Mud inclines his head respectfully as the other two goblins sneakily scout east.
He starts to respond to Rasen, then wonders, how did he know I was thinking there was no plan and answer like I spoke it aloud? I didn't say anything about no plan just now. Anyway... he shakes himself and decides not to worry about it.
"All right, so when Dox and Zark return, unless they find something interesting, do one of you two humans," (glancing at Rasen and Shadowheart) "want to approach the miners? Maybe ask for the foreman? I don't know. Might help us find out the layout of these caves without having to explore every inch." It is clear Mud would much rather explore the horizons of an open sea than blunder around forever in tunnels like an earthworm.
Stoney pipes up. "Maybe I should approach the miners. I am quite the empathetic and persuasive speaker."
He is a bit miffed when Mud and the others (rightfully) don't even consider his suggestion for a moment.

"Well" says Rasen "We can certainly approach the miners and ask them but we should have some reason to be here... I mean, we just broke into the complex... that could be suspicious"
Meanwhile the two sneaky goblins reach the end of the east passage. It opens into a chamber lit by the embers in a brasier. There is a table and some bunks made with wooden plancks. They can see there is a drunken or sleepy goblin sitting at the table, apparently plahying cards with himself. They can hear some snoring from one of the beds and thanks to their darkvision they can see two other goblin figures alredy in bed.
The two goblins share a glance of relief. Well this is much easier than running into humans!Grrzark gestures at the goblin playing cards and Phodoxia nods in agreement. "Just one of us," she whispers. "Just in case."
"Well, then that's me," Grrzark whispers back, not leaving room for argument.
Phodoxia shrugs, and stays to the shadows, while Grrzark sheathes his battleaxe and then boldly steps out into view, heading towards the goblin playing cards at the table. "Hey!"he says, in Goblin, friendly, but not too loudly, out of respect for the sleepers. "What's the game? Can I join?"
The goblin doesn't even look back to Phodoxia and replies in a sleepy voice.
"you are not here to play... just do your job and leave us aline... " he continues talking, almost to himself but Phodoxia is able to hear him "Do you think it is easy to look all those slaves and endure their constant cries... please I have a family.. please I need to see the sun... stupid humans and stupid slaves and stupid boss making that other humans work... 'to mantain appearances' " he says mocking the voice of someone else "Just make them slaves too... stupid slaves... stupid cards... and stupid you " he says looking to Phodoxia for the first time... it is clear for the goblin now that her interlocutor is not only sleepy but very drunk "still there? Clean the letrines and leave already..." he orders
Mud's ears perk up at the sound of goblin being spoken nearby, and apparently not by Dox and Zark to each other. He creeps east and arriving in the room, catches the last of what the strange goblin appears to be drunkenly mumbling about. His heart sinks at the mention of crying slaves...
No greater life than a life lived free.
He puts on a sympathetic face, with some sincerity since this sleepy goblin hardly seems to be a mastermind behind whatever is happening here. He speaks in goblin, ever so slightly tinged by a faraway accent. "It's hard duty, I know, and no one thanks you. I've pulled the midnight watch and mended more lines and nets than I can remember when I wish I was sleeping in my quarters. What do you really think of all the crying slaves? And the other humans - the miners? And most of all, the 'stupid boss', right? Have you talked with them much?"
Mud nods as if he is already agreeing with whatever the goblin's response is. Persuasion: 17
Grrzark grins crookedly, pressing his point as if he was far too thick to get the point of the drunk goblin's commands or complaints. "Just one hand of cards? You look like you need a break, pal."
In the shadows, Phodoxia rolls her eyes... then watches as Mud creeps up and begins to ask questions as well. Well, maybe Mud's skills are more suited than Zark's to this... not for nothing did Zark get tossed out of the tribe... dummy...
She stays hidden for now, though. Grrzark, on the other hand, looks rather put out by Mud's sudden appearance, and fails to grasp the significance of what ought to be an information-gathering ploy. "Hey, what are you doing here? Didn't you hear what he said about cleaning the latrines?"
"Hey now," Grrzark protests. "Hey, we didn't do anything to Poobite. Don't mind my friend Mud here, he's a little touched in the head, he doesn't get it. He doesn't mean any harm, though. C'mon, I just wanted a game of cards. Do we really gotta get the swords out? I've got a bigger one than you. Look at this? Isn't this fantastic?" Grrzark slings his greataxe from its sheath on his back, hefting it expertly and letting the reflection of the embers ripple off its well-sharpened edge.
Phodoxia remains hidden in the shadows, but chews on her bottom lip and keeps her hands where she can quickly grab her daggers.
Grrzark Persuasion: 16 (rolled in game log) Grrzark Intimidation: 3 (rolled in game log)
"That is so big you propably cut yourself with it in half... you have tiny hands hahaha"
The others laugh along with the one that seem to be their leader, at least of this small group.
"Now tell us Tiny-hands, who are you and where do you come from? did the boss hired you? We Needle Toes need no help! We can take care of the slaves!!"
Grrzark glowers, fury burning in his little eyes. It's clear that he doesn't like being called "Tiny-hands" or being laughed at. A tense moment passes that is uncertain whether or not he'll lose his cool and start swinging the Greataxe at the laughing Needle Toes.
Phodoxia, alarmed, takes this moment to rush from hiding and place herself ingratiatingly between Grrzark and Mud and the goblin leader of the Needle Toes. As she moves she dips one gloved finger into a pouch at her belt, unobtrusively smearing a dab of powder on her cheeks before she appears in the light of the brazier.
"Hey there, handsome," she says to the leader, with a sweet and charming smile. "We're from the Maw Tooth. So sorry we disturbed you. There was a human that hired us. Not to take your job. Maw Tooth aren't slave drivers really. We do alchemy, mostly. Make poisons. We're just here to look around, see what's here, see if we might, uh, you know... be able to be of any assistance. Might you need anything like that? Oh, my name's Phodoxia." She bats her eyes coyly at him.
(Phodoxia casts Friends on the goblin leader to grant advantage to Charisma checks directed at him for the next minute) Phodoxia Persuasion: 23 (rolled with advantage in game log)
Mud suppresses a sigh, thinking... I am starting to remember why I left my clan to start with. These goblins... their horizons are so narrow and their minds are so closed... perhaps not Dox though. Procan guide our tongues or our blades, whichever suffice. And about these slaves...
A friendly grin remains on Mud's face and he steps up to the side of and a bit to the right of Phodoxia demurely. Not hostile, but balanced on the balls of his feet and his hand not far from the hilt of his cutlass. Ignoring Grrzark's glower and addressing the strange goblins.
(In goblin) "Not here to jam you up or mess your lines. Listen to Phodoxia. Promise you this - we make much better friends than enemies."
"A human?" says the one who was talking before looking at Phodoxia with an not so hidden interest in mind. He does makes the next question but it is obvious that he has another things in mind " We were hired by Bazilik Erak"
"Yes but the stupid humans Bazilik is a dwarf... remember?" says the one who was playing solitarie when they entered.
"Ah yes... yes..."
"But what need has Bazilik to pose as a human? or to hire the Maw Tooth?" ask the third
"Hmm yes.. you are right. " replies the leader "Specially one as pretty as you... my comrades here make good questions... mind to answer them?" he asks to the new goblins but looking at Phodoxia.
"Oh, yeah," Phodoxia nods thoughtfully. "It wasn't that guy who hired us. It was somebody else. Forget his name but his agent is Rasen. Maybe he's got some business agreement with the dwarves eh? He only hired us because we were at hand... and hungry... just luck of the draw really, and we know how to make ourselves useful. We're scouting first off, then we report back... I'd just assume they're working together... you don't suppose they're not, do you?" Phodoxia pulls a wide-eyed, heartfeltly concerned glance at the Needle Toes leader.
Grrzark, oblivious to Phodoxia's spell of interest, stands flustered with his growing anger stayed by her intervention, but then he notes the look given by the one goblin to his companion, and his grip tightens on his Greataxe... he seems quite in the mood to find something to be angry about, now.
The suspicious face of the two goblins, deepen, but the one under Phodoxia spell keeps relaxed. He even approach her.
"But come come, sit, have a little bit of wine... " he offers to Phodoxia, clearing ignoring Mud and Grrzark, and putting his arm around Phodoxia's waist to guide her to the chair.
"Who is this Rasen?" ask the one who was playing " And where is he?"
