Yes the monsters, arena, weather, ect will change to give your opponents every advantage. As you progress through the rounds more and more will be stacked against you.
Born the youngest daughter of an up-and-coming merchant family, and a half-elven bastard to boot, Aino Tanssija reveled in the benign neglect afforded her by her own kin. Always a good student and a bookworm, Aino nevertheless gravitated towards the undesirables in town - urchins, thieves, beggars.
Adventurers.
At a young age, she found a tutor for her growing magical talents in a retired recluse deep in the high forest. An old hermit who taught her the way of both arcane magic and the ancient elven art of bladesinging. Aino dove into his teachings, heart and soul, practicing the forms hour after hour, day and night. but her restlessness remained unabated.
When she heard of the tournament at the great arena, she would not be denied. Her family was horrified, of course, but since when had she ever cared about their wishes. Her bladesinging master said nothing when Aino asked him whether she was ready. The answer was clear from his stern gaze.
Goldblooded if you want to join offer is still open to you.
Dan: Good Evening my Lord's and Ladies. I'm Dam the Man, Hero of the Empire, King of the Wastes, Surviver of 1000 Battles and YOUR MC for this year's TOTAL PARTY KILLLLLLLLLL.
I'm here with my Co host, The One, the Only, that crazy Barbarian and only Creature to conquer the TPK arena not once, not twice but THREE TIMESS. You know him, you love him itssss Garmuk.
Garmuk: HI glad be here.
Dan: As we kick things off just wanted to let you know a change to our normal contest. This year we have a new rule where participants where not able to pick which party they are in and are Randomly selected on arrival. Now I'm a team player but I know this can make things a bit challenging. Isn't that right Garmuk.
Garmuk: Ya.... Hard if not good team.
Dam: I could have not have said it better my self. Well let's cut the banter and get to the action. Looks like this year's first round is Orc and 2 Goblins. Any advice for our contestants Garmuk?
Garmuk: Kill them before they kill you.....
Dan: Those are some words to live by. Let's go to the action......
You all arrive to the arena in the morning and join the thong of creatures here to complete. After standing in line for hours your given directions to your holding cell. You are directed to prepare your up next against an Orc and 2 Goblin standard conditions and Area.
You all are thrust into the room and left alone. There is a man with an Orb.
Reporter: Hello this is Bob with group 42. They have just entered the cell and are preparing for the first fight.
He turns to you all.
Reporter: Please introduce yourselves for the crowd so everyone may know who is a out to die. HAHAHA.
DM: Please make any preparations you want going into the first round, RP an introduction if you want. Thought I'd add a popularity score that will slightly affect your rewards after each fight i.e. more gold to buy things.
And please roll Initiative. I'll kick off the fight once the Initiatives are in.
(OOC: Hope it's ok to roll on character sheet - visible in campaign log. DDB forum roller has been very wonky for me lately.)
Aino initiative: 11
Sitting cross-legged, Aino Tanssija casually turns the pages of her small spell book, exuding a calmness she does not feel. Excitement, not fear.
Her pulse quickens further as she hears the bombastic MC Dan begin his speech along with the thrice champion, Garmuk. Putting the book away in a small satchel, she stands and stretches like a cat. A slender waif of a young woman, looking to be in her early twenties, though her obvious half-elven ancestry probably puts her at a bit older than that. A longbow hangs behind her shoulder and various finesse weapons adorn her hip. She flips her dirty blond braid behind her shoulder and her brown eyes sparkle with anticipation as she glances around at her new companions with a bright smile and graceful stance. Her snowy owl familiar sits atop her shoulder, eyes dawning like two moons as they take in the arena and everything inside it.
"I am Aino Tanssija. Trained in the High Forest by the headwaters of the Dessarin. Honor to meet you all. May our blades sing today."
A tall muscular female goliath sits in the corner, sharpening her greataxe. Shrick, shrick, shrick is the sound of the stone on metal as she caresses the blade with the stone over and over.
"I am Kileprat, I am from the crowder mountain, and I only know how to fight one way, with steel and Fury. I do not know any of the ways of magic, so if any of you do, please feel free to stand back and use it while I take the fight to the heart of our opponents. You protect me, ill protect you. Remember, Show no mercy"... shrink, shrick.."

Aino's owl blinks slowly at the goliath with the greataxe and the half-elf herself gives Kileprat a lopsided grin.
"We are going to get along just fine, I think! I do have magic, though as we advance, you may find me fighting by your side with steel at times as well. More form and less fury for me. And Thumbtack here," (glancing at her owl familiar) "can distract the enemy to aid our strikes."
She takes up position 10' behind Kileprat. "Eyes open. Honestly, two goblins and an orc sounds too easy. Perhaps there are other tricks afoot."
OOC: @Nontyper - while we wait, just checking something to make sure we play clean. Is Kileprat going to be wielding her greataxe in battle? If so, wanted to make sure you unequip your shield since the greataxe is 2-handed - unless she has some way of wielding 2-handed weapons in one hand?
OOC: Also - curious why chain mail instead of scale mail? Barbarians aren't proficient in heavy armor so you get disadvantage on ALL skill checks involving STR and DEX wearing chain mail. Whereas with scale mail, which is medium armor, so Kileprat is proficient, you only get disadvantage on Stealth. And your AC would be the same - 16 for heavy armor chain mail and 16 (14 + 2 from DEX) for medium armor scale mail. Cheaper too.

I guess because I'm still learning.. lol. But if I'm not using the greataxe, I should probably use the 2 hand axes and get 2 attacks, right? If I have to lose the shield, then that works better because in a rage, I would get my bonus with both hands.
All good. Honestly, I feel like I know 5e pretty well but as you've mentioned to me before elsewhere, I often learn something I didn't know before! In fact, I think I need to check Aino's known spells for a minute to make sure I did not give her too many.
Your call on the 2 handaxes for Kileprat. If you go that route, then yes after you rage, you get the +2 damage bonus from Rage on both your main hand and your bonus action off-hand attack. BUT: you only get your STR damage modifier of +5 on your main hand attack with your action, NOT on your bonus action off-hand attack. So your main hand attack (if it hits) would do 1d6+7 damage (+5 from STR and +2 from Rage) and your off-hand bonus action attack for two-weapon fighting would do 1d6+2 (just +2 from Rage) if it hits. AND keep in mind that the 2nd attack does chew up your bonus action. So for example, the act of Raging itself takes a bonus action. So on the turn you Rage, by rule you could not do your off-hand attack!
Alternatively, if you want a 2-handed weapon, I might go with a greatsword or maul which get 2d6 damage dice (average 7) instead of the 1d12 damage die (average 6.5) for the greataxe. Or with your Rage and STR damage bonus (combined +7), that's 2d6+7 (average 14) instead of 1d12+7 (average 13.5). Of course, if have a turn where you don't get close enough for melee, you could always hold your 2-handed weapon in your off hand and throw your handaxe with your action for 1d6+7 damage if it hits.
There's a whole separate avenue for a melee fighter where you use a 2-handed glaive or halberd which have a 10' reach. Only 1d10+7 (average 12.5) damage with STR and Rage bonuses, BUT, if at level 4, you take the polearm master feat, it gives you a bonus action attack which is 1d4+7 (lets you keep both STR and Rage bonuses). And, it gives you an opportunity attack whenever an enemy enters your 10' reach (not just when they leave it). And then you get into other feats such as the great weapon master feat which can really boost your damage with any of the above 2-handed weapons.
And of course, there is the single 1-handed route weapon where you keep the shield for your 18 AC for defense. And just use a 1d8 weapon like a longsword, battleaxe, warhammer etc.
Grock takes a sip from his water skin, filled with his potato moonshine, (that he ferments in his basement), listening to the introductions with excitement and nervous energy
Grock hastily let’s his teammates know his name “Eh ladies…Grock ere, I be lookin ferward ta sharin da arena wit ya both” Grock lifts up his flask and toasts them having another drink
Grock day dreams of taking on a Orge or dire bear, something he can test his prowess against, then he hears what his opponents are
Looking at his battle partners he thinks “Two goblins and an Orc?!?That big lady could handle all three herself buy the looks of it, even that frail elf could get the job done if she is handy with a blade”
Feeling dissatisfied buy his first round opponents and the lack of a proper challenge Grock nonchalantly draws his great axe and gets in position beside Kileprat
“Ye may be right little one, dey may be ‘avin some wee tricks fer us, but ye best stand behind us” Grock looks at Aino
OOC: Ok, apologies in advance for being that person after already bringing up something to @Nontyper. But, @Pugilist_Ash, I noticed that Grock has Plate Mail Armor. That's worth 1,500 gold pieces. Usually not starting level 1 equipment (usually starting heavy armor for martial classes is Chain Mail). It's @Bushawk's call of course as DM - what are the guidelines in terms of starting equipment and gold value? Can we start with any equipment we want, regardless of cost? I want us to kick butt - I really do! But I thought we'd need to buy or earn our better gear after winning battles?
