briny and Uragum to take their actions before botting and resolving. Briny will regain consciousness here with 3 hit points.
Uragum watches as the dragon soars off. With the thick muck of the swamp there was no catching up. Turning toward Ellison, Uragum closed some of the distance and then brought up his hands, Lightning cackling between them.
"You've got to make your choice soon. Die now, alone in the swamp or cooperate and see your next sunrise." Uragum says and then releases his spell.
Move: assuming 20 ft movement gets 10 feet closer through difficult terrain.

Briny blinks at the sky, somebody is yelling nearby. Suddenly she sits up and groans at the pain, but she has to get get up. She has to! She stumbles closer to Ellison and looks around for anything that might have the books, or papers, or- where's the dragon? "Did he take them? Does the dragon have the books?" Letting out a frustrated yell she will also let out a bolt of chaotic magic if Rythnax looks like he is still within 120 feet.
(If applicable, Attack 18 for potentially 8 Damage, type tbd)
Ellison is able to avoid Hex's arrow, but there is no escaping the lightning that surges from Uragum's fingertips. The energy courses into the thief, throwing him away from Sylyra and into the entrance to the small cave, where he rolls to a stop, dead.
Briny searches the treeline for the departed Rythnax as she stands among the swamp, but the dragon wyrmling is no longer in sight. Searching for any sign of books or papers, she notes a book-shaped object wrapped in cloth sitting on the island near Ellison's original sitting place.
Area Description:
A large mound rises from the swamp here with a gaping, black hole in the side. In front of the hole, a small campfire dances in the gloom.
OOC: Each character has earned 162 XP for defeating Ellison and Rythnax. Removed 2 arrows from Hex's inventory (looks like Hex actually only had 1 left at the beginning of the fight, so makes sense that last longbow shot would have been a nat 1 lol).
Uragum stops the flow of Magic on the now corpse of Ellison lest he burn it and his belongings to a char. He slogs his way over to the island and looks to the others. "We in one piece yet? Ya? Did I tell ya how much I'm staring to hate dragons. Good gods. Going to have to look into something to knock flying things back down to earth," he says.
He moves up a bit towards the mound. He lights a torch from the fire and uses to get better light. Best to be sure no more dangers assault them as they recover.
Sylyra steps back as Ellison is thrown by Uragum's witchbolt. The elf watches the man rolls to a dead stop. Straightening up, he ends the shillelagh spell, and the phantom flames die away from his staff.
Briny: "Did he take them? Does the dragon have the books?"
Uragum: "We in one piece yet? Ya? Did I tell ya how much I'm staring to hate dragons. Good gods. Going to have to look into something to knock flying things back down to earth."
Sylyra pulls the hood of his cloak up over his white-blonde hair to cast his face in shadow.
DM, are there birds?
If there is a bird close enough for Sylyra to speak to it:
Reaching into his pack, Sylyra extracts a ration. Using his speech of the woods trait, he approaches the bird, saying (and casting animal friendship), "Hello, friend. That was a scary dragon, wasn't it?" Small notes of light drift down from the mistletoe attached to the end of his staff. He pinches off a corner of the ration and crumbles it into his empty palm, which he holds out toward the bird. "We need to know where the dragon has gone. Can you follow it for me? Don't get close. I don't want you to get hurt like we did. But if you can follow it and then come back and let me know where it has gone, he can get back what it stole from us."
If Sylyra sees nor hears any birds close enough for him to speak to:
Silently, he moves over to Ellison and begins checking his pockets.
(Oh man, I really need to remember to check my ammo more often haha)
Hex sighs in disappointment as Ellison is killed by Uragum's lightning. "What a waste. To throw his life away for a stupid cause that didn't even care about him in the first place..."
She slowly limps towards the island to search his body and inside the mound. As she does she looks towards Briny with a sympathetic smile. "Are you alright? That dragon packed a bigger punch than I expected. I really need to stop underestimating our enemies." She looks down and rubs the back of her head in an attempt to hide her embarassment, laughing as she recalls how useless she was in the battle.
Briny ignores the weird bird calls coming from too close, she doesn't answer Hex either. She wipes her hands on her wet clothes but doesn't check to see how clean that got them as she limps to the book-shaped package and dumps out whatever is in the wrapping. If they are indeed books she will quickly flip through a few pages, spending maybe 12 seconds looking for any words like pool, radiance, or other words that might be familiar to her about the same subject. Then, whether she finds them or not she will close the books and start stuffing them into her pack.
"We should leave. We should go now, maybe even get different rooms at another inn. Because of, uh, the cult. And... the dragon might not attack us in public." The pauses could be caused by the pain, she looks like she is still in quite a lot of that. Finally taking a look at the others she sees that everyone is wounded and adds "We could all use a day before anything else happens."
After Sylyra speaks to a bird spotted among the topmost boughs of a knotted tree growing within the marsh, the creature happily flies off in the same direction as Rythnax. While Ellison seems to have had nothing in the way of possessions, Briny unwraps the blood-stained shirt to find a carefully wrapped book: Lords and Lineages of Phlan. The content of the book is rather dry as she flips through, detailing various noble households of Phlan and family trees throughout the centuries.
Inside the small cave within the mound is a different story. Hex steps in to find a small collection of coins and other items. A total of 300 gold pieces are nestled among the rotting vegetation and bones lining the floor, as well as a suit of splint armor, a magnifying glass, and a spell scroll that Hex is unable to decipher.
OOC: Added 75 gp to each character's inventory. Let me know if anybody is claiming the other discoveries.
After the bird flies away, Sylyra turns back toward the body of Ellison and the cave. "I have sent a spy to follow the wyrmling," he says as he walks toward Briny and Hex.
"We should leave," Briny replies. "We should go now, maybe even get different rooms at another inn. Because of, uh, the cult. And... the dragon might not attack us in public." The pauses could be caused by the pain, she looks like she is still in quite a lot of that. Finally taking a look at the others she sees that everyone is wounded and adds "We could all use a day before anything else happens."
"I agree that we need to rest, but if we want all of the books," he says to Briny, motioning toward the single book in the young woman's hands, "we can't let it get away. We'll camp here and set off as soon as possible. The bird will look for me here. See to the fire." Having settled that, he turns to look at Hex. "What have you found?"
Hex whistles happily as she finds the gold, quickly spliting it up to equally distribute it to the party. She looks up at Sylyra with a grin. "A sizeable amount of gold for our troubles. Also some heavy armor and a spell scroll I can't read." She holds the spell scroll out towards Briny. "You or Uragum could probably decipher it though."
Hex's grin fades slowly as she looks around the cave, her eyes lingering on the rotting bones and the excitement of finding the gold wanes. "While I agree that we need to find the rest of the books, the dragon might come back while we're asleep and I don't think that'd be good for any of us, especially Briny and I. Not to mention, I need more arrows... We should definitely rest. Just... not here. Maybe nearby so your little bird friend can still find you but I'd rather we head back to town in the morning."
"We will sleep in shifts," Sylyra replies, pocking the gold handed to him. "I only need to rest for about four hours. During that time, the three of you can take turns keeping watch."
"Reat regardless would be good. I would like to regain some of my dwindling magic but a guard duty is a must. If we have a rest so does it but to be honest, if we leave without killing the dragon. There is a good chance he will cause trouble. No dragon worth its stones will let a group of adventures raid its hoard, nearly kill it and just let the matter go." Uragum adds.
Sylyra's head whips around to look in the cave at Uragum's words. "Its hoard?" he says, his voice cracking a little. He looks back at the goliath. "You think this was its hoard?" He reaches in and pulls out the treasure he just pocketed. He opens his fingers and eyes the glittering coins for a few seconds before sticking the hand back in his pocket.
"Even if one of us is on watch, if it comes back in the middle of our rest, I still wouldn't be in any condition to fight. The dragon can fly. I have no arrows or magic that can reach it. I'd be completely useless." Hex looks uncharacteristically dejected at the thought of being useless in combat. "Can we just rest somewhere a little safer? And head to town in the morning to replenish supplies?"
After around a half hour of discussion, Sylyra's bird returns. Its dejected hopping and beast speech carry meaning to Sylyra.
For Sylyra:
The bird is unable to explain in great detail, but it seems it was unable to spot any creature of the dragon's size within the air or spot anything along the ground within the marsh or its surroundings. You sense a great deal of relief that the bird believes the creature is not around any longer.
Sylyra thanks the bird. Unintentionally, Sylyra also sounds relieved.
Using a haughty tone of voice, the elf tells the others, "The creature is gone. There's no reason to remain." Turning to begin slogging back toward town, Sylyra's shoulders slump, and his demeanor finally reveals how he physically feels — like he's 1 hp away from unconsciousness.
Hex is also relieved as Sylyra tells the news, only for her expression to morph into confusion at him but doesn't say anything. As the party prepares to leave, she takes a moment to glance around for the singular arrow she managed to shoot to see if she could at least salvage it for the journey back but no longer than a moment as she doesn't want to take up any more time. Regardless of the result, she is more than happy to get a move on.
Briny stands up to follow Sylyra. "It certainly would not be good to face the dragon again without supplies. We really should try to get our hands on those books he flew off with, did that bird have any kind of location information? I don't know what kind of things a person can talk to a bird about..."
OOC: Feel free to continue any conversation as the party heads back toward town. Last call for claiming non-gold items found in the dragon's lair as well.
The journey back through the mucky waters of the swamp is tiresome, but by sunset the lights of Phlan are spilling over its walls to light your way back. Night sets in as your weary feet pass through the Stojanow Gate. The streets are still busy, lit by posted lights along the road.
