"Today is the day we will see who our new king will be. You better move on unless you want to be sent to prison. Keep on asking questions just like the curious cat and see what happens next." says the aristocratic bullywug.
Finley sorely wishes he could whisper right about at this moment and not wanting to ask another question he waits to see if they're about to retreat or continue pressing them.

"Today is the day we will see who our new king will be. You better move on unless you want to be sent to prison. Keep on asking questions just like the curious cat and see what happens next." says the aristocratic bullywug.
Valrieth doesn't respond to the rude aristocratic bullywug: she just puts out her flame and moves quietly away from the partly-destroyed barricade. She waves for the others to follow as she moves east along the boardwalk.
Val waits until everyone is at the east end of the boardwalk, away from the the barricade and the bullywug aristocrats, where they can speak more openly. She still keeps her voice as quiet as she can without being able to whisper: the fog seems seems to be listening to everything she says. Val explains, "I don't think that we'll learn much from them, not without starting an argument. I guess King Gullop XIX is no longer the king. Maybe he has already joined the his enemies' talking heads on spikes." She waves a hand vaguely to the northwest. "I'm not sure what they meant about the 'curious cat.' Other than Star, Dirlagraun's kit, who's with Will of the Feywild back in Thither, I don't think that we've met anything that looked like a cat since we came to Prismeer, have we?" She looks particularly to Finley.
Since their focus is on finding Octavian, Val suggests sneaking around through the fog while the bullywugs are mostly occupied with whatever's going on in the palace. If they could get past the proving grounds (D9) to the jail (D8), they could check whether Octavian has been jailed. If not, they could try talking to anyone they find at the jails. Or they could continue to see whether Wondrous Wares is still at the northeast east end of Downfall (at D10).
Val says that they could interrupt the bullywug succession fight, but she thinks that it could be come a "whole other thing to deal with." If they could just find Octavian, they could go straight to Bavlorna's hut and fulfill Finley's bargain. Once they're done with that, they'll have time to deal with the bullywugs...if they have to.
(OOC: Val knows what their goal is, but she's not sure how to proceed. Anyone have any other suggestions? Seems like we either keep looking for Octavian or just risk disturbing the bullywugs at the palace. Another option might be to spy on whatever is going on at the bullywug palace, but unless Octavian is inside the palace, Val doesn't really care what they're doing at the moment.)
Aoife steps away from the wall, looking a little affronted, as the bullywug tells them off. She murmurs, "New king? That sounds exciting," but follows Val as she moves east.
As Val outlines some possibilities, she perks up. "A jailbreak always livens up a boring day. Let's go and see if your friend is there."
The party moves past the empty proving grounds to the jail at D8 and inside is a bullywug guard is leather armor and armed with a spear. The spear rests within arm's reach and he sits whittle at a piece wood with a bored expression of his face.
Wonderous Wares is no longer there though there seems to a be shop stand with odds and ends on display with a wizened Bullywug slumped in a nearby chair.

Since we have to pass the jail to get to the shop at D10, Valrieth suggests that the group should probably talk to him first.
As they approach, Val waves at the bullywug uncertainly with what she hopes is a friendly expression. She currently has her shield slung over her back, and she doesn't have any weapons in her hands. She says, "Hello! We are four travelers who just arrived in Downfall just this morning. Maybe you can help us? We haven't been able to find anyone to ask in all of this fog, and they were busy with some big event up at the palace." If the guard seems willing to talk, she says, "We hoped to find a forlorn-looking elf named Octavian. Our information was that he lived in the toadstool patch south of here, but we didn't find him there. Do you know where we could find him?"
Val is interested to know exactly what is happening in the palace (and whether it's going to affect the party), but she decides that they should focus on finding Octavian first.
"We dunnae mean ta disturb ye too much either, but we're also lookin' ta meet with Bavlorna, assumin' she 'as nothin' ta do with th' big deal at th' palace, aye?"Finley adds quickly.

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Aoife approaches the guard and admires his spear. "Nice piece of weaponry you've got there. Any ideas about how we can make him less 'done for'? Can we get in there to rescue him?"
The guard shakes his head "Sorry, I don't know of a way, but Bavlorna is always looking for entertainment. Maybe you can get her attention and pique her interest in some way"

Valrieth catches her breath at that news but doesn't say anything right away.
The guard shakes his head "Sorry, I don't know of a way, but Bavlorna is always looking for entertainment. Maybe you can get her attention and pique her interest in some way"
Val takes a breath to steady her voice and tries to say casually, "Oh, I'm sure. We actually have business with Bavlorna, and we'll be heading to her hut shortly. I guess we'll just see Octavian there." She glances back to the bullywug palace and says, "I guess they're choosing a new king today. Do you know who that's likely to be? The last we had heard, King Gullop XIX ruled in Downfall." Val wonders whether the change in bullywug leadership is going to cause them any problems. In any case, it would be good to know whether King Gullop XIX was already deposed or killed. That might help the party to avoid offending the new bullywug king or queen and their supporters.
(OOC: Unless someone else has something else they want to ask, I'll assume that the answer to Val's question concludes our conversation with the guard...)
Now that the party has learned where Octavian is, Val doesn't have much else to say to the guard. She thanks him for the information, and then she continues past the jail hut toward the shop at the northeast corner of the village. Once they're out of earshot of the jail, but before they get to the shop, Val pauses on the boardwalk and takes out her journal. She flips back to their adventures in Thither and Loomlurch. The she flips forward to today's page. She gasps and says, "I thought so!" She looks at the others and says, "This could be bad. The guard said that Octavian was taken three days ago. Well, that was the day we 'met' Granny Nightshade in Loomlurch. If Bavlorna knows what happened, hopefully she doesn't know the details." Val is open to discussing that news, but she doesn't see what they can do about it. They'll need to go to Bavlorna's hut in the end to fulfill Finley's bargain and hopeful rescue Octavian.
"Aye, us returnin' will peak 'er interest fer sure. Ah dunnae 'ave high hopes fer Octavian being in 'er custody tha' long, but we'll keep positive that she only needed 'em ta ask questions about us perhaps." Finley adds at the end.

Val suggests to Aoife, "I think that one of the bullywug knights was wearing plate mail, so you might even be able to purchase that! Or, at least, a breastplate!"
Val looks to Finley, realizing that she's not sure whether he made his own scale armor from scratch or whether he could do similar sort of tinkering with any suit of armor. She asks him, "Are you also upgrading your armor, Finley?"
Once Finley and Aoife are done with their purchases, Val will inquire about slightly better armor, assuming that the party still has any treasure left. She does not wear armor made of metal, but she could wear studded leather. "Or, maybe there's armor available here in Prismeer that's not made of metal but more durable than that?" If they have something made from more exotic materials -- a shirt woven by pixies from silk that's as strong as chain, a breastplate made of wood that's as hard as steel, or even scale armor made from a creature's hide (e.g., serpent scale armor or [Tooltip Not Found]) -- Val would be interested. Barring that, perhaps the shop owner at least has a magical wooden shield that she could purchase.
Alaric Zepharyon, my PC character for WBtWL, is a 12 year old Aasimar boy (human with angelic blood) from Krynn. His father, a Solamnic Knight, had reneged on a deal with Granny Nightshade for a +1 longsword. (Alaric's mother was an angel of Solinari.) When the Carnival came to Kalaman, Alaric (who was apprenticed to the war wizard Humphrey) was kidnapped, lured away by Sowpig. The boy was Level 1 when he first came to Loomlurch and was using his magic to enhance the toys in Granny's workshop. Granny told him, "There's a war coming to Solamnia. The enemy has dragons! And Lord Soth will be leading an army against Kalaman! Aren't you grateful, little Alaric, that you're safe with me?" Instead of being depressed and frightened, the boy was more determined than ever to get back home, so he could use his magic to fight alongside his father. Granny taught the boy some more magic, and allowed him access to her study. Eventually the boy reached Level 4, stole a Bag of Pixie Dust (3 doses lasting 1 hour each; refilled to 3 doses each day at Dawn) and escaped by flying away. After a few adventures (he met Will and the Getaway Gang, and spent some time with Yarnspinner, telling the giant spider the tale of the death knight, Lord Soth) the giant spider gifted the boy with a lost pseudodragon as a familiar, and had him fall asleep in a gazebo. Alaric woke up in the park, in Kalaman, to the shock of his father and his master. The boy should've been 19 years old, but in Prismeer, he hadn't aged a day! The following year, the carnival returned, and Alaric joined a group of adventurers. Alaric's mission: Free the other children at Loomlurch, and then help his new friends free Zybilna. Being a wizard, Alaric of course recognized the unicorn horn in the treehouse for what it really was: an actual unicorn horn! (Granny Nightshade was of course furious at her "ungrateful little step-grandson!" whom she was teaching magic he never would've learned in Krynn. (Misty Step, Invisibility, and other spells, including how to make certain changes with Presdigitation last permanently, by using a 1st Level Spell Slot.) On Krynn, the boy is preparing to take his Test of High Sorcery, which would make him the youngest to ever attempt it, at apparently 12--even though in actuality his mind is that of a 20 year old apprentice. Only because Ladonna of the Black Robes knows Tasha, and how the Feywild can warp time to keep children the same age, is she willing to let Alaric attempt the Test at such a young age.
