"Maybe not that..."Arynn says, attempting to comfort the crying girl. "There's some bad experiences with foodstuffs, and we're one short." He attempts to give the guards a hint as to what it is without saying it aloud to the children present, then leads them into the barracks and will stay with them.
Taman can see that Arynn is dealing well with the guards and does not interfere but tries to help by distracting the children with a performance of a nursery rhyme. (Performance: 14).
When he finishes singing he smiles to them.
"Fear not, brave little soldiers. You will be back home very soon now and I promise you that you will be the town heroes and everyone will be very glad to see you."

The children begin to calm as the soldiers bring some semi-stale bread to munch on since the stew was rejected. A few minutes later a healer came in and began to check out the children in a side room and the captain comes in while they are gone. "There were three children, what happened to the other one? The mother is here and impatient to see her children but I felt it was best to keep her out until they are checked out and I hear your stories." He look at the group of you with a curious but also skeptical expression.

"We should talk elsewhere." Arynn takes the healer off to one side. He keeps a hushed tone, keeping their backs towards where the children are eating. "By the time we got there and fought through to where they were being held, they'd taken one of the kids. He's gone, they chopped him up for stew. We managed to get some of the bones, potentially one of the clergy can either lay them to rest or bring them back. I'm not a priest, I don't know how that works, but we did all we could for them."
If the healer starts to speak aloud (in response etc.) Arynn will push his hand against the healer's mouth so their conversation is kept quiet.
The captain hearing what you said indicated for the healer to continue to work on the children and indicated for the group of you to join him in a different part of the room so you could talk without being overheard. "High level holy magic like that is rare and very difficult. I doubt the mother will be able to afford that sort of work. However you may give it to her if you wish. What I need to know is what were the creatures doing and did you find who they were acting on behalf of, or was it a random attack?"

"I can have a report ready for morning, as we should also alert Lord Hightower to the event. For now though, I advise you keep your men on guard. Try not to rile them, but I believe the ringmaster of the group is a vampire, he evaded capture, and the others had a better look at him." Arynn then looks to where the children are. "They will need a lot of consoling after this event. Make sure they are cared for, please. A child should never have to go through such things."
The captain nods at your words and ushers you from the barracks. As you exit the frantic mother rushes up. "Did you find my children? Are they safe? Did the goblins harm them?" Her words came out in a rush.

Fargrim looks sadly at the poor woman, the death of the one dampening the victory of saving the other two. He says nothing, his words failing him. For a moment, the tiny weight of the bones in his bag seems infinitely heavier than the chainmail which protects him from similar fates.
Taman recognises the mother from when she beseached them for aid. He puts his hand on her shoulder and breaks the news to her as gently as he can. He spares the grizzly details and assures her that the goblin perpetrators were destroyed. He is almost overcome with sorrow and pity for her but he maintains his composure while he comforts her and gives her time to react and process the news. He then gestures towards Fargrim.
"We have the little one's bones here for you..."

The guard captain shakes his head. "He works outside the city. With all that has been going on we cannot leave. I could send a messenger in the morning. The father is a city grave digger. The cemetery is only about a half mile outside the city. But I wouldn't be able to send any of the guards."

Quietly, Fargrim confers with Taman and the rest, "A brief rest is definitely in order. I must go tend to my wounds and make sure they don't fester. Still, we must make haste."
Finally gathering the courage to approach the woman, Fargrim addresses her, "My deepest condolences, madam. By the Axe of Clangeddin Silverbeard, your child shall be avenged."
Fargrim is not the most compassionate looking fellow. I'm curious how bad he flubs this up
"It should only be a short trip." Arynn says, getting ready to leave. "I can go find him if you want to patch yourselves up." He then looks to the woman."Miss, what is your husband's name, so I may address him correctly?"
