Kathra is not particularly worried about making more money, so she stays quiet. She does choose that moment to begin idly sharpening her great axe though, in a manner which someone might call threatening.
At Thont's question, the old man looks a bit wistful. "This town has been in the stewardship of my family dating back almost to its founding. I came into the Eldership decades ago at my father's passing, as did he and so on. There was a time when this town was known for its rich gem mine and stone quarry, but by my time as a young lad, that had noticeably begun to diminish. Back when I was still full of the vigor of youth, I struck out to the elven lands of Cornmanthor to seek a new avenue of fortune. There I learned mysteries of the stonefruit, and brought it back with me to see how it grew in our rugged soil. And that, as they say, is history."
Elder Merrik sits back in his chair, fingers clasped in front on him on the desk in a deliberative pose at Gavin's request for more financial assistance. "Oh, of course we would be glad to host you fine adventurers while you work to rid our mountain of whatever plagues it." Looking over to Grassly, he begins listing off instructions. "Go send word to The Davy Lamp to prepare a few rooms for the night. Then, let Helpington know that our guests will be stopping by tomorrow to gather what supplies they may need for their journey through the Storm Horn."
Grassly leaves the room and, from the library window, you can see him exit the front of the house and head down the main road. Elder Merrik smiles. "Would there be anything else, or will you begin seeing to you investigations?"
For Thont:
Thinking back, you can't really remember seeing many, if any non-humans. Obviously there were some, because the town is now missing two halflings, and you never met Sister Aria before she died, nor have you crossed paths with Nana Ironeye, the Sherrif, or Helpington. But you certainly don't remember seeing any elves wandering the streets since you arrived.
Gavin thanks Elder Merric and Grassly for their hospitality and for the room and board agreement. “I appreciate the information, but before we set out to go up the mountain, we need have a few more people I would like to speak to, and we need supplies for the trek. I believe gathering information would be prudent before blindly going up the mountain.”
((I would like to speak with the Sherrif, Nana, Armond and a maybe a quick once over of the townsfolk to see if any other info pops up before retiring for the night. I think looking at the quarry might be a good idea as well...thoughts from anyone else? If no one objects I would like to go see Nana first since I have knowledge in medicine from my time looking after the injured as a mercenary. Not sure if we want to split up or just all go together.))
"It is best that we were on our way, yes. I would like to speak with this witch of yours. Perhaps she can see something about this coin that we cannot." Kathra isn't looking directly at Mirabel when she says this, but she's definitely talking about Mirabel when she says this. "I would like to see the body as well. Perhaps he had something on him to indicate what he found on the mountain."
Mirabel shoots a glance at Kathra that says something like "Ouch, why'd you have to go there" before nodding his agreement. "Lead on, let's get this information gathering started!"
((Alright, sounds like we're all in on visiting the local witch, Nana Ironeye, so let's move this thing along.))
You are shown out the back of the manor by your host to a simple dirt path that stretches north westerly into a small wooded area. Following it for just a few minutes sees your group entering a small clearing with a simple cottage surrounded by an old stone wall, barely waist high, and flanked by gardens growing an assortment of various herbs and flowers. A small walkway leads from an old weathered wooded gate to the front door.
As you reach the door and prepare to knock, you hear a crone's voice interrupt from within the structure. "It's open, just come in already!" With a shrug, you open the door and enter into the witch's domain. It is a quaint little place with a large open area in the center surrounded by worktables and shelves covered with herbs and bottles of various liquids. From the ceiling hangs almost innumerable charms and woven knickknacks. To one side a small bed hides in the corner of the room, neatly made. To another, a fireplace crackles and pops, spreading warmth throughout the house. Along the back wall, a short gnomish figure standing on a small stool finishes draping an old cloth over what looks like the shape of a body before turning to greet you with her one good eye. "Ah yes, you must be those adventurers the town's been all atwitter about. Come to get a fortune told before facing the beast what done in young Tommin?"

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"We were hoping for other information that was not fortunetelling." Kathra says, frowning. "This Tommin - was there anything on his person to indicate what he'd seen on the mountain before the beast got him?" There's a brief pause before she adds. "Also, do you have any opinion as to what manner of beast got him?" She watches the witch carefully to ensure nothing is being held back.

((Well, it was nice to have good rolls while it lasted))
"His body itself was proof enough of bedevilry, I'd think." Nana Ironeye says, clutching a small basket from the work table as she steps off the stool, moves toward a fireside chair and beckons the party closer. As she reaches inside her wicker trove, you hear the soft clinking of crystal. Drawing her hand from the basket, you see that she holds a bit of some quartz-like substance that reflects the light of the fire into a myriad of rainbows across the room. "Found this growing from the wounds, I did. 'Tis an odd substance not familiar to this world."
For Kathra:
This old gnome's ways are a bit strange to you, but you sense no deceptions.
Is the witch human? (Thont is curious - partly for his own interest in communities that have ancient problems and whether those are relative to the lifespans of those involved, and partly because he's trying to figure out exactly how mystical the issues at hand may be.)
Thont asks,
"Do you feel the beast itself is likely not from this world as well?"
"Is this the oddest thing to happen here in an age, or are there old wonders and worries?"
Looking up to fix her good eye on Thont, Nana Ironeye replies, "I'd reckon such be true. I've lived here most my long life an' I know of no wizard or other with power to match and desire to destroy kind temples in quiet, hill-country towns."
((For those wanting to examine the crystal, you'll need to make an Arcana roll if you are proficient in it, otherwise, a Perception roll will be required.))

"The mongoose blew out its candle and was asleep in bed before the room went dark." —Llanowar fable
Looking closer at the strange crystal, you instantly recognize what it is. The substance is not actually rock in the traditional sense, but a physical manifestation of the Astral Sea itself. Looking deeper into the shard, you see stars and galaxies as if you were looking through glass into the night sky itself. Even stranger, the stars seem fixed in their locations, so that as you move the crystal, the image moves with it to reveal new astral bodies.
Gavin asks if he can examine the body as he knows nothing of arcana or crystals. With his time as a mercenary, he has seen his share of wounds.”If I may, do you mind if I inspect the body Nana? I’m curious to what caused his wounds, if they were steel or more beastly caused gashes. Your thoughts would be appreciated as well.l
She points to the body on the table shrouded in cloth. "You're free to have a peek, boy. But you won't find wounds of steel or claw." As you walk over and pull back the cloth, you see what she means. On the table lies a halfling male, badly bruised and broken as one would expect of a death by building collapse. The oddity however, is that the gashes from the shrapnel on his arm seem to have crystallized over with the strange rock that Mirabel is examining with some interest.
For the check:
Poking and prodding here and there, you're sure this man died of mostly building shrapnel and concussive force from an explosion.
