The sphinx turns to Rashaken immediately, closing the distance between you with only two strides. Up close she is even more terrifying - her eyes glow red, and her hair is long and dark, framing a face of pure fury.
"How dare you greet me like that," she hisses through sharp, feline teeth. "As if we were friends! You two legged folk are nothing but trouble and I should just kill you on the spot."
She shoots a sharp glance at the group before her, causing her scowl to deepen. "Lowly travellers? Maybe you and those two are," she waves a paw in the direction of Khaddim and Yurime, (who I assume is wearing her inconspicuous coat). "But I also see before me a warrior of El Dsri, a member of the queen's armies, a slave important enough to be freed, and what I assume to be a member of Altharwa nobility, no less! You dare lie to a sphinx? Do you wish to meet Anubis early?"
I returned the gaze through sheer force of will. I found it difficult to do as the sphinx' imposing visage threatened to turn my legs to wax. I would need to weigh my words carefully.
'Aye, you could.'I replied to her murder threat. 'But that would leave you bereft of the answer as to why we seek permission to enter the pyramid.'
I tried to play to the sphinx' catlike curiosity. The question was just how much cat was there and how much human and how much... other.
The Sphinx listens to both Rashaken and three, narrowing her eyes at both.
"Flattery will get you nowhere," she says to Three, although you get the feeling that she doesn't really mean it. "And you are indeed incorrect. I haven't chosen this pyramid as my domain, what a ghastly idea! I can do way better. No, I'm guarding this pyramid because there is something of my own inside of it."
She turns back to Rashaken, tilting her head. "Why do you seek to enter the pyramid?"

Khaddim looks at Gnash and wispers to him "Weren't we sent here because there were sightings of sphinxes attacking citizens without notice? Shouldn't we be asking about that instead of trying to enter the pyramid?" asked trying to not bring the attention of the sphinx to the rest of the group.
Three, still kneeling down, pushes his leg out from under him to kick Rashaken in the shin to knock him into a kneeling position. He then stands up in front of the group as if a representative of the group. Three says to the Sphinx: ""What I speak is not flattery, but true statements worded in a manner that others deem complimentary. You learn that after years of service to the queen. Either way. If you would allow us entry to the pyramid, we would gladly retrieve what you own, or leave it alone respectively. Whichever you wish." Three bows as he says that last sentence.

Seria didn't kneel down to the sphinx, the most she did was dip her head in respect. She never kneeled to anyone, and that meant no one.
She stepped in before Rashaken could respond. "We seek answers. Some of which you might be able to give us, if you would so kindly share some of your vast knowledge."That wasn't technically flattery, that was merely the what all the stories she had listened to till this day had described the majestic creature that stood in front of her.

(She's been wearing it since she bought it.)
"That's what everyone assumes" she replied to the sphinx, choosing her words carefully. "The queen sent all of us to investigate what is going on with why you sphinxes like you keep attacking innocent people when they get close to you. We have no intentions on causing further problems let alone a useless fight, but rather, we insist on resolving it before it gets worse. If you're going to remain hostile to everyone including those that are willing to help fix this neither of us will make any progress!"

The sphinx considers everyones words, and slowly, ever so slowly, her guarded expression relaxes into a sadder one.
"Very well, I will give you the answers you seek," she sighs, lowering herself into a sitting position. "My people have been attacking bipedals on my behalf, because of what those monsters did to one of our own: Deshret, daughter of day."
She looks back wistfully at the pyramid. "Some evil bipedal took her while I was out hunting and hid her here. I came home only to find my beloved cub was gone, stolen by a thief who had left their coat at my lair. It is only through my keen sense of smell and sharp eyes that I was able to track Deshret to this pyramid, where she is trapped, for I am too large to go in."
She turns back to Three, a terrifying intensity in her eyes. "If you would retrieve her for me, I swear to you, the sphinxes will be your allies for life."

"I am Maat, both mother and murderer," she replies, rolling her eyes at the second title. "And I'm afraid I can't tell you much about that villain, they dosed their coat in perfume before leaving it in my lair, which I think they did just to taunt me."

Gnash leans over to the Half-Orc and says in return, "that is true, I am unsure what Rashaken is attempting to gain with that request but it may be best to have trust in him and let it play out." Just as he says this Three inserts himself in and redirects the conversation. "Or not... it appears our Tiefling friend has once again taken the reins."
The paladin listens attentively to the conversation and does give a slight bow to the creature in acknowledgement. However, he suppresses a growl when Three kicks Rashaken forcing him down, an anger growing inside him at the display. Paying due respect was something a person chose to give, forcing them to do it removed any value in the act itself. He had seen others treat slaves similarly in the past and it was always as cruel as it was meaningless. Still, at least they had a path forward to possibly ending these attacks.
Three turns towards the rest of the group. "Do you all want to accept Maat's request?"
Inside her head:I wouldn't mind accepting a desperate sphinx's request, but a meanie like you isn't worth me pouring my centuries-old heart for!
Yuri nods at Three, keeping her thoughts of him inside her head. "We promise to find her safe and sound. We never go back on our word." She smiles gives a courtesy to Maat before going over to help Rashaken on his feet after she saw Three kicking down the fragile druid. Obviously she's disgusted by the latter's lack of courtesy towards him, especially when considering his fragility.

If I hadn't done what I did, it is very well possible that Maat would have eaten you, and possibly the rest of us too."
Maat grins as you accept her request, revealing razor sharp teeth.
"Thank you," she says, deep gratitude echoing in her voice. "Once Deshret is safe, the citizens of your city will be as well."
She then opens her great red and gold wings and flies off, only to return a moment later with a coat. It has a fur trim and is blue, and it looks to be the same make as Yurime's.
"In case you wanted to look over the thief's garment," she says, dumping it unceremoniously on the ground. "Otherwise, you had best get started. I will be waiting."
With those final words, she takes off again, and lands on top of the pyramid, watching you from there.

I regarded the coat with a curious gaze. Fur trimming for a desert garment made little sense considering the heat most of the time. It being coloured blue also struck a peculiar accord. Dye was expensive to my knowledge and with a coat, something that would always feel the wear and tear of time the most, most people would not bother colouring it anything fancy, my own green cloak presently excluded of course. The design was similar to the one miss Yurime wore. All in all it made me believe the garment did not originate from anywhere near but rather from beyond the borders of our fair kingdom.
'Crude machinations but they bear results. Miss Yurime, do you recognise the design?'
