It takes a special kind of person to become an adventurer, leaving their home to travel the world, perhaps never to return. It takes an even more special kind of person to become a spelljammer—to leave their home planet and venture out across the entire universe, or even beyond!
Spelljammer Academy is seeking six such people. No previous astral travel experience necessary!
Who can apply?
The Faerûn campus is recruiting cadets from Toril and its surrounding Realmspace. Character options from the new Spelljammer books and other core books are available (no MtG, Eberron or other noncore options, sorry, the new stuff is already a lot to choose from). You'll start at level 1 and advance to level 5 over the course of your training, before having the opportunity to strike out on true wildspace adventures. The academy does ask for a certain amount of commitment from its recruits; you should expect to generally be able to post at least once every day or two. Note that Evil aligned candidates are not being accepted at this time.
How will we play?
Play-by-post on this forum. I'll have an optional discord for away-from-the-table stuff but most stuff, including dice rolls, will be on the forum. You don't need to sign up for anything outside of D&D Beyond.
Will we graduate from the Academy and continue our adventures?
After your training you will be level 5, and so may want to move on to the new adventure Light of Xaryxis. Since it will be released in a day or two, I haven't had a chance to read through that adventure yet, so we'll see how the group feels about it when we get there.
How do I join?

Your character concept. This can be as simple as race/class combination, or as detailed a backstory as you want. No need to build your character sheet or roll ability scores yet! Keep in mind that the sort of people that become spelljammers tend not to have many ties to their previous homes; what drove your character to join the Academy?
What kind of role do you see for your character on a spelljamming vessel? Are they interested in being in command of your loyal crew; deftly maneuvering your ship between asteroids and black holes; or going hand-to-hand to repel boarding pirates?
A very brief summary of your experience with 5e, other RPGs, and/or play-by-post games. Newcomers to any or all of those are very much encouraged to apply, this is just to get an idea of where everyone's starting from.
I'll leave recruitment open for 72 hours, then choose up to six players. I look forward to hearing from you!
He had been practicing both magic and martial skills and sees himself as a bit of a warrior wizard. He would like to be part of the defense of the ship. He escaped certain death due to a nasty group of bandits taking over his hometown. He hopes to one day go back once he is strong enough or with friends to free his village.
I've been playing 5e for a few years now and PBP a year or so.
Character Concept: Satyr Bard, who was (allegedly) caught romancing the fiancee of an aristocrat, and fled town in a hurry. Getting offworld seems like a good idea, plus think of the epic songs and stories he can bring back!
Role:comic relief, morale, cook, healer, and he can wield a blade as well as a lute in a pinch.
Experience: 5e for several years, PBP for one year, both as player and DM. In the past have played previous versions of D&D as well as other tabletop RPGs.
(This would be my preferred character, but I can also play a tank type or a ship captain if we need one).
My character concept is a Wood Elf Monk who was raised on the streets, before being brought in by a local monastery. There he was given, food and clothing, but was also taught the art of Martial Arts. When he was of age he set out from the monastery, and after learning of spelljammer academy, decided he had more waiting for him amongst the stars than on terra firma
Role: a jokester, someone who could be in the thick of fighting, but he is quite a dextrous fellow, so being in control of the ship is something he would be interested in.
Experience: 5e for several years, this is only my second PbP campaign though.

I'd like to play a dwarven fighter (psi warrior eventually) who was shunned from his clan after weird things began to happen around him (an early manifestation of his mental powers). He was recruited by the Spell Jammers academy as he is a decently strong fighter, but also has a good head on his shoulders.
What kind of role do you see for your character on a spelljamming vessel? Are they interested in being in command of your loyal crew; deftly maneuvering your ship between asteroids and black holes; or going hand-to-hand to repel boarding pirates?
I see my character being a cross between the Security, and maybe, like a tactical officer
A very brief summary of your experience with 5e, other RPGs, and/or play-by-post games. Newcomers to any or all of those are very much encouraged to apply, this is just to get an idea of where everyone's starting from.
I have played a load of 5E, Pathfinder 1e and 2e, All previous DND editions, and a load other rpgs. I have played in countless play by post games, very familiar.
Concept:Human (variant) Hadozee Artificer, considering artillerist for the subclass. She and her brother had few prospects beyond their tinkering shop, so her brother joined the Academy. After graduating and shipping out, his ship went missing in Wildspace, so she's hoping to find some answers. She's infinitely curious, perhaps on the side of recklessness, but good-hearted and loves to learn new things and meet new people.
Role: Ship's arcane engineer. Keep the ship chugging along and keep the weapons systems ready to destroy anything that poses a threat. Could also serve as a pilot in a pinch, but they would probably prefer to leave that role to someone else.
Experience: Several years of 5e and PbP experience, I am currently running and taking part in several PbPs.
I would like to play a water Genasi Monk, although race can change if water Genasi not allowed. Named Yaris Hurley, he comes from a particular tribe of Genasi who compete yearly for the intake of spelljammers. The tribe value knowledge as a great power and being the one tribute a year to become a spelljammer is a great honour. This year is Yaris' year and after fierce competition with the fellow members of his tribe he has finally made it and has been chosen for training to become a spelljammer. He will live up to the pride and honour of the role and is determined to succeed in his training.
I think his primary role would be protecting the ship in hand to hand combat but aspires to learn the ways of space flight, not necessarily as the lead pilot but someone who can take the reins should it be needed. However, nothing quite fits his being as punching space pirates in the face.
I have had limited experience with 5e although have picked it up very quick. I have been in several campaigns which have not gone further than session 4 which is a nightmare! Play by post would definitely suit me due to working odd hours and hope Yaris can get to explore the universe and be a part of your campaign!
Name:Magnus Derelictus A human far too crafty for her own good, Magnus excels at making enemies just as often as she makes friends, her mouth getting her in and out of trouble. A curiosity for the occult led her to seek power beyond what she could handle, resulting in dire consequences and the loss of a close friend. Determined to learn all she could and make up for past mistakes, Magnus found her way to the spelljammer acadamy, though her newfound determination did nothing to dull her skill with words, and she can often be found in a bar either getting herself into trouble, or pursuing the company of men and women alike Role: A sort of jack of all trades, Magnus excels at bending the laws and magic and men to her will. When she can't find a loophole or talk her way out she prefers to go on the defensive, but has no particular qualms with violence.
Monk … but he is quite a dextrous fellow, so being in control of the ship is something he would be interested in.
My apologies, I should have noted: one restriction the rules have is that the pilot role requires a spellcaster, in order to attune to the helm of the ship. (It's a little unclear whether a Way of Shadow Monk's Shadow Arts counts or not, but we'll need a pilot before 3rd level in any case)
Also, everyone so far has gone for existing races, probably because the official list of new races wasn't out yet. So for reference, here's the new race options:
Astral elf, an elf denizen of the Astral Plane who is possibly hundreds of years old
Autognome, a mechanical gnome who has free will
Giff, a hippo-headed being of impressive size
Hadozee, a simian being who adapts well to the hazards of Wildspace
Plasmoid, an amoeba-like person
Thri-kreen, a telepathic, insectile being
Recruiting is still open for another… 55 or so hours, I look forward to more applicants making my choice even harder!
No Dnd experience and no php experience just curiosity and enthusiasm. I've some Elder Scrolls and Everquest xp.
Wanna take a risk on a completely blank slate? I'll be guided but not moulded - I'm no one's puppet and once I find my space legs I'll give as good as any other.
I want to be a Giff helmsman. I want to be as classically "east India trading company" as possible. I'm thinking a valor bard, with an eye patch.
I've a pretty solid amount of experience with pbp, and a little with live games of dnd. I run a classic dnd style game in discord, and ran a Dark Matter (third party space-future-age rules for dnd) for a bit, but it was awfully crunchy. Besides that, I run a cyberpunk game called lowlife 2090, which I cannot recommend enough.
I've looked up lots of spelljammer stuff prior to this ever being announced, much less released, so to say the least: I'm excited.
A plasmoid with natural talents in storm and and lightning control. (Sorc, storm sorcery) With unknown origins they snuck onto a spelljammer to escape whatever place they were in as they kept hurting Zap. Like a ball of gooey lightning it didn't take them long to realize that whatever they are is rare and valuable for something due to their ability to discharge lightning. The plasmoid made their escape from whatever testing facility they were in and made their way smuggled onto a spelljammer and to the rock of bral. They managed to find other plasmoid like beings as well as a bit of acceptance but none like them. Why they have so much electric energy is anyone's guess but it did earn them a name. Zap. Wasn't long after they were sent to the academy to learn more.
Role: pilot/student
The plasmoid seems to have a natural affinity with spelljamming helms. They found some work as a pilot making some gold to sustain themselves but never really got training. They are very curious and definitely not accustomed to the normalcy of others so lots of hilarity will likely ensue. Asking questions of others often in an attempt to learn and mimic other beings. The chance to join the academy and learn more is a perfect opportunity.
Experience: I got lots.
Been playing DND for 20 years. PBP for a bunch on and off depending on work. Current work allows me to post while at work so been having fun joining different PBP and playing lots of different characters. Discord is blocked but I can check that on breaks but posting on forums is a'ok so hearing most will be here works great for me.
I think the sci-fantasy of spelljammer is just too bizzare to pass up.
A character concept that comes to mind is the son to a family that has been space-faring for generations as protectors and guards. But now for the first time a child was granted magical abilities and the expectations are high! As (probably) a sorcerer is a combat-caster in a sense i would probably focus on utility and buffs. Actually steering a vessel through wildspace sounds intriguing
I have a solid amount of DnD-experience. I've just started my 5th year of playing and DMing, in person, online or through PbP.
Glamor bard if someone can share XGtE if not valor bard
role would be talking to crew in order to keep hopes high as well as making relations with other ships (absolutely down to drive a space boat with his trumpet)
born in the never winter woods to a small tribe of story tellers the small elf traveled the realm collecting stories from the past and present though he’s grown bored of the tales of evil dragons and sprawling dungeons and so he’s set off to to the academy to find tales on the astral sea and well why not write a few of his own along the way
ive been playing for close to a year I made it through half of the mad mage until scheduling conflict of course then we played a campaign made up by a bunch of one shots I’m now finishing up dragon of ice spire peak after that we will try mad mage again I also played in a hombres DMed by one of beyond pbp veterans barbarian Bruce sadly that has since fizzled out I also am DMing a pbp titled forgotten vigilantes which is a super hero esque faerune campaign finally I will hopefully be play a space bard soon
Would love to be a part of this game~ Excited to see what WotC has done for the "final frontier" lol.
The Concept: A Plasmoid Monk. Previously just another strange ooze, a strange encounter with divinity in the astral sea, led to this shapeless creation growing beyond what it was. After the god left, they followed their path until they happened across the Academy. They want to learn more about themselves, and what they can become, and if they need to become an adventurer to do so...why not?
Corben Merrick : Aside from general know-how on swimming the astral sea, he knows how to repair ships, fight, and make a mean sandwich.
Experience: Have been playing TTRPGs for 10 years, with 6 years experience with 5e. Of those years, 8 have been PbP or online games that took place in forums and the like. Limited experience with spelljammer though, and happy to see where things go~
Very interested in joining a Spelljammer campaign!
Character concept. Zaius, Hadozee Fighter with the wildspacer background. He was hiding aboard a spelljamming ship as a young child on a dare that quickly backfired when the ship pulled away from port. Discovered by the crew after they were far out into the Astral Sea, they were unable to return him home but ‘adopted’ him in the crew as a cabin boy. Marooned after his ship was overtaken in a pirate attack near Faerun, the Academy is his chance to get back into space and find his lost crew.
What kind of role do you see for your character on a spelljamming vessel? Has some previous experience as a basic deckhand, and will serve as a tactical specialist/security officer to repel boarders or take the fight to enemy ships.
A very brief summary of your experience. Lots of experience playing D&D and have been active on PbP for a little more than one year. This would be my first Spelljammer campaign, but excited about the lore and the space pirate flavor.
The Concept: Thri-keen Wizard thrown into the Academy on a whim of the aloof archemage that is supposed to be teaching him instead as part of an apprenticeship. There are not many of his kind in Faerun so for him the academy is way to be a bit less of a curiosity and maybe actually learn something
The Role: Ships pilot if needed, otherwise arcane lore and knowledge fountain
The Experience: Been playing DND since 2nd edition (though skipped 4th) and doing PbP since about the time Pathfinder came out. Have run guns and played in them, longest running one went for 8 years

I'm looking for a Spelljammer adventure
I have a character I've been working on. He has a pirate background and is Neutral Evil but this can easily be adapted.
It's a charismatic rogue that I can see as a supporting fighter / negotiator / security specialist
Coming from a dark background but still has a carefree attitude and a happy demeanor.
I'm relatively new to 5e and PbE but have been playing TTRPGs for 35 years.
