The city of Rinkester is the capitol of Galstrum, a kingdom surrounded by warring nations. To the North, Oshorya and Alstad continue their battle of many decades; and to the South, the recently divided countries Oblaita and Iprien continue their civil war. Rinkester is a center of knowledge and discovery among all this conflict. It has thriving industry and boundless potential for education and development for those with the will to exceed the bounds of their own achievement.

I am a fairly experienced DM and have done play-by-post before, but usually the campaigns struggle to keep up momentum over time. The idea behind Adventures in Rinkester is to remedy that with shorter term arcs. Each arc should be about one month of posting about once a day, and at the end of that there will be an opportunity to bow-out if you can't participate for the next arc and some new players can enter.
I am looking for 4-6 players for the first arc. Applications will close on June 14th.

Lore: Galstrum is neutral in the wars around it, simply providing weapons and other equipment to paying customers. Within Rinkester, there are many factions, including:
The King's Court: royalty, nobles, and advisors to the King of Galstrum. Recently, many members have been trying to gain the aging king's last-minute favor.
The Industrial Guild: leaders and scientists helming technological advancement in Rinkester. Recent breakthroughs have allowed for firearms and some new transportation technologies to be pioneered.
The Merchant's Coalition: prominent merchants banded together to maintain autonomy in their sales.
The Rinkester Police Force: local police force that operates at the behest of the king and his laws. There are numerous positions, ranging from police officers to private investigators and guards of the King's Court.
The Veidant Academy: a massive school in Rinkester, the most notable in all nearby countries. This institution offers mundane, technological, and magical learning.
The Church of The'am: the church of the main monotheistic religion in the area. The faith of The'am denies the existence of all gods other than The'am.
The Temple of the Five: the temple of the main polytheistic religion in the area. The faith of the Five identifies the deities Senuth (war, civilization, etc.), Semoquant (change, nature, etc.), Irthaun (knowledge, magic, craft, etc.), Jipiet (deceit, destruction, etc.), and Nelethor (death, life, etc.).

Character Name: Qir
Race: Goblin
Class: Divination Wizard
Background: Hermit
Backstory: When they noticed that Qir saw things before they happened, they banished him from his clan, even though he had barely reached adulthood. Sure that he would die in the wilderness, he desperately went towards more civilised and more traveled roads, knowing that his appearance can be a reason to be killed even faster. Nevertheless, the visions he received never showed a brutal end for him, which gave him confidence and strength to test his fate. He found that a lone Goblin wasn't considered much of a threat on the roads and less a target for bandits, so he was left unbothered. He lived on the road and begun to converse with traveling folk offering foretelling for coin, which let him live a most simple life. Some day travelling acolytes of Irthaun crossed his path and he told them about a vision he had of them, and they parted laughing, well entertained. Though the next day, they returned to find him, telling that it all came true and offered to further develop his skills in divination magic in their temple. After a few years of service in the temple of Irthaun, albeit grateful for their training and hospitality, Qir felt that it was time for him to go on.

Sorry, I'm beginning to enter a vacation period and while I will try to check-in at least daily, I cannot promise that I will always be able to do so. From September 1, I should be back to normal.
Backstory: The disgraced son of a nobleman, his father had recieved a divination that his son would commit to darkness, and so with a heavy heart, he burned his son alive. However, a Death God had marked The boy as his champion, and allowed him to live through the experience, with all the pain still in place. His skin has been blackened, since when he took upon his name as Asher, or "The one with skin of Ash". He has strived to stay away from the path he is supposedly destined, going to great lengths to remove any anger through rigorous training and meditation. He has since set out to the life of an Adventurer, in hopes of turning his fate.
Backstory: Sir Sparhawk is a knight of the Pandion Order, a militant sect of the Elene Church. The Pandion Order is known for its use and skill of the great sword. While considered a part of the church's clergy, they are the military arm of the church where some of the stricter rules such as no drinking is overlooked. The Church Knights also engage in spying, sending members out to unstable areas to search for information. Such assignments are often long-term, requiring a knight to become an accepted member of the populace, sometimes by living for years in one place.
Arokas Nightshade descends from a powerful sorcerer family, the Nightshades. Arokas’ father, the elf Silas Nighshade, was one of the most well known and powerful members of the family. Because of his pride, Silas wanted his son to become a sorcerer as well, no matter what it took. He hurt Arokas, punishing him and traumatizing him for years in order to try and bring out the magic.
Eventually, this succeeded. When getting beaten by his father one night, Arokas exploded with magical force. This force blew his father back against a wall with such force it killed him. Horrified, Arokas’ family covered the incident up as a dreadful accident. Arokas felt horrible and couldn’t stand to face his family, who blamed him for killing one of the most powerful members of the family.
Since the incident, Arokas ran away from home, fleeing the memories and horror he faced there. He has mostly pushed back people, worried that he would hurt them, or worse, become like his father. Arokas lived sparsely and nomadic, doing odd jobs and traveling to different places so he could to make a meager living. He used illusion magic to disguise his hair and the patches of scales on his face and fingers, the trademark sign of a Nightshade. Eventually, he got to Rinkester, and decided to live there for a while, doing small jobs for meager amounts of money.
However, Arokas still isn’t normal. He doesn’t like to hang out with people around him, especially if they ask questions about his past. His mood is usually gloomy and pessimistic, though Arokas has found that reading poetry has helped himself out. But Arokas has one secret that he never told anyone: the ghost of his father haunts him, tormenting him and making Arokas relive the guilt of killing his father.
Backstory: Beshlog was born in the frozen North, a member of a primitive tribe of Goliaths who distrusted both magic and technology. But Beshlog was not content with the life of a simple herdsman. He spent a great deal of time in the sacred caves of the Ancestors, studying the runes of the giants and slowly piecing together the knowledge of spellcraft from the bits and pieces lore he could gather. He wasn't especially good at magic, but he didn't really care; he just wanted to satisfy his curiosity about this mysterious other world.
For the most part, the other members of his tribe tolerated Beshlog's oddities. After all, he was a good, strong neighbor and his search for knowledge so far had been confined to looking to the Ancestors for knowledge. But then something changed... one day, as Beshlog and several other members of his tribe were ice fishing, a terrible accident happened. Under the combined weight of multiple goliaths, the ice shattered, and on the bitter cold mountain the cracked ice was frozen over again before the half-dozen tribesmen and women could return to the surface. All of them perished... or at least, they should have. As he struggled in the icy water, his lungs burning from the lack of air as he fruitlessly tried to break through to the surface, a strange voice called to him softly, offering him a chance to live in exchange for a favor in the future. With time rapidly running out, Beshlog had no choice... he took the mysterious being's deal.
Several hours later, Beshlog emerged from the depths. But it was clear something had changed... he had been marked forever by the touch of that mysterious being. The tolerance that the other members of his tribe had up until that point shown was gone. With most of his friends and family dead in the accident, and the rest of the tribe turned against him, Beshlog left the mountains behind, knowing that his destiny lay elsewhere.

Whether it was ripping them apart or simply crushing them, it would all end with a mighty roar, wanting more. Perhaps this beast wants another Challenger to step into the pit, or some wild beast for him to slay?
Quite the opposite, his roar was not to appease the crowd, but one of great hate. When the day comes when his chains are broken, when he climbs out of this pit, all those fragile and entitle bastards will be the ones to be ripped apart, oh how he longs for the day to exact his revenge on them all. He will make them wish they never pulled him from the guts of the marsh they found him in nearly Twenty Years ago, each and every one of them. No nightly ambush will save them this time, no poison dart to the neck will put him to slumber, no cracks of the whip will tame him, not anymore.

Hi! The setting looks interesting, but I have some questions. I'm looking to make a character who was a recently escaped prisoner of war - he has grown tired of the war and losing friends, so instead of returning to the army he flees to Rinkester.
Of Oblaita and Iprien, which was the original country, and do you have a vague reason for their split?
How recent did they split and devolve into war?
As a Cleric from a different country, would he still worship one of the Five? If so, is Semoquant the appropriate deity for a Tempest domain?
Thanks! Looking forward to fleshing out this character! I posted what I have below. Gaps were left as either a choice between Oblaita and Iprien, or as a bolded X.
Xavier Jamstaer | Human | Tempest Cleric | Soldier | Character Sheet Stats: 111611151311
Backstory
Xavier was born in the nation to the South of Galstrum, when it was all still one nation. Even when the divisions between the two religious factions became irreconcilable, fractioning the country and erupting into full blown war, the effects of it still weren't really felt in his hometown at first. It barely fell within the declared borders of what became Iprien. For years after the conflict started, he lived a peaceful life with his friends and family, was even courting a young woman he meant to marry one day. That changed the day they came to town. Soldiers of Oblaita, fresh off a recent and embarrassing defeat pathed their retreat through his town. The townsfolk were wary, but accommodating. They were more than willing to provide food, medical aid, and shelter to the soldiers, regardless of their own personal feelings on the war. The soldiers didn't care. At some point during their first night, they chose to vent their frustrations on the people of his hometown. In the dead of night they tore through the town, looting, murdering, and setting homes aflame. By the time the night was over, the town had been all but razed to the ground. Many of his friends, people he'd known his whole life were either dead or missing.
So he prayed for power. Power to never be this helpless again. Power to take revenge against those who so callously discarded innocent lives. As the morning came, thunderclouds rolled in, and Semoquant answered his prayers.
Despite having no interest in worshipping The'am himself, Xavier joined the armies of Iprien the first chance he had after that. He was quick to learn how to fight with a spear, and became fast friends with his new comrades in arms. For the next 3 years he fought in battles and skirmishes. Every time they fought, he lost someone new. The losses wore him down, and by the time their army suffered a brutal defeat at the Battle of X(leave this to you), he was all but broken. He was taken prisoner, and spent 9 months in a labor camp with other prisoners of war. A group of them carried out an escape plan, starting a riot in the camp that overwhelmed the guards.
While most made haste to return get back to the Iprien army, Xavier was less enthusiastic to return. Enough was enough, he couldn't lose anymore friends in this war. And so he fled to the peaceful nation of Galstrum, seeking to start a new and better life in the city of Rinkester.
