Lokilia comes over to Dev. "We'll have to check out those crates, I guess. But why would there be blank parchment here?" She peers over at them. "You think there could be a hidden message? Or maybe, they wrote on another parchment atop this one and there's an imprint?" If Dev would allow, she will try to take a closer look. (Investigation: 19)
(OOC: The wording suggests Normont only needs to spend an action to fix Maggie, although she takes a minute to heal up. So he will be able to wander around with the others in that time)
If it has died within the last hour, you can use your smith’s tools as an action to revive it, provided you are within 5 feet of it and you expend a spell slot of 1st level or higher. The steel defender returns to life after 1 minute with all its hit points restored.
Normont heads over to the crates and parchment as well, nodding as Lokilia starts to hypothesise about the parchment.
"I could perhaps set my equipment to detect magic again, but it would either take another 10 minutes or so or deplete the remainder of my resources", he says as he watches Lokilia investigate.
"I don't think we want to tarry here more than absolutely necessary, and in truth, even then I could only tell if there is magic concealing the message but not what it says".
When he spots Maggie rise to her feet, he claps, "Wonderful, the built in recovery mechanism works perfectly".
The pages appear to be unmarked with impressions or text simply blank sheets, but lifting them does reveal another piece of parchment which is covered in a script that none of them are able to make out the meaning of.
Seeing the one page with script, Lokilia says, "We should take that with usand figure it out later. But let's see about these crates." She then moves over to one of the pyramids of sealed crates and tries to determine how they might open it to peek inside. (Perception: 25)Or even any tiny gaps in the wood of the crate.
Normont nods to Lokila, in agreement that they should take the parchment. It was not as if their visit would go unnoticed after all, not after the incident with the mimic.
When she starts to look for a way into one of the crates, he digs into his bag again and draws out some carpenter's tools.
"I could probably pop one of them open", he suggests.

Dev happily hands over the paper, lightly stunned at the idea that magic may have been worked upon it.
The teen tiefling had some experience with boards and carpentry as a lad patching up the Hornd shack, and he brightens at the sight of Normont’s tools. “I can help!,” he says. The truth is he has mostly learned what doesn’t work. But still, he has an intuition about things and picks them up easily (Jack-of-all-trades).
"Of course", Normont says to Dev, passing across the proper tools so Dev can take the lead.
"I am a little concerned by my rashness with the chest. I think I will double check nothing magical is going on before we proceed though", he says and quickly alters his tools this time so as not to have to wait.
He will then take a look at the crates, and even the blank pieces of paper and anything else around for signs of magic.
"We should be wary of mundane traps as well", he adds as he investigates. "And of course there may be some genuine crates at the front, to throw the authorities like us. We should look for any different marking, or any that have markings that are similar to the script on the parchment".
Action: Cast Detect Magic with a spell slot Investigation: 1+5=6 (Whoops) - was looking for mundane traps on the crate they choose
Dev had actually meant that he could help Normont with the tools. Underline help, since physically forcing open a crate himself was probably going to fail. But he doesn’t want to disappoint his tool-clever friend and smiles confidently, turning to one of the crates with a little crowbar in hand.
”Um… Quinn,” he sidemouths, “you might be better at this than me? I think if you put it here, that’s the best place to open it.”
(Take the Help action to give advantage to Quinn’s assumed Athletics check?)
(Sorry for being MIA, I have been on a family trip which is coming to a close tomorrow, so next week I will be back to being my normal slightly engaging haha)

Normont detects neither magic or traps. And no markings at all on the crates.

Quinn easily pops the crate open, it contains ten or so ingots of what looks like dull grey steel.
"Hm", Normont replies. "Let me take a look. Although we might have to open the crate with the crystal in for me to properly see".
Still able to perceive magic, he will take a look at the dull grey steel ingots, and make sure there is nothing hidden deeper within the crate.
If possible, he will do the same with the blue crystal crate.

"There is some magical residue on these. Or maybe they are just faintly magical. The steel is slightly necromantic, and the crystal divination and enchantment", Normont says, before continuing to examine them.
"Hm, that would be an interesting experiment, Quinn. I truly don't know what would happen. Possibly nothing, or perhaps...something", Normont replies. "I am not averse to you trying, for certain".
He turns his attention to Maggie, "Maggie, go back to the door we came in through, and listen out for signs that we will be getting visitors".
Turning back to the others, "Shall we check some other crates? There might be more beyond the steel and crystal".

Maggie headed back to the door and sat watch. Quinn opened a couple of other crates which seemed to contain similar steel ingots.
"Magical residue?"Lokilia asks. She too tries to see if she can recall anything about such crystals or metals. (Arcana: 19)
Lokilia tries to recall her studies in Zephra......she is moderately certain that perhaps the steel was sourced from The Shadowfell, there is a tickle in her mind about the blue crystals....she is certain they are not Brumestone.....but can't recall exactly what they might be.
"The Shadowfell. That is concerning. I don't get the feeling they are in the business of making money", Normont muses. "Some sort of component for something, perhaps?".
He counts the number of crates, trying to determine how much of these components they have gathered.
"We should take samples".

Normont-
The steel ingots carry a slight Necromantic ' flavour'. The blue crystal an unrealized Divination/Enchantment aura.
Normont can make an Arcana check but DC will be quite high.
"There is some magical residue on these. Or maybe they are just faintly magical. The steel is slightly necromantic, and the crystal divination and enchantment", Normont says, before continuing to examine them.

Thats all Normont can currently tell.
"What if we bring them together, with then do anything, Normont. This is more your area of expertise."
