This stone arena is the site of gladiatorial games (usually nonlethal, but accidents happen), bloody animal combats, and spectacular circuses. The best gladiators become celebrities and earn fortunes. Statues of the arena’s greatest champions line the tops of the Grand Coliseum’s walls, including one of the city’s current merchant princes. (Ekene-Afa gained fame and fortune as a gladiator before retiring from the arena to become a trader and politician.)
Events are held on most afternoons; only special shows are held after sundown, as the coliseum depends on natural light. During the week, the bill features qualifying matches, consolation bouts, and other small events. Major events, championships, and special extravaganzas are staged on holidays. A holiday show might include a battle between “heroes of legend” and “pirates” (all portrayed by gladiators), a bloody match pitting velociraptors against tigers, or even a contest of mages battling captured ghouls, skeletons, or zombies.
At other times of the day, they have various Dinosaur racing if it's not going to be through the streets of Port Nyanzaru.
The sands were cleaned from the earlier gladiator battles and now it was set up for the Dino races. Another favorite pastime of Chultans.
People love to come early for these events. The dinosaurs are lined up out on the field for all to see and try and figure out who to make wagers on for the coming races. The jockeys are sitting in chairs next to their dinosaurs dressed in flamboyant colors with a number on their back that matches the number on the dinosaur.
You can see young children out on the field looking at the dinosaurs and there is a huge crowd around a young Triceratops named Ubtao's favorite. You have learned that this dino has won the last four races in a row and is the crowd favorite to win today.
Next to that is a young T-rex, almost 15' tall and full of muscle. His name is Big Honker and as kids go near him he makes a sort of Honking sound, hence his name. He is another crowd favorite and does really well in the no holds barred races where the jockeys and dinosaurs actually fight along the track as they race. His speed always makes him a favorite but he doesn't look as energetic as usual you hear people say.
Banana Candy, a well-trained hadrosaurus, is doing tricks for the kids. They are asking him to sit and he does. They ask him to beg and he makes attempts to do so. He reminds you of a very large well-trained dog.
Bonecruncher is next, a young, ill-tempered allosaurus, that everyone gives a wide berth. He snaps as kids get close to him and he doesn't look too happy sitting here next to the other dinos.
Grung Stomper, a young ankylosaurus, has had his fair share of wins and failures. Some kids are petting him and he is just sitting there enjoying the downtime.
Scarback is next. A 20' tall T-rex that is rippling with muscle and teeth the size of short swords. He is fidgety around the kids but no one is really afraid of him. You learn that this is his last race.
Nasty Boy, a young allosaurus that has been trained by the best trainer in Port has not lived up to the trainer's reputation and people aren't happy with his performance but rumors are that today is his day.
Jungle Princess, a deinonychus that is standing still and just looking at the crowd You would swear it had a bored look on its face. You learn that the jockey for this dino is a scaredy cat and because of that this dino never really wins much. The owner is the Jockeys father and won't change him so this dino never really has a chance but people bet anyway for the long shot hoping to make good coin.
The last dino is Mountain Thunder, an aging dimetrodon. He has been around the circuit for almost five years. that is a very long time in dino racing years. He used to be a champion back in his day but now he just races because the fans love him. The owner makes more money on sponsorship then he does on the dino actually winning. Mountain Thunder does have the loyal fans that bet on him every race.

Kvothe's eyes light up "you're on" he says to Tagagart. "You've gone for Nasty Boy so lets split the risk. I'll put 50 GP on Scarback" he finishes with.
There is a loud horn sound and the kids begin running off the track. Once the track is free and clear of the kids the jockeys get up out of their chairs and hop up onto their dinosaurs. Once the track is cleared of debris and the jockeys chairs the dinosaurs begin to walk around the track, roaring as they pass by the group of kids making a huge spectacle. The crowd erupts in applause as the dinosaurs make the circuit.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, please head back to your seats. The race will begin in fifteen minutes. Again please get back to your seats the Dinosaurs need to get their legs moving and stretch."
As Scarback walks past the starting line the Announcer says "This is Scarbacks last race Ladies and Gentlemen, please give Scarback a great round of applause. He brought us many years of delight but his owner would like to breed him for future winners if you can believe that."
After the walking lap, the dinosaurs line up at the starting gate and the crowd begins to chant out to their favorite dinosaurs. The energy buzzing around the place is electric and you can't help but feel the excitement.
The horn sounds and Big Honker leaps out of the gate first. You hear a mighty roar from the young T-Rex and then it snaps his teeth at the other dinosaurs, trying to intimidate them. At first, it seemed like it worked because most of the other dinosaurs backed away from Big Honker except Mountain Thunder.
"Mountain Thunder isn't afraid of Big Honker, considering he is deaf." The man next to you says as he begins laughing. "Big Honker tries that tactic every race. You'd think the other dinos would be used to it by now."
Coming around the first turn, Big Honker is in the lead with Mountain Thunder on his heels and Ubtao's Favorite in third. Bonecruncher is in the middle of the pack snapping at the other dinosaurs trying to break free from the crowd with Nasty Boy and Scarback right on his heels. As the dinos continue racing they come upon the second turn and Big Honker is still in the lead but Mountain Thunder is beginning to overcome Big Honker.
Nasty Boy springs past Bonecruncher and Ubtao's Favorite to take the third place spot as Scarback tries to sprint past Bonecruncher, Bonecruncher slams into him and knocks him off balance as Scarback slams into the wall and falls to the ground.
The Jockey for Big Honker begins to smack the side of the T-rex with his riding crop and Big Honker roars once more. Bonecruncher gives a roar of his own and begins to pour on the speed at the straight away but Nasty Boy was trained by the best and has another burst of speed and overcomes Mountain Thunder and is right behind Big Honker.
It only takes a few moments but by the time they hit the third turn, Nasty Boy passes Big Honker as does Mountain Thunder as well. Coming around the fourth turn and hitting the final straightaway, Nasty Boy is in the lead with Mountain Thunder a foot behind.
The jockey for Big Honker continues to smack his dino in the side with his riding crop and finally, Big Honker has had enough and shakes his body violently making the jockey fly off. Just as Nasty Boy crosses the finish line with Mountain Thunder in second, and Bonecruncher in third a loud horn sounds signaling the end of the race.
"And there you have it, Ladies and Gentlemen. Nasty Boy came through finally and it the winner, followed by Mountain Thunder and then Bonecruncher. Very exciting race. The next one will start in 15 minutes."
The crowd erupts in applause at the sound of the horn until Big Honker leans down and rakes its tiny claws across his jockeys leg, blood begins to pour out onto the sand as people run out onto the track with large metal poles with metal cable loops at the end of them. The quickly catch the young T-Rex as the healer walks out onto the track and heals the poor jockey that has lost consciousness.
The man next to you says "Exciting race. That usually doesn't happen until the no holds barred races. You really need to see them when the dinos are set free to do what they wish on the track. No rules, They fight until they cross the finish line. Very exciting."
My Die Roll: @DM BorakNasty Boy for the win? Needs a 1: 1d4 (1) Total: 1 Taggart when you go hand in your betting slip they give you a pouch with the 300 gold.
Yellow claps wildly, bouncing on her feet a little. "Hoorah, Nasty Boy!" she hollers. She looks over at the boys. "Did any of you win anything? It's too bad Scarback didn't win. I'll miss seeing him in the races."
The dino's line up and then sit down waiting for the next race as the bookies begin shouting out the odds once again giving time for people to bet. Scarback is still in the race and people are hoping he wins one of the next two races before he retires.
The groundskeepers are cleaning up the track of dino poop and smoothing it out so the track is even for all dino's.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, The next race will start in 10 minutes, Place your bets."
Bonecrusher had a good show and I think that race was just his warm up, I bet he will pull through this time. 100 gold on Bonecrusher! Common Kvothe this is too much fun make another pick.

The loud Gong sounds and the dino's trample forward. Big Honker does a mighty roar and Jungle Princess slams into his side knocking him to the left and he gets off balance for just a moment and all the dinos run past him.
"Here we go ladies and gentlemen, Banana Candy is in the lead followed by Bonecruncher, Ubtao's Favorite and Grung Stomper. Bringing up the rear is Big Honker who tried his usual tactics but Jungle Princess slammed into him and knocked him off course a bit."
Coming around the first turn you have Banana Candy clearly in the top spot, "Banana Candy hasn't won in over 3 tenday ladies and gentlemen so don't get your hopes up." Grung Stomper knocks into Ubtaos favorite slamming her into the arena wall and she falls down.
"Can you believe that ladies and gentlemen? Grung Stomper decided to take on a little more than Grungs and knocked Ubtao's favorite clear on her ass. I doubt she will be able to recover from that."
The crowd cheers as Ubtao's favorite hits the sands. Coming towards the second turn Big Honker begins to pour on the speed You can see the massive muscles in its legs working overtime as the young T-rex picks up speed.
"Coming around the second turn you have Banana Candy, Bone Cruncher, Grung Stomper, Jungle Princess and Big Honker making its move."
The Dinos finish the second turn and come to the long straightaway. Bone Cruncher passes Banana Candy as Big Honker starts honking at the other Dinos snapping its teeth at them, Big Honker passes Jungle Princess and catches up to Grung Stomper and begins to pass him as they come into the third turn.
"Did you see that ladies and gentlemen? Everyone knows the mighty T-Rex is the fastest animal in the jungle and this just proves it. Big Honker has made his move and is now in striking distance for the win."
Bonecruncher feet begin to lose traction on the sands and when it comes around the third turn it slips and falls slamming into the arena wall putting it out of the race.
"Ouch, that's going to leave a mark on Bonecruncher. The jockey should've known to slow down around the turn. That leaves banana Candy once more in the lead, followed by Grung Stomper and Big Honker. No one else is even close to the top three right now ladies and gentlemen."
Coming around the last turn Big Honker nudges into Grung Stomper and Grung Stomper loses its footing as his rear end slides out just a little to make room for Big Honker to blow past him.
"Here we go ladies and gentlemen, The final stretch. It looks like Big Honker and Banana Candy are going to duel it out but we all know the outcome of this one. No one stands a chance against a T-rex on the last leg of the course."
Big Honker's jockey leans down and says something to the beast and Big Honker bursts forward and passes Banana Candy and leaves her in the dust.
"Win and I'll give you a cow for dinner Is what Miquel said to Big Honker ladies and Gentlemen and it looks like Big Honker is going to have some prime beef tonight."
Big Honker crosses the finish line and the gong tolls signaling the end of the race. Banana Candy crosses second and Mountain Thunder finishes in third.
"And there you have it, ladies and Gentlemen, Big Honker wins with a little bribery from his jockey. I sure do hope Miquel can deliver. I'm sorry to inform you all but this will be the last race for today. I got word that they need fix up the arena for a very special treat for everyone. Dengo promises it will be quite the show.
