"It certainly would not be good to face the dragon again without supplies. We really should try to get our hands on those books he flew off with, did that bird have any kind of location information? I don't know what kind of things a person can talk to a bird about..."
Sylyra sighs. "The dragon was gone," was all he said over his shoulder to the curious woman.
When the suggestion of food and turning in is proposed, and then Hex says she's passing on food, Sylyra silently agrees and heads home.
The next morning, the elf is awake and waiting for the others at the Laughing Crown. He looks well put together and clean, with a smirk on his face. His head of white-blonde hair is uncovered — held high and proud. "Shall we report our findings and collect our reward?" he asks happily.
Briny seems willing to eat something with Uragum even as the others head off. Before Hex leaves Briny will walk a few steps with her and ask "Do you think the Zhentarim would have any information on this cult that the dragon is working for? Surely a faction with that prestigious of an enforcer would have some kind of rumors going around about them."
After eating either with Uragum or alone, she would decide to find her own seperate lodging for the night, agreeing to meet back at the Laughing Crown in the morning.
She shows up looking a little wrinkled and tired, with messy hair that has had fingers run through it many times. She makes an agreeable "Mmm" sound and nods unenthusiastically at Sylyra. She sets her pack on the table where it's easier to get into it. She doesn't open the top all the way, just enough to pull out the recovered book before she shuts the pack again.
For Hex and Sylyra ((I peeked at your Passive perceptions, sorry Uragum!))
If you happen to be watching Briny take out the recovered book you get a glimpse of the corner of another book, thin, bound in old leather that is cracking.
Hex taps her chin at Briny's question, thinking for a bit. "Hmm, they definitely do. The question is whether or not they'll actually tell us anything of use." She gives Briny an apologetic smile. "I'll ask though. Just for you."
Instead of turning in for the night immediately, Hex goes to see Chaab to quickly ask him about the Cult of Dragons and if he has any information that might be helpful to the party. She also updates him on how the job went before heading out to replenish her arrow supplies and finally flopping into bed. (Buying 40 arrows for 2gp) In the case she isn't able to catch him that night, she'd go see him after the party has reported to Cassra.
Lil extra bit for the DM:
Hex does speak well of Briny's performance but agrees with Chaab's previous assessment of her. Briny's intelligence is quite useful and she was a good member of the team but her personality did seem, for lack of a better word, a little soft for the faction. Despite this, however, Hex believes she has great potential and just needs a little more time to get to know Briny before being able to give a full report on her suitably with the Zhentarim.
In the morning, Hex joins the group a bit later, treating herself to a little sleep in considering what had happened the day before. When she goes to sit down, she tilts her heading curiously at Sylyra's seemingly good mood and Briny's ruffled state. "Looks like you two had a good sleep." she jokes. She looks towards Briny and reaches out to move a hair from the sorcerer's face. "Did you actually sleep at all? You look almost worst than you were last night, which is saying something considering you got knocked out by a dragon."
OOC: Characters have gained the benefits of a long rest. Sylyra and Uragum can switch up their list of prepared spells if they wish. Added 40 arrows and removed 2 gp from Hex's inventory. Removed 1 gp from each character's inventory for the day's living expenses.
For Hex:
Chaab takes your report with a sigh. "Now dragons themselves..." he mutters, before answering, "We are looking into this Cult of Dragons. They are an old organization; outside of the older elves and dwarves, not many know their history or purpose, but they seem to be much more active of late, and particularly here in Phlan. There is surely something here they are looking for, and whatever it is, we will find it first."
At the mention of Ellison, he seems somewhat irked. "A shame, really. The boy sounds like a skilled thief. He could have had a place among us or the Welcomers, but wasted his talents and his life - couldn't even do us the decency of hanging from Stojanow Gate to clear our name."
"Do not forget to relay this information to Glevith's contact in the Black Fist. If they still suspect the Zhentarim or the Welcomers of these thefts, then this was all for naught," he concludes.
OOC: Please continue the RP threads, and when you're ready, let me know where the first destination is for the day and we'll get moving!
Briny blushes very slightly at Hex's action, then fans a hand through her hair again from the forehead to the crown to pull anymore stray hairs away from her face. "I got a couple of hours, I'll sleep tomorrow. Or, tonight. I let the scholar in me take over and had a look through that book of lineages. It's awfully dry stuff, but I don't think Ellison found what he was looking for in there. What's odd to me isn't his missing lineage though, but that lordly guy at the magic shop, um, Lamarck? His family name isn't there either." That last word is almost stifled by a yawn that is almost too big to be covered by a polite hand.
Hex looks slightly shocked at first but after a moment of though she lets out a laugh. "I would say I'm shocked that he isn't in there but... well. Let's just say I dont think I'm ever going to get over his so called "alarm" for the book."
Once everyone is good to go, Hex is ready to head off with everyone to report back to Cassra and then Aleyd Burral.
Cassra Brandywine is in her office again when you make your return to Mantor's Library. The Scribe Master's blonde hair, along with her sling and the rest of her clothing, is covered in smudges of blue ink. She looks up from the door as she opens it and grimaces, "Do you know how hard it is to keep up with one hand?" She shakes her head and leans i back against her desk. "You're back though, that's good. Had me a little worried, the way you all looked last time I saw you."
While the party is walking to go see Cassra, Hex walks besides Briny and let's her know what Chaab told her about the Cult. "They're an incredibly old organisation and no one really knows what they want. As of late though, they've been a lot more active, especially in Phlan. So basically, not much we didn't already know unfortunately."
Once at Cassra's, Hex looks apologetic. "I'm glad we caught you here but, really, shouldn't you be resting? How are you back to work already?" She shakes her head disapprovingly before updating the Scribe Master on what had occurred since the last time the party met up with her.
"Also, while we're here, wasn't sure if we should return this to you or Lamarck at first but now I think it would be better off in your hands." She turns to nudge Briny to return the book. As she does, she leans in a little close and tilts her head to the side, whispering to her, "That other little book in your bag wouldn't happen to be one of the books Cassra's been looking for, would it?"
"Well, I suppose one book is better than none. You've earned partial payment for that, at least," Cassra says. She breathes a sigh of relief after Hex's update. "Garda was a good scribe, and a hard worker. There's no bringing him back, but at least his murderer isn't out there any more. In the meantime, his work falls to me," she says.
OOC: Cassra provides 25 gp for the retrieval of Lords and Lineages of Phlan. Added 6 gp to each character's inventory, which leaves 1 gp left over to claim.
Briny goes a bit white when Hex mentions the other book. "It's definitely not, it's an... old heirloom. I can't really talk about it here." Her voice is quiet and her darting glance takes in everyone that might be in earshot.
Hex simply nods and smiles at Briny before turning back to Cassra. "Well we should probably get going. One more person to report back to. See you around Cassra and take care of yourself."
OOC: Since it was unclaimed the remaining gold piece goes to Hex because she was driving the conversation.
After bidding Cassra farewell, it takes the remainder of the day's light to track down Aleyd Burral within the Black Fist. The city's guards lead you from one location to the next trying to keep up with Aleyd's busy schedule, and you finally catch up with her at a guard post near Stojanow Gate late in the evening. The aged human knight still carries a relentless energy, and her stern gaze passes you over.
"You bring good news, I hope. We've not had a report of a theft since we spoke; please tell me you've learned something of the thief," she says with trepidation.
Sylyra gives the woman a sly grin. "Dispatched," he says with a slight air of superiority. "Ellison Be — something or other. He was a scribe at the library, and he was in league with a dragon. A small one, but still a dragon. Rythnax is it's name. The creature, unfortunately, got away." By the end of his report, the elf has become very serious. He then looks confused. It is a brief revelation of the emotion, and then Sylyra is once again looking down his nose confidently. "Tell her about the cult," he says to no one in particular. He tosses back his head, the curtains of his white-blonde hair swinging slightly.
Hex steps forward to inform Aleyd about the Cult, telling her what they've learned about them and including brief descriptions of the party's previous encounters with the Cult as well as their newly discovered interest in the Pool of Radiance. "You wouldn't happen to anything about the Pool, would you?"
OOC: Nothing quitelike airport delays to stoke the creative juices.
Aleyd can't help but break from her stoic gaze as your findings are relayed. "Well, I'm impressed. You discovered and dispatched a thief, chased off a dragon, and solved my endless paperwork by replacing it with...even more paperwork, by the sounds of it."
To Hex, she answers, "I know nothing of this pool, but if this cult has a dragon then they do concern me. Especially if they've had a consistent presence here." She grimaces and sighs.
"Nevertheless, you exceeded my expectations. I asked you to investigate, and investigate you did. You've earned your payment."
OOC: Added 12 gp to each character's inventory. The remainder of a gold piece each goes to Sylyra and Hex for carrying the conversation.
Sylyra gladly accepts his payment. As the group leaves Aleyd's office, the elf seems to be a little lighter on his feet, though he is tight-lipped and aloof if questioned.
Sylyra's main goal during this down time:
I need a feather, tuft of fur, and fish tail inside a gilded acorn worth at least 200 gp. Can I complete this in 10 days? What time will I have left over? And how much money will I have left over?
Something I know he'd have time to fit in around other things:
Sylyra writes a letter home describing all he's been up to since his last letter. He accentuates his accomplishments and skips over the mundane. He writes at length about the dragon (describing it not as a wyrmling, but as a full-sized dragon), how he charged headlong toward it, and how the creature was scared away.
After the meeting with Aleyd, Hex would walk besides Briny and speak with her for a bit. "You don't have to worry about that little book of yours, by the way. I just wanted to make sure you weren't trying to hide anything relating to the job from us. You don't need to tell me anything if you're uncomfortable as well. You seemed pretty spooked when I asked you about it." She does a bad job hiding the bit of guilt in her eyes as she speaks to Briny, having not intended to scare the sorcerer when she questioned her in Cassra's office. Despite the guilt, however, her curiosity in what exactly the book means to Briny is plain to see.
Hex is going to spend the downtime mundanely for the most part, just doing odd jobs around town to earn any extra coin she can and keeping an ear out for anything related to the Cult. I would also like to buy just one Potion of Healing if there is any available in town and upgrade Hex's armor to Studded Leather. She'd trade in her old leather and pay whatever's left over in gold if possible.

"Its late. How about we get some food, some rest and break the news in the morning when respectable establishments are open again." Uragum says.
Hex hums in agree with Uragum. "I think I'll pass on the food and just crash for now. Lets meet up in the morning and report back to Cassra?"
"It certainly would not be good to face the dragon again without supplies. We really should try to get our hands on those books he flew off with, did that bird have any kind of location information? I don't know what kind of things a person can talk to a bird about..."
