"Of course! I can make more tea!" replies Cobweb. "The Material Plane! What a coincidence! We were just there! ...It's such a dreary place." "Delightfully dreary," apologies Toadhop. "And kind of boring," continues Cobweb. "But in a fun way!" adds Toadhop. "We did find this, though," continues Cobweb. She points to the 6-inch-long wooden wedge lying on the ground. "I'm certain it's a slice of cake made for a treant." "No," objects Hemlock, her mouth full of cake. "it’s an exercise bench for mice." Toadhop shakes his head vigorously. "It’s a troll’s toothpick. Look at the shape." "You must settle this! You're from the Material Plane! What is it?" Cobweb fills her little kettle from a waterskin, and produces an arcane purple flame beneath it.

"You know, I used to think the same thing. But I kind of miss it, now," Titaani says in response to the fey's claim that the material plane is boring. Picking up the wooden thing, she inspects it. "Hmm. Let me think..."
Titaani carefully examines the battered piece of old wood. Judging from its size, shape, and the marks on it, it seems pretty clear it's a well-used doorstop.
Meanwhile, Morgort paces uncomfortably near the balloon's slightly-damaged basket. "I'm not sure I've ever been so far from the water! Where do you swim around here?" she asks nobody in particular. "Do you guys know where you're going from here? Will you scout for some swamp?"
”I do not recall any swamps here, but the Wayward Pool is a wonderful place to swim,” says Ben once the basket is secure. “I wouldn’t mind going by Little Oak’s grove and checking on the lost boys, either—they know how to get to the pool.”

"It looks like a doorstop to me," Titaani says. "We use them to hold open doors, so no one ever feels unwelcome. Where I live, we keep the door open for as long as possible, and people can come in and chat whenever they like."
"Well, that sounds friendly..." begins Toadhop, uncertainly, to Titaani.
"But kind of boring," finishes Cobweb. "You sure it's not something else? You sure it's not treant cake?"
Matilda scours the landscape. They are in a wide circle of trees hung with moss. The toadstool circle at the center is empty, and undamaged by the balloon landing. There seems to be nobody else around except the pixies, nor any apparent threats. But no landmarks, nor any real sense of where they are.
"Well, I'll be staying right here guarding the balloon while you all do your business," announces Morgort. "'Nless you find me a swamp to refill my balloon with."
Pud rung his bell pretty good upon impact. He took seat nearby and recovered while Titaani conversed with the fairies. He crawls over to the gathering and sits cross legged while listening to the debate.
"...Pardon me...did I hear that y'all just came back from the material plane? Do you travel there all that often?"

"Oh, sometimes!" replies Hemlock, her mouth full of more cake. "It's a Crossing" she explains, pointing at the fairy ring nearby. "Isn't that how you got here? Granny Nightshade corrupted as many of the rings as she could find, but she doesn't know about this one! Needs to be eight of you. No way for you material folk to come back once you go, though. At least that I know of."
"What do you think this is?" she adds, changing the subject and bending over to lift the triangle of wood. "Mice exercise bench, right?"
Pud lets out an audible sigh. For a brief moment he thought they might have found a ticket out of this weird place.
"Huh? Wha...? Oh.That wedge? Lemme see it."Pud reaches out for the wooden doorstop. "Well, uh. It does look kinda like a doorstop...but...you know what, I think it is an exercise bench for a mouse. Yeah, that's it!"

"Oh! Good point, sis. Do you guys know where the wayward pool is?" Titaani asks the faeries. At Pud's suggestion about the use of the doorstop, Titaani blinks stupidly for a moment. Then, finally, she catches on. "Oh! Oh. You know what, I think I made a mistake as well. It is an exercise bench for a mouse!"
Toadhop and Cobweb immediately object. "No, that's ridiculous!" cries Toadhop. "Mice don't exercise like that! They'd want something softer! Look at the grooves. It's a giant toothpick!" But Cobweb shakes her head in frustration and tuts.
"Wayward Pool? Sure – about a league that way. Turn widdershins 'round the rock. Unicorns only – you won't be let in," replies Hemlock, confidently.

“Morgort, you should consider coming with us to the Wayward Pool if you would like to go for a swim in the most welcoming water I have ever been to,” suggests Ben.
Moving over to address the Pixies, Ben says in Sylvan, “Thank you for your hospitality and directions. Is there anything else you would like to discuss before we leave?”

Immediately recognizing the implement from his years of masonry experience, Ben decides to give a more…loquacious…answer than he usually would.
”Ah, yes, the elegant and effective Inclined Plane! It comes in many angles and can be made from many materials. This specimen is of a moderate angle and composed of sturdy hardwood. You see, its purpose is to give mechanical advantage by transferring the horizontal force applied to the thick end into a vertical force applied along the inclined plane, thus multiplying the applied load by a factor determined by the slope of the inclination,” Ben says, attempting to be erudite enough to make the pixies happy with their loot from the material plane.

"Huh?" Titaani stares at Ben, mouth agape. "Wow. I didn't realise you were so smart, Ben!"
"You don't need to worry about the unicorns only thing," Titaani says, turning back to the faeries. "We're good friends! Also, could you keep an eye on the balloon while we are gone?"
"Yes, yes, I'll accept your mechanical explanation, but what does it DO?" persists Toadhop to Ben. "That was a very Material Plane answer."
"Yes, spoken just like a Material Planer," agrees Cobweb, nodding, who then puts on a gruff accent: "Angle! hardwood! force! grey grey incline gruel dull dig dig rot!" she mimics. "Just teasing," she adds. "You clearly know boring Material mechanics better than we."
Cobweb turns to Titaani to answer her balloon request. "Well, we can occasionally put six eyes on it, but we lack the strength to stop it should it blow off somewhere."

Matilda looks pleased they've found a heading and marks the toadstool ring in case they need to leave in an emergency in the future....
"Uh, maybe... will the balloon be safe here?" asks Morgort, uncertainly, looking at the half-inflated contraption.
"Yes." answers Toadhop to Ben's question. "What is this?" He picks up the wooden wedge, pointedly.
