With expert control, you move the dirt around the tree, exposing its roots. Slowly, its tip begins to droop down to the ground until the entire tree is on its side.
The critters pay you no mind, not noticing the work you have done. Looking at the bottom of the tree's roots, you can see a tiny flaming core. In its current position you could easily reach down into that core, but the heat coming from it makes you wary. You aren't sure how hot it is or whether you can grab it safely.
The heat intensifies as your hand reaches deeper in. Sparks leap from the core, stinging your arm, then, just as your finger touches it, flames shoot out, engulfing your hand.
(let me get a con save, or if you prefer, you can roll me another check with your magic ability stat ti see if you can keep the flames in check.)
The fire crawls up your arm, for a moment the pain is intense, but slowly you start to take control. You steady your breathing and extend your will onto the burning wood. The fire fights back, but you are stronger. You know now that in order to overcome L you will need more power, and this tree is part of that.
The flames surrender to you and shrink down to a comfortable warmth that feels right in your hands. With a firm tug, you pull off a good chunk of the heartwood. Once in hand you can feel your arcane powers surge. With this, your flames will surely grow.
Saradie looks at her fingertips noticing the beginning of coppery scaling where the skin was more intensely burned she actually smiles in spite of the pain. Inadvertently as she readies to head back she gives in to the cantrip primal savagery carving the heartwood lovingly as she goes.
The wood sparks and cracks as you carve it, already becoming attuned to your arcane signature. (just for fun give me a flat charisma check). Above you the tiny creatures pause as they finally notice the felled tree. But once they catch sight of your clawed hands, they quickly disperse.
With the path clear, you make your way out of the burned lands and back into the dark forest. The marks you made earlier make the return trip easier in terms of finding the right direction. However, the extra time it took you to find the tree is now catching up with you. Before long, night falls upon the woods and you start to hear all manner of strange noises creeping along the path. (let me also get a d100 check to see how lucky you are)
(ooooooo, interesting. I wonder how this will play out)
You wander the forest for another hour or so, and suddenly you feel lost. The forest looks different than it did in the light of day and you are unable to see any of your marks. Then, out of the corner of your eye you see light, moonlight. It shines brightly, illuminating a large open field. The light glitters beautifully over the tranquil flora and fauna that frolic under the night sky.
It calls to you, beckoning you to run through its glades and sample its fruits. But at the same time you feel uneasy, standing so close. Something deep inside you tells says you unwelcome here.
Saradie stops gazing longingly at the glade, in her mind she imagines her mom dad and herself taking a picnic. Then the scene switches to her parents heads outside L’s tree, her stomach aches remembering L’s nasty stew.
Saradie looks at her hands recently burned already showing scales like previous burns.
A single tear forms in her eye, she shakes her head and moves away from the glade.
You turn to flee, but find you cannot. Something has gotten hold of your leg. Looking down, you see thick roots bursting from the ground to entangle you. The spread out and try to restrain you. (strength save)
You struggle against the vines, but overpower you, holding in place where you stand. They stop short of strangling you.
From behind, you hear an angry snort, followed by heavy hoof beats that seem to be coming toward you. Then a commanding voice calls out.
"So you've finally shown your face eh, Forlorna? I knew I recognized that evil stench. Did you think I'd let you leave? So you can crawl back into your dank hole? No, not again, this time we end it. You--."
The voice stops about 20ft from you. You feel the vines loosen just a tad. Not enough for you to escape, but enough that you can move your head.
Looking back, you see the glorious sight of a unicorn standing in glade. The moonlight sparkles off it's golden horn. It's coat is a lustrous platinum, and it's mane a majestic pale white. It's eyes are pitch black, but within them the light of thousands of stars twinkle vigorously.
"You...are not Forlorna,"the vines tighten again,"but you smell like her..."It raises it's horn menacingly.
"Speak! Explain yourself. Who are you? And why are you here? Your answer shall determine your fate."
“I think Forlorna is L and L has promised to teach me how to control my special powers. She feeds me nasty food and said she wouldn’t hurt my father. She sent me to get this ‘Burnt wood’. I think I’m lost. Who are you? What is this place?” Saradie wipes the tear from her eye if she can, staring in wide eyed wonder at the 🦄
"So, you do know her, I might've known,"another angry snort escapes their nostrils.
The unicorn steps closer, its horn glowing brighter now as it raises its head to get a closer look at your face. Particularly you notice they are paying special attention to your forehead.
"I am known as Uniflora, and I am the guardian of this forest. Sworn to protect the ancient spirits that make their home here."She gestures to the mysterious glen they emerged from.
"Oh yes, you are quite lost if Forlorna be your master. Lost, and wicked!"
The unicorn's majestic face fills with rage, but subsides as they see your tear.
They sigh, taking a moment to compose themselves before walking around until they are standing directly in front of you.
"You have my sympathies child, I know that witch is crafty, and likely she has already cursed you. That 'food' you have been eating is probably the catalyst. Even now I can sense her within you, therefore, I must ask, why should I let you leave?"
“If I do not return, my father and friends may be hurt by L. She promised me she wouldn’t, but if I betray her she may, out of spite, hunt them down and kill them. Please I know she is a bad apple, but I had a vision of my dad’s head on a pike outside her hovel. I can’t bear it, please help me.” At this Saradie lets go the floodgates sobbing slobbering and immediately feels exhausted.
Uniflora's eyes stare deep into your own. This unicorn is no fool, you can see it. They are a fierce warrior who know what needs to be done. And yet, they are still a celestial being, one that cares for all living things. It's steely gaze softens and it bows its head. Your plea has moved their heart.
"Stay your tears child, I understand. She is crafty, and cruel. If you say she has your parents hostage, then it is likely so. As guardian, it is my duty to watch over all of you. I wish I could say I will handle it, and that your parents will be safe. But she is clever, and will not go down so easily. Traps litter this entire area, and her home is hidden from my sight. Her wards are powerful. If I could meet her face to face, away from her lair, then I could easily dispatch her. Though I do not see how I would. For years I have searched, but all in vain."
They look at you once more and wave their horn. The vines recede and you are freed."I will let you go, young one, but heed my words. If next time we meet, I see the evil within you has won, then I shall strike you down without hesitation."Again that cold stare that could freeze an ocean locks onto you.

I rolled a 17 on my character sheet then remembered she’s not linked to a campaign so not sure if you can verify her rolls... so I’ll roll on thread.

No worries it’s worth a wait.
