This sounds interesting. Let me apply for your game.
Character Concept: Garwin the Hexblade Warlock. A cynical but pragmatic variant human. He used to be a normal fisherman but was captured and forced to work on a pirate ship for years. After running away from the pirates, he is now looking for a new job and ship.
Role: Garwin will be the gunner of the ship with his Eldritch Blast. As a man of common sense, he could be the voice of reason for the ship.
Experience: I have several years experience of PbP games but only played Dungeons and Dragons for two years.
The Concept: Timjem,Autognome Druid that has fled their creator due to the creator being a corrupt smuggler and slaver. Sometime after his creation, there was a glitch in their programming, Timjem could no longer follow the commands of the violent and vile man that the Creator was. Timjem is short and wide, Built for vehicle maintenance, navigation, and auxiliary cargo storage. His main features being a refrigerated central compartment built into the bulk of their body, as well as an inner compass built into their head. Fleeing the Creator, they now enjoying charting the wilds, and experiment with cooking with new ingredients they find along the way. Fearing that the Creator will find out their whereabouts, Timjem signed joined the Spelljammer academy to hopefully rid himself of the Creator for good.
The Role: They have a penchant for cartography and navigation, but loves to cook. So most likely would fall into some type of ship support role.
The Experience: Have played DnD for about 10 years now, actively playing in a in person 5e game as well as an in person Pathfinder game. Have played a few pbp games in the past, so pretty familiar with this format as well.
Concept: Thri-Kreen who is good with her digits. She was kicked from school to school, and guild to guild lacking patience for scholarly study. It was also rumored that she ate one of her classmates.
The Role: Ships Red Shirt Security.
Experience: A lot of experience with D&D (from 1e) and other various RPGs.

"............anybody got any potatoes? We could drop a potato in each hole an' see which ones get viciously mauled by horrible monsters?"
Concept: They are a Githyanki ranger who trained under a lesser known commander. They were trained to fight beside dragons (future Drakewarden). They and most who trained with them thought that they were being trained to fight for their greater leadership, but on a very crucial mission they discovered that they were being trained to rebel against it. The mission went awry and most in the group were scattered to different planes. This individual landed in the Material Plane, and now seeks to return to the Astral Sea to learn more of the plans of they former commander.
Role: They are a trained navigator and deckhand.
Experience: I have been playing for a few years and in that time have played numerous RPGs.
Concept: Human artificer fashioned after Mathew Quigley (Movie “Quigley Down Under”) leaning more towards the sharpshooting things far away rather than the more normal blowing things up with his artificing skills. Can he blow things up in a pinch? Yes, but to him it take no finesse or skill to blow something up, unlike hitting something at 2 to 3 times the distance of a longbow shot (eventually as he progresses through the artificer levels)….
Role: Primarily scouting and ranged combat, alternate roles of magical and “engineering” support…. He can heal people and fix their gear.
Experience: Played 2nd Ed 20 **cough** something years ago, got back into DND due to the Pandemic, and decided to stick around
This sounds like a really fun time, would love to join if you have space (heheh)!
Concept: I'm thinking of running an Eladrin Lore Bard with a Warlock dip at some point. He used to be a Court Historian for an Archfey in the Feywilds, though his job really amounted to keeping them entertained with stories and witticisms. He has no direct family left, and considered his patron to be his kin until he accidentally overheard them speaking with someone behind closed doors about something scandalous (even by Feywild standards). Rather than raise suspicions by killing him, his patron banished him and took the time to tarnish his reputation as well. He found himself in Faerun, jobless, homeless and with no life experience outside what he has read in books. Eventually he may go back to the Feywilds to try and clear his name, but for now he's enjoying his newfound freedom. The thought of seeing entire new worlds appeals to his Fey-like wanderlust.
Role: In game, the ships Xenobiologist/Science/Magic Officer, meant to have the answers if the crew runs into something new. His Meta roll will be a combination of skill monkey, Support/Healing with a smidge of damage thrown in via the Warlock dip. He's not meant to do the most damage, but he's meant to widen the gap between the enemy and the party by dealing damage and boosting his allies in the same turn.
Experience: I've been playing 5e for about 6 years now, give or take. Currently running a campaign for my family every other weekend, and I have been playing in a couple of Discord based PbP games until recently (the DM is burning out, cross your fingers for me that he doesn't quit altogether). Even if those games continue though, I have plenty of bandwidth for the requested post frequency, and will honestly probably post more often than that. I work from home so it's easy for me to sneak some writing in on the side.
We could fill an entire fleet of spelljammers with the great applications here, if only the academy had enough instructors to go around. I'll be going over all of them over the next couple of days and be in touch! Thank you all so much for your interest!
Whew, that was tough; in the end I've put together two whole groups, and could easily have made a third or even fourth if my mental capacity could have handled that! Those that have been accepted have been PM'd. Some of these were impossible to choose between; it really came down to rolling some dice even with twelve spots, so to those who have missed out: I'm sorry, it certainly was not for a lack of great, imaginative and super fun sounding characters, and I hope I get a chance to play with all you you some time!
Thank you all again for your interest, and may all your rolls be nat 20s.
Monk … but he is quite a dextrous fellow, so being in control of the ship is something he would be interested in.
My apologies, I should have noted: one restriction the rules have is that the pilot role requires a spellcaster, in order to attune to the helm of the ship. (It's a little unclear whether a Way of Shadow Monk's Shadow Arts counts or not, but we'll need a pilot before 3rd level in any case)
Also, everyone so far has gone for existing races, probably because the official list of new races wasn't out yet. So for reference, here's the new race options:
Astral elf, an elf denizen of the Astral Plane who is possibly hundreds of years old
Autognome, a mechanical gnome who has free will
Giff, a hippo-headed being of impressive size
Hadozee, a simian being who adapts well to the hazards of Wildspace
Plasmoid, an amoeba-like person
Thri-kreen, a telepathic, insectile being
Recruiting is still open for another… 55 or so hours, I look forward to more applicants making my choice even harder!

1. Gregor Malimar, the son of a farmer, grew up tending the fields and herding the livestock. Throughout his childhood he knew very little about the world, but this lack of knowledge only built a craving for it. Gregor lived a quiet life with his mother and father until he was old enough to strike out on his own. Some people saw him as a naive farm boy, but he was always skilled at seeing through to peoples true intentions. In his travels Gregor found work investigating various small matters he would find on job boards or hear about in the taverns. Though he never went looking for trouble, trouble seemed to find him from time to time. His growing curiosity led him to many different places including places he never intended to go in the first place. Gregor overheard some men talking about the academy in a pub one day and thought, “That sounds fascinating! This might be just what I have been looking for…”
2. Gregor is a very inquisitive kind of person. He doesn’t believe he would be the best choice for a command position, but that’s not for him to decide.
3. I have been interested in D&D for about 10 years, and back then I was able to play in a few one shots. I’ve only played in a committed campaign once. Unfortunately, that group fell apart and so we didn’t make it very far. I am currently running WBtW in an IRL setting, so I do have a descent understanding of the rules and mechanics of the game.
I would like to say that I appreciate your consideration and would very much like to join. I have been interested in the Spell Jammer setting since it came out, but have not had the opportunity to dive in. I’ve been looking for a game to join for a while not, but have been passed over unfortunately. Below I have a link to the character I plan to play if selected. Stats are standard array, but are not set in stone.
This sounds interesting. Let me apply for your game.
