“I agree with Maribel, we shouldn’t just shove random discs in place. For one we don’t have enough of them, and two we have no idea what’s this thing does. What if it’s trapped if we don’t do it right? What if it opens that door and releases something that we can’t handle? I think we need to learn more about this place before doing anything” says Gavin as he is backing away from the stone area.
“Also, what are we to do with the walrus-men? I agree with Kathra that we should not kill unconscious beings, Tempus believes in glorious battles, not murdering people in their sleep. They may be the ones that attacked the travelers, so I don’t want to fight all of them if they wake up looking for trouble. We have enough rope to tie them up, but I am open to other suggestions.”
Gavin then goes back to the bodies and re-dresses the one he inspected(no one wants to wake up naked when all your friends are dressed!), and looks at their tusks once more to see if any of the symbols match the discs.
You don't find any trace of marks that the walrus-folk...or any other creature would have made on either the black ice, the sole disk already slotted in the wall, or any of the empty disk slots as well. you do notice, as you come closer to the icy puzzle, that there is a strange, soft humming noise coming from it.

"What was it that witch in town said? These are phases of the moon." Kathra gestures at the symbols. "So we need to complete the phases of the moon in order. Except..." she frowns, "I don't remember which way the phases are written. My tribe really never wrote them down."
((She tries to remember anyway with a... nature check, I guess?))
If it's anything like how your tribe marked the passing of the moon's phases, the disk on the wall would represent the half-moon leading up towards the full moon.

Kathra spends some more time looking at the slots again before she speaks again. "Place the one dot to the right. The three dot to the left. The four to the left of the three dot. That's the proper phase, I think." She frowns again. "We're going to need more discs."
The room you are in is of medium size, perhaps 30 feet long and 30 feet wide. The walls and ceiling are made of the same sparkly white stone as the rest of this facility. About 10 feet into the room, a small set of stairs rise about five feet to a higher landing that covers the rest of the room. The floor of this landing is a tiled mosaic. In the center of the landing is a dark stone altar table. On the far wall behind the table, a block of black ice that radiates a slight dry mist along its edges is set into white stone at about chest height. The black ice has small gems embedded in it that glitter and sparkle, seemingly of their own volition. Around the rectangular black ice are eight disk-shaped notches in the wall. The bottom middle notch has a familiar looking metal disk lodged in it already. On the eastern wall, near the base of the stairs, there is an odd deformation in the wall that Peren is currently inspecting.
Other than what was described, there doesn't appear to be an other doorways in or out of this room other than the walkway you entered from.
For Gavin:
The altar is littered with papers covered in circular writing penned in a silvery ink and involves lots of constellations.

There's not much more on the altar itself other than the curious papers. The altar however, seems to be of a glassy, reflective black volcanic stone, possibly obsidian. Along the thick legs, many silver inlay-ed constellation designs featuring animals and such work their way up and down the stone. Each corner of the table seems to feature an oval-shaped, tusked humanoid figure wearing robes, each wearing a different crown of star designs.

They appear to be star charts of some kind. Some constellations to recognize, others you don't. They may hold some sort of arcane or religious importance.

The room and the stone altar obviously have religious significance of some kind, though it is not any religion that you are familiar with. The papers on the altar appear to be carefully mapped star charts that would aid a person in either navigation or divination magics.
((Statistically, someone using these charts in conjunction with a divination spell would either get better information, get advantage on a roll associated with that spell, or be able to impose disadvantage on a save of someone trying to resist having something about them being divined. If someone were to use these charts while navigating somewhere, they would get advantage on their Survival roll.))

((Just for the sake of reference, here are the three discs we have))
((Here's where they need to go))
“Should we see if we can remove the one that’s already inserted Maribel? Maybe this isn’t the only thing they fit into”
"Should anyone see if this thing maybe did the sleepy thing to the walruses? Maybe they messed with it?"
I look for paw marks...

After Gavin is done with redressing the walrus he says “So no tying them up then?”
He walks back into the room not really waiting for an answer, and walks up the stairs to the altar to get a closer look at it.
((Can I get a quick description of the room again that we are in and doorways in and out))
((Sure.))

“Hey Maribel, you should come look at these papers. Might be a clue to figure out the disc puzzle”
((When Maribel comes up, I cast guidance to help with the eventual investigation))
((I will look around and under the papers/altar while waiting for Mirabel, Investigation: 11

Sorry had to go out of town this morning will catch up later this afternoon
((It's cool. As far as I know, Peren is still trying to figure out why the secret door he found won't open.))
((Pretend that Mirabel is suggesting 3 dots in 5, 1 dot in 3, and 4 dots in 6. Probably. But he's saying it all in character))
Mirabel turns his attention to the papers. "What have we here?"
Investigation: 20 plus 1 from Guidance.
