22 insight vs L
”What is there to be scared of? Whispering rumors are always half as big up close.” Saradie gets up to her feet. (Stable at 1 hp?) She feels dizzy but then a rush of energy, like throwing coal and pumping the bellows. “Oh my I really wasn’t down to long was I?” She quickly checks for her spear and darts. “So the bear is gone, too bad. Would’ve been a good trophy with a story.” Saradie looks about is it just her and L?
So far as you can tell, L appears to be the only other one here with you. And after studying their voice, you don't sense any ill intent. Rather, they seem a bit indifferent towards you. You get the sense that they are more capable than they are letting on.
Likely, they could have helped more they let on, but they chose to let you bleed out. Waiting to see if you would survive on your own.
"Haha! What is there to be scared of?"
The wind suddenly picks up. A cold chill runs up your spine as the shadows of the forest grow darker. The trees themselves swell and appear to be closing in on you.
"Oh....Many things....child...." The once soft voice becomes a cold, high pitched whine.
"You never quite know what waits in these shadows..."
“I fear burning everyone. I fear the truth of my bronze scales. I fear living without taking chances.”. Saradie squares her shoulders looks L in the eyes, “I fear you’ve mistaken me for a coward. What do you want with me?”
L pauses, letting the howling wind respond, then they let out a disturbing cackle that the trees swing to.
"A coward? No, no, I would never call you a coward Saradiieee. Not the girl who faced down a beast without an ounce of fear. You are merely...inexperienced , nothing more. You have not yet seen the terror that exists in this world."
A heavy thud, as L's voice grows closer.
"But I sense you see a glimmer of it, a spark, if you will."
Thud.
"A spark, left to take root, will blossom into an inferno that will consume all around it."
One final thud, and you see L's full body illuminated by the dim moon.
A gnarled looking woman stands before you. She would tower over you if she wasn't hunched over. A thick gray coat is bundled around her. Whisps of ashen hair flow across her tough skin, which you can see resembles ironwood. A hideously toothy grin greets you. Her eyes, you can see more clearly now, look like two swirling pools of mercury.
"But guided, that flame could do...such wonderous things...he he he."She raises a meaty hand to you."So? What say you child? Shall I help you?"
Saradie knows this is a monster. She knows she should run or fight, but she would either die or lead this creature to her loved ones. Finally Saradie is curious what she could learn. “I will stay with you L, until I’ve learned all that you can teach me. So what’s first? I’ve got so many questions.”
Saradie is sad but refuses to give up on life or risk the safety of anyone she cares about. Ever since her first powers nearly burned her and her scales appeared as her body healed she has a lot of unanswered questions. This could be an opportunity to learn.
(oh dang, wasn't expecting that haha, cool. Lets see where this goes >:-))
"Hehehahaha, excelleenntt, wise choice my dear. Come, I will show you what true power is."she beckons you over to her where she puts a cold hand on your shoulder.
"Stay close, you're bound to get lost if you wander." She leads you through the dark forest, parting the trees before you. Deeper and deeper you delve until you no longer recognize the surrounding area. You arrive at a huge dead tree in a large clearing. The earth is dead and tainted, you can feel it with each step. Sharpened sticks dot the ground, each is adorned with a skull, or a braid, or some other kind of similar trinket.
"Protective charms," she giggles, "But not to worry, they won't bother you when you're with me."
She leads you inside of the tree, which you find opens up to a dwelling that is bigger than the outside would have you believe. She guides you over to a hand-carved table with matching chairs.
"Sit."
Once you are seated she walks to a large pot, boiling away in the corner, and attends to it. After while, she seems content and fills up a small clay bowl with the sickly purple liquid.
"Before we begin, there is something you must do. But don't worry, it is just a formality."She grins her toothy grin once more, and slides the bowl over to you.
"Here, drink this...then, you may ask all the questions you want, and I shall do my best to answer them."
Saradie looks L in the eye, lifts the fluid and drinks it down with seemingly inhuman fortitude. Saradie feels queasy she belches, whips her mouth with the back of her hand. “I asked once already, what do you want from me. I think I have other powers, should I try them now? Why am I different? Whose skulls were those outside? Where can I rest? I’m exhausted, and feel sick.”
She is young naive and headstrong, mostly human good and curious too. Very interesting scenario.
The purplish liquid hits your gut like a ball of hot lead. Immediately your vision goes fuzzy, and you head is swimming. Her smile widens.
"Ohhh yes child, you have much power. I can sense it within you. But I do not think you should release it. At least not yet, you are not ready, it is too soon."
"That is why I have brought you here, to learn. And me, I just love sharing my knowledge with such a promising young pupil. You see, I have not been blessed with children, so this is the only way for my legacy to continue. That's where you come in, hehe."
"You see, there is something inside you, what that is, I can not be sure of yet. It is a something… primal. Something ancient and powerful. Maybe the spirits of the flame themselves. This will take me some time to figure out."
"Now, why is this so? That is the bigger mystery. These things are not always clear, it could be random chance. Or perhaps, there is something your parents haven't told you?"She gives you a sly look, but does not press you on the subject.
You start to feel hot as whatever you ingested makes its way through your body. Sweat is now beading up on your forehead and you are getting dizzy.
"Ahhh, yes you are right, you do look a bit tired. Not to worry though I have a room for you. Same for those outside, you needn't worry about them. They are simply fools who thought they were heroes. But in the end they all died, begging for mercy."Her face could barely contain her glee as she reminisces.
"They came barging into MY home, claiming I was a witch. That I had stolen their children, HAH! Can you imagine? Me? A witch? Preposterous. I asked them to leave of course, but they would not listen, I had no choice but to defend myself. And so I got a few new decorations for my fence that day. They are much more useful now as wards don't you think? GAHAHAHA!"
"So? Have I answered your questions adequately? Or is there something else? If not, then I can show you to your room for now."
I feel like I just competed in a hot pepper eating challenge also physically beaten down, and mentally stressed over L’s motives. “I’m done for now I’m worn out. Promise me you won’t kill my father.” Not expecting a promise, stand looking at my surroundings, waiting to be shown where I will rest.
"Of course, of course. I have no reason to harm you father, especially if he does not come snooping around were he is not invited. Now, come along, it is getting late."
She leads you down the hall of her tree shack. The whole house seems to be carved out of the tree, giving the walls, floors, and ceilings a rough texture. Every inch of the house is covered with scraps of varying origins.
Eventually, you arrive at a small door, which L opens to reveal a modest room with a feather bed. The room and its lines are clean enough, but you cannot help but notice a pungent odor permeating the air.
"Here we are, this will be your home from now on Saradie. I hope it is to your liking. Rest up now, for tomorrow, your lessons begin." She starts to walk away, but turns back, "If you should need anything, do not hesitate to ask. I will be just down the hall. Try not to wander around without me. The house sometimes has a bad habit of lashing out at strangers."
She leaves you with another cackle and closes your door. You do not hear it lock. A few moments later, you hear another door open and close. You finally are able to lie down and get some rest from the events of the day. The potion is still not sitting right with you, but it feels better while you are lying down.
Slowly, you start to drift off to sleep, unable to overcome your weariness.
(I'm gonna jump ahead a little bit. In the meantime, go ahead and flesh out that character sheet you have, but bump it up to level 2. Roll stats in here, just the regular roll 4d6 drop the lowest. Use starting equipment, and you can add a trinket from your home town if you would like. Also Saradie is now also a Hex blood in addition to her race. If you need the details for that let me know.)
Saradie Kohl sleeps head swirling dreams vivid and horrific but wakes anxious to learn, and eat... She feels a tooth wiggling and when she checks it out it comes easily free of its socket, Saradie nervously pockets the tooth.
(was looking over your sheet, and I just wanted to confirm you wanted to go with Hexblade and its not based off what I said about being a Hexblood. I only ask since I don't see any notes on the Hexblood stuff on there)
I guess I mistook what you said, what is hexblood? I thought hex blade warlock but was hoping to be a (brass) dragon bloodline sorceress. So Hexblood is a racial trait or feature?
OOC. So I purchased Lineages from Van Richten's and changed my race to Hexblood and stuck with Sorceress hope all the confusion is resolved and am looking forward to exploring this poor twisted little Orphan?
(Haha no worries, I thought you might have been confused that's why I asked. Yeah sorcerer is totally fine, I just wanted you to use the racial traits for hexblood. And actually, you can keep your original race, the lineage is in addition to. Howveer, I don't know if DND beyond supports that quite yet. If you don't mind must keeping it as hexblood, then that's fine too)
“Good morning L. I slept horribly, but still hungry for knowledge and power. What lessons today? Should I create fire? Or something new? You said this place protects itself and the skulls too can I learn about that? Also is there any real food, I’m hungry?”
For some reason Saradie wants to give her tooth to L... “here ah this is for you L a gift.”
"Ahh, how sweet of you, thank you."She takes the tooth happily, and places it in her pocket.
"Here, have some breakfast." She hands you another bowl of the purple liquid from last night, but this one has some chunks of strange meats inside. She also gives you a roll of hard bread.
"You will eat of this broth until you are strong enough, then you shall be beyond such trivial things as food."
"Once you are done, then we shall discuss the next step."
She watches you eat, being insistent that you eat the whole thing. Once you are done she asks you to join her outside.
She stops at the edge of the perimeter created by the warding staffs, flicking the closest one.
"Quite simple magic my dear. All I did was infuse a part of my will into them, in that way I have bound them to my will. Then I added a spell of detection that will trigger when anyone I deem a trespasser and they will do the rest."
She gestures to the tree behind her."Same with the house, though the tree itself is also conscious and defends itself. But I have made it stronger and made sure it doesn't attack me. Fear not, you shall be able to do the same, eventually."
She continues walking until she reaches the outer edge. Then, she turns to you.
"Now, I don't need to see you make any fire right now. I know you are cable of this. Ni, no, I am more interested in bolstering your power. To do that, you will need a good arcane focus. Something that can channel your wild fire. Hmmmm, I think, Fernian, yes, Fernian Ash should do the trick."
Waving her arm at the nearby trees, they part to the side, creating a small archway for you to enter.
"Go, search the woods for the proper material. In the forest, the driest, hottest area, you will find it. A a fire blackened oak. One that has been touched by the plane elemental, Fernia. The land of fire and ash. From there, bring me a piece so that I may craft you a proper focus."
The woods are dark, nearly pitch-black. But you find that you can see almost as well as if it was broad daylight. The path L created continues for about a 100 feet before becoming obscured.
(Sorry about that, busy weekend and work would not let up yesterday. Also sorry about the formatting, DND Beyond is being crazy right now. It got stuck on Bold and Italic. Trying to fix it.)
Saradie though sick in her guts walks into the woods she hustles down the path...
Survival. Mental map to not get lost. 12 nature. Look for oak trees. 4 stealth. avoid attracting predators 22 perception. Hot dry area. 7 investigation. Burned oak. 9
Well she doesn’t know the difference between an oak and a maple and with her body still wracked with heat nausea she can’t discern ambient temp so far no burnt trees but she’s confident she’ll know it when she sees it.
The forest engulfs you as you enter. The going is slow, and the Sid effects of your 'breakfast' don't help. For the first hour or so, you are unable to find anything useful, but neither do you encounter any hostile beasts. You also have a good understanding of the surrounding terrain, and are confident you could find your way back without much trouble.
(I'll say with those rolls it just takes you longer than normal to find the area. This doesn't have any effect right now, but could be problematic later)
After several hours of searching, you start to feel your throat tightening as the air becomes drier. Similarly, the ground is starting to look barren and crusty. The trees, while not burned, are starting to look ragged.
The howling wind blows up clouds of dust all around you, making your nose itch, but still you can make out hints of sulfur in the air. You seem to have found the dry area that L was talking about. However, you do not see any trees that look as described.
Besides the trees, the rest of the area looks empty, except for a few vultures resting on some branches. From here, it looks like you could continue further into the barren landscape, or try to walk the perimeter. (or if you want to do something else let me know)
Saradie walks into the dry barren landscape after awhile though she will stop. Saradie sits down takes a sip from her water skin, and focuses on the tooth she gave L she will watch and listen through this eerie token trying to get a sense of L’s doings when she’s not present.
