There’s not much inside the box. A journal or two, large, rolled-up pieces of paper, and a some art supplies. A lot of charcoal, and a lot of paint. The journals look like plain, lined paper, with sketches and annotations of what look like art pieces. Some correspond to the paintings on the rolled up sheets of paper. As you’re looking through the box, though, a single thing catches your eye: a folded up wad of paper at the bottom of the box. It’s not creased too heavily, suggesting it was folded recently. There are two pieces of paper.
“I know what you did,” the first one says, in neat, precise lettering. It takes up the whole page.
The second page has “Check the music box," written on it in the same script. It also covers the whole page.
Nym stares hard at the pen and paper he previously pushed in your direction, and is fighting back tears as he listens to your next few questions. To your first question he shakes his head "no," and to your second question he does the same but only after a second of hesitation. He clears his throat and in a hoarse voice he says, "She threw her music box at the wall a few days before she died. That was strange. I wasn't there but when I asked her about it she said it was nothing." He looks down at his hands, which are now pinching the fabric of his pants. "She loved that music box."

The Town Hall is across the street and a few blocks down from where you stand. Assuming you all go directly there first, the big oak doors of the Town Hall's entrance swing open easily as you step inside the building. A long, echoey hallway stands between you and the only other person in the room: a brightly colored macaw kenku at the reception desk, wearing a name pin that says her name is "Jacquelyn." She smiles, and presses one of the many buttons on the dashboard in front of her as you approach. "Hello, welcome to the Esperal Town Hall, how may I help you?" comes from a mouth that appears on a plain black box that is connected to the dashboard through a series of wires.

Zanibi looks at piece of paper she drew out of the box. "Ohhh!" she says, then looks at a second paper. "Truador! There was a paper that looks like maybe it was hidden here in this box. It says, 'I know what you did.' Then this other paper says, 'Check the music box.'" She holds out the papers to the Dragonborn.
"I wonder if Calda saw these notes, then threw the music box upon seeing what was in the music box," she surmises. "Oh! Or the 'Check the music box' note was somewhere easily found and the 'I know what you did' was in the music box!" Zanibi seems excited. "Perhaps this points to a motive? I think I should look for magic. You think we have enough time for me to cast it? It'll take a few minutes."
She doesn't wait for an answer but starts to chant, 'Nillis Twarbi Abvoll! Kialeu Gootal Aboll!' As she repeats the sounds, she makes motions with her hands, casting Detect Magic as a ritual. Once complete, she will first examine the music box. Then the papers. And then start to scan the rest of the room, especially the bed and pillows.
Truador nods, "Those are good theories. Though I wouldn't be surprised if whatever was in the music box is no longer in this room. The killer visited the other crime scenes, so they likely came here as well."
When the gnome starts casting her spell, Truador patiently waits for her to complete it. He is interested in what she might find.
"Yes, we are here on behalf of Mayor Lagash as part of an investigative team looking into the recent deaths you have had in Esperal. The calls we need to make are three and are of great importance to the investigation."Inquisitive said with a polite smile to the colourful kenku.
I'll tell you a little bit but if you want to know more, make Perception and Investigation rolls! Or cast Identify. Either one.
It doesn't look like there's any magic on or inside the music box, or on the paper. When you move to examine the bedsheets and the pillow, it feels like there's some sort of magical aura located right at the center of the pillowcase. It doesn't belong to any school of magic.

A friendly "Hello!" comes from the mouth-box as you greet Jaquelyn, Marvin. When you and Inquisitive both explain why you're here, her eyes grow wide and she nods her head with a bright smile. Next to the button dashboard is a small map with more buttons scattered across its surface. She presses one of these buttons and the mouth-box speaks again, "Phones are down the hall and to the right. They're mounted on the wall."
(ooc: By all means, feel free to do it, Marvin.)

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Nothing on the music box or paper," Zanibi muses as she looks over each item. She then makes her way over to the bed. "Here though I see something on the pillow." She spends a moment looking around the bed and pillow further to see if there are any more signs of magic. (Investigation: 21)
She then starts chanting again, 'Aglumb Uremma Dipika! Virtim Linolo Dipka!' casting Identify as a ritual to see if she can learn any more about the magic on the pillow.
"Thank you."Inquisitive said with a nod, turning and following the directions of colourful kenku, hoping to find the phones. "So I thought we would want to speak to Elibyn's wife Jezean Ambershadow, Thaymoor’s therapist Andaren Rogers and Valrel Rondro, the police investigator that led the investigation into the deaths of Elibyn's parents. If they have several phones would any of want to make one of the calls or should we handle them together?" The tiefling asked Amy and Marvin as they walked the corridor.
Amy tugs on her ring. "I think we should do them together. I'm just worried I'd forget to ask something important, but..." she swallows. "I've been thinking, and I know it's unlikely, but war breeds a lot of things." She looks between Inquisitive and Marvin.
"The chances of everything being related to the Civil War are slim, but its something I want to keep in mind, right?"
Inquisitive nodded to Amy. "I'm not even sure the chances for that are slim Amy, but we will know more in a while. As you said, war breeds a lot of things and chances are that something happened, at least related to the war, that someone now is exacting some kind of twisted justice for." He said with a friendly smile. "Together then?"He said, looking at Marvin for confirmation as they continued down the corridor.
There's nothing else on the pillow of the bedsheets. Just the strange magic. As you begin the ritual, however, you feel a growing suspicion that the spell is exactly the same as the one you identified on Elibyn's pillow. Once you finish casting the spell, you find your suspicions to be right on the mark, except thisCouchmare spell was triggered over a week ago.
Truador:
Looking around the room, you don't find anything too important. Sketchbooks, papers, paint, clothes, and more mundane items litter the room. Carefully sifting through objects yield no effects, but then something shiny in the gap between the wall with the dent and the end of Calda's bed catches your eye. It's relatively close to both the dent and where Zanibi found the music box. Upon closer inspection, it looks like... a severed finger. Sinewy and grey, the finger has a plain gold band on the base, and the knuckles are so swollen it looks like can't be removed.

When you arrive to the destination Jaquelyn directed you to, you find four wall-mounted rotary phones. On a little card, glued underneath the dial, is a list of international area codes. One of you (whoever wants to use the phone) unhooks the phone from the wall, and after the line rings a few times a voice comes from the other side of the phone. "Operator. Who would you like to speak with?"

Zanibi nods her head slowly, "Well, nothing new. But I can confirm this spell is the same one that was on Elibyn's pillow." She gives the room a last glance, "Did you see anything else Truador? Perhaps we should see how Nyral is doing?"
Inquisitive took the phone off the wall and held it so that Amy and Marvin could listen in if they stood fairly close to him. "I would like to Speak to Andaren Rogers at extension 555 please."(or whatever extension Pisor would use) The tiefling said with a firm voice, looking up with a small smile at Amy and Marvin.
Nyral nods towards him and asks "Was the music box sentimental in some way? Perhaps a family heirloom?" Nyral asks to begin a conversation on her past and hoping to find out if she has any connection to the past like Inquisitive mentioned might be important. Nyral will try to steer the conversation with Nym about Calda and her past. After he answers about the music box nyral will follow up with questions on her possible connection to the Civil War. As Nyral understands, it happened awhile ago and she would of been too young back then but perhaps her parents fled with her.
Truador bends down to pick something up off the floor. Turning around, he holds it up to show Zanibi. It is a severed finger, with a gold band on it. "Yes, this was on the floor right here." He points, at the area between where Zanibi had found the box, and where he had found the dent. "Do we know if Calda wore a ring? Or if her corpse was found with a missing finger?"
