Let's make it a High Magic Campaign with double cash for 5th level - 1,500 gp, 1 uncommon & 2 common magic items to start. You use your coin to buy gear and can buy scrolls and potions (use Xanathar's for double cost of making them, since you'll have to buy them). Also, You can spend 250 gp to learn a language or a tool. Skills can not be bought this way, that is what feats, class and species/race are for.
For classes that can get expertise, even though it seems that only thieves tools are are the only type of tools you can get expertise in, I'm going to allow it if you want to do it for any tool.
I was researching animal costs and found a reasonable argument of using an animals xp award as gold piece cost, so a Mastiff is 25 gp, Wolf is 50 gp, Dire Wolf is 400 gp and Winter Wolf is 750 gp. This does change the cost of certain animals, like the Elephant, which now goes from 200 gp to 1,100 gp. Which makes way more sense, since they take longer to mature and train than other animals and cost a hell of a lot more to maintain.
As for Dynamite, going to make that a very rare item among the horde that can't be normally bought, but can be "bartered" (or stolen) from providers. Note: The "market" is going to almost completely random on what will be available and prices depending on availability. I'll probably randomly roll a couple dozen items available each day. Except for the basic needs, such as rations, booze, non-expensive clothing and simple weapons, everything else will probably have to requisitioned through the quartermaster and checked every morning and evening.
We will be using alternate rule on critical hits, additional damage will be an extra MAX damage dice added to damage. Example: a longsword would do 1d8+Str Bonus + 8 hp damage on a critical. a two handed sword would be 2d6+str bonus + 12 hp damage. I believe this actually makes critical hits better, instead of potentially rolling two 1's for damage and calling that a critical hit.
Remember : Most Perception checks use your passive score, but remember that you can always use an action to roll it! Per Jeremy Crawford - You always can use your passive perception score and you just roll your perception to see if you can score higher.
Let's use 1st level max hp and then you can roll the die for each level the in the forum chat with a default to the average hp if you don't like the total of your rolls.
This is Binder's Hold, a school started by a group of ex-adventurers on a set of crossroads. Initially it was just a few students, and the group was content with that. The discovery of iron and tourmaline in the area led to the group increasing its wealth by selling shares to a mining company, which in turn drew an ever increasing population of service and support providers. Binder's Hold eventually grew into a small university town specializing in the teaching of esoteric knowledge.
Unfortunately for this population center has been recently pillage and turned into a base of operations for the Arch-Lich Magolynn's Raiders as he attempts to increase the size of his new empire. Magolynn, through fear and rewards, has wrested together many tribes of goblinoids, humanoids and scaled folk into a tremendous army rampaging across the land.
This is where your party comes in. You have managed to avoid the culling of the weak, year after year, as you've worked your way up among the raiders and recently been banded together as a group under the harsh rule the bugbear Sidney Glanmint. Your commander has been called away to lead another campaign in Magolynn's ever avaricious need for conquest. Your party enters the newly conquered town, shortly before the witching hour during a moonless night and are greeted by a man named Hektor, in front of the town hall.
"Oye! You there! Are you the fresh meat sent by that cur Glanmint? Let's see your orders!", he holds out his hand for the requested documents. He reads the orders you've handed over to him then responds, "Come with me, Master Agnir wishes to see you." Hektor abruptly turns about and walks up the steps (and assuming you follow), head up the steps into the hall, about to enter Agnir's reading room.
(Guile and Vanja notices Hektor has a sallow, unhealthy complexion. Roll a d20 for me. The others can roll if you inform them, now or later, either discreetly or if you don't care if Hektor hears you comment.)
Hektor pauses, turns towards Rog and comments with a grin, "Yer definitely gonna be a hoot! Move your butt, can't keep the 'good' master waiting!" He laughs as he turns back and shouts into the room, "Hey, oh perfidious one, the meat is here!" and heads right in in, kicking the door open.
"Well, everyone must be excited about something! I wonder what that's about?" Kumiko eagerly mutters to herself as she trots behind the others in a bright, pink hanbok whilst swaying her fluffy golden tail as she does so. Hmm, I wonder... she thinks. Could there be some rather handsome men in there perhaps? Judging by his manners, I should probably leave him be rather than to toy with his emotions; That poor sap out the front there is definitely not of my interest...
Inside his head (flashback): Continue to train, Son of Gawain. We will meet again.
Standing behind everyone else hailed a knight in heavy-clad armour complete with an ashen helmet obscuring his face. Though it was hard to tell just by gazing at his posture, it was clear that he had experienced some sort of flashback that motivated him to travel here to train. All because of his opponent's father. That nearly costed him his position and his life.
"I hope this is the right place." He breathes to himself in a low-pitched, almost menacing voice as he steadily paces pass Hektor whilst ignoring his rude behaviour. "I didn't travel all the way this far from Crimea for nothing."

"I'd look if there was someone who would be of my interest... in terms of an opponent worth fighting." The knight deadpans as he does his best to keep his composure whilst looking straight on at the steps. "Right now, I would prefer to save my strength and keep my distance from everyone if necessary. Seems like this place is more dangerous than I thought..."

All of a sudden, the foxgirl's fox ears twitched as she turns her back towards... Gasp! Oh my! Such a burly looking armour guy there! Though... why is his face obscured? Did he perhaps... have a bad hair day or what? She trots over near Gema and decides to engage with him... if she even can.
"Yeah come on! As... um, whatever this lady's name is, lighten up mister! There's always a possibility of something important you might be seeking around here. Or is it perhaps... are you looking for me, hmm?" She teases.
"I'm thinkin' it was Heck-and-gore, or something like that," Bridgette whispers to Rog. "But in any case, it's probably in our best interests not to attract too much attention... that's how we've survived this long. Let's go see what they want us to do, and if we don't like it... well, we have plenty of ways for dealing with that unfortunate situation."
"Whatever, lady. I'm trying my best not to attract attention right now." He growls as he walks past them up the stairs, not even bending his head to make eye contact with her.
(OOC Mister_Whisker: That was for Kumiko and Gema in case you're wondering. The reply function doesn't really make it clear)
You hear from inside the room an angered shout, "Hektor! Why have you interrupted my studies?!? If you weren't in charge of this stronghold's protection, I'd have you flogged within an inch of your unnatural existence!"
"Like you'd have the balls to try that after you lost control of me", laughs the warrior from inside. "I'm my own being now. I've brought a new group to meet you, fool." Hektor then raises his voice and calls out, "You new ones, get yer asses in here on the pronto, the 'master' wants to meet with ya!"
An angry, haggard looking human stands in the room behind a desk. This is Agnir, your new boss.
Agnir grimaces, then sighs and looks your group over, observing that you are not wearing slave collars. "Are they freemen or bonded?"
"Freemen, Agnir." responds the man. The comment deepens the scowl on Agnir's face. He then says, "Well, get them to their quarters and assign them to Reginald, I'm sure he'll find a use for them-", he then pauses suddenly, listening as an non-rhythmic clanging of a bell in the distance. His eyes widens and he exclaims, "Hektor, head to the mines and find out why the call to arms is being sounded!" the man then pauses, looking at you, "and take 'these' with you" he says with undeniable distaste.
"You heard him! Move out!" sighs Hektor. He turns on his heels and rushes out to main square. The clanging of the warning bell changes in cadence to a constant hammering. "Shit!" exclaims Hektor. He calls out to a stable, beckoning towards it, "Come forth, my minions!" Out from it shuffles about a dozen shambling bodies garbed in various bits of gear and weapons. As they approach, you catch the unmistakable odor of decay, realizing these aren't living beings. (OOC: obviously zombies.) Hektor hands out yellow pieces of silk to you and says "Put these on." He points to his own head where he is wearing a red cloth as a head band. "Obey anyone wearing a red ban and definitely obey a silver circlet wearer. Anyone wearing a grey band or a collar obeys you, anyone esle is a slave. That means right now anyone you see not wearing the gear is the enemy. Go and collect your gear and meet me here in 5 minutes!"
(OOC: This will give you time to get any pets and start any spells/powers that have durations more than a minute and that you can cast as rituals before battle.)
