Ween bursts into tears again and sits next to the clown to wait.
Zephram, the clown punches your ticket sadly before returning it to you. He looks at Ween, gestures at you two with his chin and gives her a look that seems to say "Wouldn't get me in there, either!"
As you both walk into the dimness of the tent foyer, you catch movement from the corner of your eye. You look more closely at the three mirrors ahead of you and instead of your own reflections looking back at you, you see yourself as a child, peering out of each mirror.
Zephram and Phaalisse, what do you see?
Zephram:
Behind you in one of the mirrors, you see a faint, almost ghostly outline of a second child who looks a lot like you, but you realise isn't you.
If either of you would like to look around for Rubin, please roll a perception check for the first minute of searching (DC=15)
I'm chilled by what I spy in the mirror, and it throws me off my task for a moment. Surely it must be an hallucination, a trick of the light or of the fairground attraction...
I pull myself together and begin looking for Ween.
I see someone I barely recognise now, a poorly formed character in the midst of being ostracised from the underdark, who hasn't yet built up the resilience to assert themself. I feel pity for them, knowing what they are yet to go through. And I'm reminded how shitty drow can be when in their natural state.
Zephram, you catch sight of Rubin out of the corner of your eye The halfling is gazing worriedly into a mirror.
A little girl in a pig mask can be seen in the pane, whispering to the halfling’s youthful reflection. As soon as she sees Zephram and Phaalisse approach, the girl turns and disappears.
Rubin turns to the two of you. "Why did you make her disappear? Are you following me?"
I step forward and say, "Ween sent us to find you. She is worried that you misunderstood her reaction when you proposed to her - she only laughed because she was under an enchantment. The carnival cast it on her, on me and on my friend here."
I'm also desperate to know who the pig girl is, but I'll have to ask when we have him outside...this place is giving me the creeps now.
Rubin shakes his head. "Really? An enchantment? Oh I was so upset. I thought I'd been reading her signals wrong and that she had played a trick on me. I shouldn't have lost faith in her. I must go back!"
Rubin dashes back out of the entrance of the Hall of Illusions, leaving the two of you standing there.
You haven't seen any sign of the displacer kitten in your search for Rubin. If you want to look around a bit more or go further into the Hall, roll another perception or investigation check. Or you can follow Rubin back out again, or suggest something else if you like.
As you walk through the Hall, you notice that the further you go from the entrance, the older your reflections become, until the final mirrors show incredibly aged versions of yourselves. Your reflection's eyes bore out of the mirror and into your own.
Phaalisse:
You don't find your lost item here. In a mirror about 1/4 of the way through, your reflection seems to be whispering to someone you can't see.
Zephram:
You see the faint shadow behind your reflection in one more mirror, the one you saw the pig mask girl in. (BTW The pig mask girl looked nothing like this shadow person)
You don't see the displacer kitten anywhere, but you do find a tiny round bell, in the dust behind one of the mirrors.
(Phaalisse can see your reaction and can see your younger reflection in the mirror, but didn't hear anything apart from you speaking to what seemed like your reflection.)
The pair of you make your way back out of the entrance, blinking in the last rays of sunset. Off to the side of the entryway, you catch sight of Ween and Rubin hugging, Ween wearing a shiny new ring on her finger. The stars in the sky seem to shine brighter, and you hear bird calls around you.
As you walk out, the ticketseller looks you over, a concerned look on his painted face. When it appears you are unharmed, he looks relieved.
Do you stay and talk to the ticketseller, or move on to another attraction?
I walk across to the ticketseller, still creeped out and a little angry, and say, "You seem surprised to see us in one piece... or perhaps people don't tend to come out of there at all? Is there anything you'd like to tell us?"
The ticketseller looks shocked. He gestures at himself and shrugs in an exaggerated way. He then points to the tent behind him and shakes his head, waving his hands as if to say "No way I'm going in there."
Ween and Rubin walk past you, hand in hand, smiling beatifically at each other. Flowers sprout and open as they walk past.
When we were searching for the kitten, and found the bell, were we also searching for secret doors or fake mirror backs, or am I going to have to go back in there?
You didn't notice any secret doors or fake backs when you were looking around in there. Nothing was out of the ordinary apart from what was in the reflections, and the little bell.

I go deeper into the hall, looking for Star, or what I lost.

I'm not liking this place, but I did make a promise to look for Star, so I press on too.

You hear in your mind, "I hope to see you soon, brother."

My blood freezes, and I shout...
"WHO ARE YOU?"
And I stand there, aghast, as the figure's words sink in, and the recurring dream I have been experiencing tilts into a new light.
