The party heads over to the lovely Silver Song Lake.
(OOC: Rewinding a bit while we wait for Aelas to come back online, I just wanted to say that we filled in the other half of the party...)
As the party walked to the Silver Song Lake attraction, Valrieth told Finley and Gan-Re what she and Hisashi saw in the Hall of Illusions.
"When we got to the end, where our reflections were little old women, we found that halfling, Rubin. He was standing there transfixed, just staring into a mirror. The mirror didn't show his reflection but an image of a little girl wearing a pig mask. She seemed to be whispering to Rubin, but I couldn't hear what she said, could you Hisa? The mirror girl reached out her hand, and Rubin was about to take it when we arrived. The whole scene was very spooky, like straight out of a ghost story. I got between Rubin and the mirror girl, and I think...I think that she touched my back. Her touch was cold, like a winter faerie. Hisa grabbed Rubin to keep him from reaching the mirror girl, and that seemed to snap him out of it. He regained his senses, and the mirror girl vanished. I'm afraid that there may be darker things happening at the Witchlight Carnival underneath all of the fun games. I mean, aside from a Kenku who steals voices." Val seems to shiver despite the midday sun.
Hisashi Perception: 24 in game log. Hisashi recounts what she saw in the case: "Tasha the Wizard—Known for Her Hideous Laughter. It said mhm. A doll that looked like a witch was in der."
To real time, she follows group and is in awe of what she sees , "Wowow dis is cool. Cool sometimes means dangerous tho, no?"
In the crowd you see the Heckler's appearance shift from a human to a dwarf. For split second you saw black raven like feathers. The hecklers are the same person.
What do you do?
The party is 25 ft from Heckler in the middle of a large crowd.
By default Gan-Re looks to Finley and the other for a sign, but he really wants to take flight and hunt his prey. He would then graple them to the ground.
Finley looks to Gan-Re, points to his own eyes and indicates the dwarf/kenku and then thumbs up to the air and then looks to the rest, saying carefully, "Make our way, carefully surround 'em, aye?"

The party is 25 ft from Heckler in the middle of a large crowd.
(OOC: Valrieth is only 3' tall. Can she see the kenku at all?)
Val whispers to Finley, "We need to catch, not harm the kenku. I can try to 'entangle' her, but it would catch the whole crowd. It won't harm anyone, but it would definitely cause a scene. Try it? Or just wait until we flush her out?"
Val would not unless she is on someones shoulder as the party was watching the water show and mermaid singing.
(OOC: I'm not sure what the rules are for targeting an AOE spell like Entangle. If she's in a crowd, could Val target the spell to be centered "25' directly that way" without actually being able to see the spot that would be the center of the spell effect?)
unless she is on someones shoulder
(Aside: and now I'm also picturing Gan-Re, hoisting Val by the back of her robes and flying her over the crowd...probably just "helping" before she even asked. Or, better, dropping an enthusiastic kobold on top of the Kenku to try to hold it in place long enough for the others to get there. 😃)
Hisashi goes towards the suspected heckler. Not much taller than Val she waits for Gan or Finley to make the first move to make sure she goes for the right one. (Holding action to grapple if needed.)
(I would say you need to see the intended area. You can use the Harengon hop feature and hop up to see your surrounding, then cast entangle)
(OOC: OK. Thanks! Looking at jumping, Val can only jump about 1' with a regular jump. She doesn't want to hurt herself, but she'll use rabbit hop. Unless Finley tells her not to...)
Initiative: 9 (in game log)
Valrieth continues facing in the direction where she heard the cat-callers and where Gan-Re and Finley were looking. As Gan-Re takes off and Hisa dives into the crowd, Val looks to the grassy turf underfoot, imagines how it could bind the kenku and prevent her from running away. She does a rabbithop directly upward but not to jump a full 10' height. She probably just needs to jump up 6' - 7' up so that she can see over the tall folks' heads. Hopefully, she can still land that jump safely.
At the height of the jump, she casts Entangle, calling on Nature to help them catch the kenku.
If she can see the kenku or can tell where Gan-Re is obviously aiming, she'll center the spell on the kenku. (The spell range is 90', so the kenku should still be in range.) If not, she'll center the effect about 30' away, straight in the direction where they heard the voices. She figures that it should still catch the kenku if she hasn't moved, yet. If she's moving directly away from Val, then the AOE would reach from 20' away from Val to 40' away from Val.
Val hopes that the kenku will be in the area of effect when the spell starts so that she is restrained. In any case, as long as Finley and Hisa avoid the area of effect, the spell should slow the kenku and give them time to catch up.
Movement: none, just rabbit hop 7' directly up Action: cast Entangle Bonus Action: None
There is an uproar of panicked shouts as grasping vines coil around the carnival goers. The song stops and Palasha the mermaid jumps into the water and swims away towards the Hall of Illusion. Even the calliope music strikes a discordant note.
There is an uproar of panicked shouts as grasping vines coil around the carnival goers. The song stops as Palasha the mermaid jumps into the water and swims away. Even the calliope music strikes a discordant note.
Once Val lands, she calls out to her friends. She wants to end concentration on the Entangle spell and release the carnival-goers as soon as she knows that either the kenku escaped the spell or her friends have apprehended the kenku. She feels bad for causing a panic, but she also knows that the vines won't harm anyone.
"Did we get her?! Hisa! Finley! Gan-Re! Do you have the kenku?"
As soon as she gets any word from the others that the kenku got away or is not in the area of effect of her spell, she ends concentration and lets the spell expire. (If she sees Gan-Re plummet from the sky, that's probably confirmation enough that the kenku got free. But it's a long time since I was 3' tall, so I'm not sure what she can see unless the un-entangled crowd dispersed.)
Gan-Re shakes off the spell. He continues the play eye in the sky and directs Hisashi and Finley towards the Kenku. If it looks like the Kenku will get away then Gan-Re will dive bomb the Kenku and try to grapple. He shouts out to Val 'Turn off the vines. It didn't work'
