@dm would I still be allowed to use my staff as a spellcasting focus if I got him to fashion a detachable axehead and/or mace head to turn it into a battleaxe, greataxe, or Maul? I don’t expect is be proficient with it but that’s nothing a bit of training can’t remedy as per Xanathars Guide to Everything’s downtime rules)

If I haven’t offended you, don’t worry. I’m sure I’ll get to you eventually.

Maz is hanging around kickin rocks. Armor and weapons aren’t really his speed, but the idea of performing another night in the tavern excites him. He wonders if he might be able to find another instrument around town. (Maybe an instrument of illusions 😏)

Well since it looks like your sticking around for a day at least, you can spend the day searching for 1.
Maz will happily wonder around looking for a special instrument. He would do his best to chat with other bards that may be in town. Perhaps the tavern bar tender may have some info.

I've got a DC in mind. Roll stright charisma and investigation
Unfortunately there are no bards left in town after the festival caravan packed up and pushed south. So you head over to the Bartender.
You have a great conversation and he is happy to hear your staying an extra night but fears you might be disappointed in the size of the crowd.
With an 18 charisma he is willing to pass you gossip he has herd but with a 16 he doesn't have any good leads. He is what you pick up.
Bartender: This shifty fella in here 2 caravans ago (About 2 months) kept going on a bout a flute he was after. Had some power over rats or something. He was headed north towards the city. All I remember sorry can't help you more.
Maz you are now aware of the pipes of the sewers. You will need to get more info on it before you have any hope of tracking it down

Sure
After everyone else is done Crunchface steps up to the blacksmith, presenting his staff and gesturing to one end. “Could you make axe head to put on this end?”
Smith: What you looking for? It's not quite long enough to be a halberd but it's too think to be a greataxe... Ever herd of a Danish Axe? The Danish raiders use to place the Northern lands for many years before the empire whiped em out. It's going to be like a battle axe but with a slightly longer handle.
Shouldn't be too hard I've got plenty of axe heads give me an hour. Cost ya 15 gold.
DM: discided on the Battleaxe since it didn't have the heavy property, also you don't need to RP you detach the axe head you can just say the axe is your focus. Unless you want that as an RO element for Crunchface
What do ya do next? You still have to collect your reward.
Maz meets Marleys grin with a big smirk of his own and bounces into the room.
“Oi! Hi there! Good morning! I’m Maz, and these are my adventuring friends! We were looking for the Mayor. Could you help us… uh, sorry I didn’t see your name by the door.” Maz says cheerfully with lots of energy as he fiddles with his pan flute on his hip.
Maz you walk in and start talking. There is a single desk with files and loose papers all over. When you finish you realize there is no one behind the desk.
You hear a slightly muffled voice.
Good morning Maz! My name is Clover.... Ya the Mayor does not really recognize all I do around here but I'm the glue that keeps this down running.
A mouse in a sundress walk out from under a stack of papers.
Sorry about that, the stack fell on me. My fileing system works but can be hazardous at time.
"Good," Marley agrees and accepts the 35 gold.
(He gives each party member 9 gold and keeps 8 for himself)

The Smith takes the staff and looks it over.

(The pipe of the sewers with Crunch’s bag of rats would be hilarious 😂)
Maz thanks the bartender for the chat and hangs around while the rest finish up at the smith.
Crunchface thanks the blacksmith and heads to find the others.

Marley pays the blacksmith for the studded leather and says, "Thank you, see you tomorrow!"
(Let's go get our reward!)
"That sounds like a great idea"

Yall head over to the Mayor's manor. Walking in the place seems empty. There is a room off to one side where you hear a small voice call out.
Hello I'm back here, come on back.
The sign outside the door says ASSISTANT TO THE MAYOR
Marley looks to Maz with a grin, hoping he'll take the lead as the spokesperson for the party.

She chuckles
What brings you into the mayor's office today?
(So tempted to pull out my bag of rats)
