So, Ghurk is good as a really strong character, and Rain is a goof mix of stealth and fighting. Saralyn adds good unique magic to the team with her soul powers. We could probably use a magic user of some sort, or maybe two since Saralyn doesn't seem to do that much magic other than soul control. If we would add another fighter, maybe something like a Paladin or Blood Hunter to add uniqueness to the fighting. Those are just my thoughts. Or we could add something like a bard or cleric as that is also a unique add to the team, and they can do some magic along with other things.
(OOC: Indeed! I think that we have a good core. I wouldn't even think of adding a simple Wizard to the party if I didn't know that between Rain's mobility and Ghurk's reach, we have a pretty strong wall on the party's front line. I can't say much about Saralyn's powers since I don't think that I've seen the class description. Rain just found out that she her soul powers include healing. :-)
I was thinking that it would help round out the party if we had at least one full spellcaster (wizard, sorcerer, bard, cleric, or druid) and one (more?) character who brought some solid healing through Level 5 (cleric, druid, bard, or paladin).)
Of course, if all of you don't want to be a second it's fine. Another would just be useful, but not needed that badly.
(OOC: Of course! In fact, at the moment, I think that we're fine. But I just wanted to start thinking about it before the party is facing some monstrosity in the desert or needs to persuade some town official of something. It's early enough now that we'll have time to introduce additional characters more naturally. As I said, I'm ready to bring a sorcerer or a wizard if 87306 and Dragonlouis also agree that we should look at expanding the party, either having some two-character players or by recruiting additional players.
Updated to add:
The current skill proficiencies between Ghruk and Rain are
Athletics (both), +4/+5
Insight*, +4
Intimidation, +3
Investigation*, +2
Nature*, +2
Perception* (both), +2/+4
Stealth, +6
Survival* (both), +2/+4
* = If the checks are related to his preferred (desert) terrain, Rain's proficiency bonus is doubled, so he gets an additional +2.
Not sure about Saralyn until 87306 mocks up a character sheet.
I think that coverage in persuasion, deception, arcana, and history could be helpful. My (tiefling) sorcerer build would cover arcana, persuasion, and deception. My (elven) wizard build would cover arcana, history, and religion.
So far, everyone has Darkvision. Rain has a climbing speed. Ghurk has extra Reach.)
Rolan sets down the disc, then pulls off the cloth. The disc is made of white crystal with ornate eyelike designs. "You get 6 seconds, Raiden. And then you leave." Rolan says firmly. Raiden puts his hand over the disc and it begins to ripple. After 6 seconds, Rolan pulls Raidens hand off the disc. "Very well, I see it." Raiden stands up. "Then I'm done here. Have a nice life of lies, Rolan." Rolan stands up and opens the door, which opens straight to the throne room.
Rain asks, not quietly, "Rolan, isn't this the man who fought past the guards and attacked you? You're just going to let him walk free?"
(OOC: OK. I misunderstood. I thought that Rolan was just opening the door and letting Raiden walk out of the castle.)
Rain's attention is now fixated on the disc, his eyes alight with curiosity. "How does this pearly disc work? Can I wave my hand over it? What would happen?", Rain asks, starting to reach out his hand.
"You would see visions of things, of fate." He stares at Rain for a moment before continuing. "Maybe in the morning, after some rest, we could let you three use it, and see if you see anything important. But really, you need sleep now."
"You would see visions of things, of fate." He stares at Rain for a moment before continuing. "Maybe in the morning, after some rest, we could let you three use it, and see if you see anything important. But really, you need sleep now."
Rain looks a little disappointed but says, "True. It has been a long day. Someone will come get us in the morning?" His eyes linger on the disc before it is covered back up. He takes one last look around this dungeon, looking for anything that may tell him more about this strange castle and its enemies (Perception22)
"Oh, and before we sleep, will someone come and take the guard from my room to see the king? Or at least take him to a healer?"
After that, Rain lets them escort him (or send him) back to his room to find Saralyn and Ghurk, unless something else has happened to them in the meantime.
I'm going to start shouting for help, yelling that there are goblins about.
Rain uses feline agility (movement doubles for one turn) to sprint past Rolan on the way back to the rooms. He arrives at the door, both scimitars drawn, checking the hallway and then looks into his room where he left Saralyn, Ghurk, and the guard. When Saralyn explains that the goblins are outside the castle, and Rolan says
Rolan comes upstairs. "We'll get the goblins. You need rest now." He stretches before entering his room, then enters.
Rain agrees that they need some rest for tomorrow. He waits until someone comes to escort the guard to the infirmary, and then he proposes to Ghurk and Saralyn again that they treat this location as insecure. Two attacks inside the castle in one day has him on edge. His only ideas are to either sleep in their own rooms with one of them on guard in the hall / top of the stairs, or maybe just sleep in their bedrolls on the floor in one room with one of them sitting / sleeping on the floor in front of the door.
Before they go to sleep, Rain tries to relay the events that they missed when the party was separated:
He tells Ghurk and Saralyn about everything that happened in the castle dungeon with Raiden and the white disc.
He says that Rolan may let them try it tomorrow. Rain seems eager to try it.
Rain explains that during Raiden's attack earlier, he went downstairs and tried to get into king's personal room once he was sure that there were no intruders downstairs. But he was foiled by the magic room.
Then he explains that Rolan showed him how to get to the castle dungeon through the magic room:
Open the door from the throne room.
Go through into the magic room.
Close the door behind you.
Walk to the other side and open that door. (It will show the same throne room.)
Leave that door open while you go back to the first door, and open it.
That door now seems to be a door into the magic room that they're already in.
Walk through that door and close it behind you.
Now open the door again, and it'll be the dungeon room.
He also reminds them that Saralyn sensed a death before the first goblin attack in the morning. They still don't know who or what died then. Maybe it was part of the initial attack before the goblins made it into the castle? Or maybe someone had died in the castle before the attack?
Finally, Rain tells Saralyn that she must let Ghurk and him go first into danger. His voice is friendly, but it sounds less like advice and more like an order. He simply says that they are more likely to survive a hand-to-hand fight with a group of goblins. When Raiden attacked, she went into the hall first, which was dangerous since they didn't know the threat at the time. "If someone is going to run recklessly into a fight, let it be a soldier, like Ghurk!"
Rain then listens to anything that they share about the events upstairs. He takes out the teal pearl to confirm that he still has it with him. Then he settles down to whatever sleeping arrangements the party could agree on.
Your friends and family are there around a great well. There is smoke in the air. They are having a festival. But you aren't here with them, you're in a city far away. "Please, you must come home..." One of them wishes, "He'll find you..."
Saralyn:
You are in a small home, just like any other home here. But you've never been here before. A spirit appears beside you and tries to tell you something, but then a blinding light makes it vanish. "Help me, leave the village..." you hear. "He'll find you..."
Ghurk, once he falls asleep:
You are seeing your old town of bugbears. Some of the soldiers are still alive, they hadn't died in the battle long ago. "Welcome home, our great warrior!" "You're staying for drinks, eh?" Another asks. "I hope you're staying, because, He'll find you..."
(OOC: Anything else? Or we just sleep through the night and wake up in the morning? If so, maybe let us know how the morning starts and what we are told about our upcoming outing. Then we can chat with each other and get ready for the day.)
Am I supposed to describe a dream? Ghurk dreams about a giant fluffy thing. It smells delicious. He takes a bite, discovering that the fluffy thing is delicious. He finishes it. It was delicious. He wakes up. His pillow is missing.
Read over the dreams I sent you (in spoiler boxes), you don't have to make up a dream. Sleeping was just to skip to the next day. It's morning now, nothing happened in the night other than dreaming.
It smells like breakfast now, and the sun is coming up.

(OOC: I'm going to assume that the group went with Rain's plan to sleep in one room to ensure that they weren't attacked during the night.)
Once the daylight makes it through the window, Rain gets up and quietly (Stealth11 😉) packs his bedroll back into his bag and opens the door to check the hallway to make sure the coast is clear. He has been traveling with caravans for over a year now, and he has an established routine. Within 10 minutes, he has put on his armor, scimitars (in their scabbards), dart quiver (over one shoulder), and pouch, and he has checked the rest of his gear to ensure that everything is in good repair and that nothing is missing.
If the rest of the party is still asleep, he'll quietly leave the room and check whether there's any activity downstairs. If not, he'll spend some time in the garden until others are awake.
If the other two are awake, he picks up his staff and proposes that they go down to the dining hall to see whether the kitchen has put out anything for breakfast.
Once he smells the food or the kitchen's fires, he looks off in the distance for a moment and says, "I had a dream last night. Something about...my home village, I think. I wasn't there, but I remember my parents and cousins were there. They were telling me to come home: it was like a warning. I was in danger, or...maybe someone was looking for me? Some among my people believe that the Cat Lord shares visions of the future through dreams."
(OOC: some things for when 87306 and Dragonlouis are ready to post.)
Rain is curious to see the town, but he's planning to leave his backpack at the castle. Or at least emptying most of the rations out of it before heading out into the town. It's no use carrying 60 pounds of gear to the Onyx District if they'll be coming back to the castle before leaving the town!
"Are there any other supplies that we need?" The king offered a barrel of gold yesterday. Rain doesn't really need a bunch of gold, but if they could have some of that gold up front, they could upgrade some of their gear before going to the temple. "We should ask Rolan or the King whether they have supplies for us or whether we can take some gold to busy supplies in town today."
Can anyone confirm the distance (normal 30 ft. walking speed) to the desert temple via the King's trail? Rain is trying to plan food and water for the trip. It sounds like the temple might be as much as a 2-day journey from the castle. If the trail has good wells or other water sources, they could refill their waterskins along the way. In that case, everyone should take 4 waterskins and at least 5-days of rations. If there are no water sources along the trail, each one of them will need to bring at least 2 waterskins of water for each day that they expect to travel, and that assumes that they're camping during the day and not traveling during the day when it's hot. Rain normally carries an extra day's worth of water, just in case. Therefore, a 2-day journey (there and back) would mean taking 10 waterskins of water. That wold be an extra 50 pounds to carry (each) at the start of the journey. "It's a question of distance and what we can carry. But it's no good to travel light only to die of thirst in the desert! I know ways to find water in the desert, if it's there, but foraging takes time and may slow the journey."
If they try to travel in the heat of the day, they'll go through water twice as fast. They can camp during the day and travel in the mornings and evenings. Or, since they all have darkvision, they could travel at night. If they don't want to get burned by the desert sun, they should also take a tent of some sort.
If Rolan or the King is around, Rain asks about getting a chance to use the white disc from last night.
Can someone explain the plan for the trip to the Onyx District?
What's the goal?
Is anyone going other than the party?
Is there a map of the town? Rain loves maps!
