1. After buying my mule, I will splurge one gold to feed Droop. (He looks sickly!) I will mention to him that we will continue to treat him well if he continues to serve us well.
2. I will show him the map and ask him which way would help ensure that we run into a goblin patrol (so if goblins were patrolling, where would they most likely be?) I'm guessing the forest, but I would like Droop to confirm.
3. I suggest we head the way Droop suggests, (if he even gives an answer through his snivelling). I would much rather run into a goblin patrol and get answers from them sooner rather than head all the way to Thunderwhereever.
Droop does his best to be helpful, and greatly appreciates the food. He says the Cragmaw patrols would be much more numerous in the forest itself, although raiding parties would venture outside of the woods, but in much fewer numbers.
"As the adventurers leave town, the elves and half-orcs can't help overhearing the snickers from the townfolk as they pass by on their small undersized mounts."
The party leaves Phandalin on their new beasts of burden. Having decided to travel through the woods hoping to encounter a goblin scouting party, you follow the road out of Phandalin up to the Triboar Trail. From there you set out northward cross country and reach the edge of the forest by the time it is necessary to set up camp for the night.
Leek, roll an Animal Handling check, for karma and giggles.
Everyone, I need to know the marching order. Who is in front, who is navigating (survival check), who is watching for dangers?
Elila is taking point, followed Rindelk is in the middle with Katariel in the rear. I would imagine Leek would be in the rear with Kat and Kyt would be behind Elila.
With Kitryn leading, the party easily makes great progress, arriving at the edge of the forest, as planned. Leek provides no comic relief with the masterful control of his mule.
The few days pass by without any incident. A typical day is 10 hours of travel, 6 hours of sleep, 2 hours of light duty that you can perform while resting, which leaves 6 hours a day for other tasks, like setting up camp, cooking and other activities.
On the third night, the party's rest is interrupted.
Who keeps watch in what shifts? You need to cover a period of 8 hours.
The hideout is the cave you cleared out after the ambush. What you are looking for is Cragmaw Castle.
oops!
can I get an elephant?
Barthen's Provisions has anything you can find in the equipment section of the PHB that is 25 gp or less. For example, you can find:
Lets pool some cash and get a mule and an aventurers pack?
You should all have an adventurers pack or equivalent already.
I'm going to buy myself a mule regardless. No need to pool for that.
So mule and saddle for me.

I'm going to buy 3 riding horses and 3 saddles for Kat, myself and Elila. I am not riding a donkey!
Phandelver isn't big enough to have spare horses for sale. (Limit is 25 gp, a riding horse is 75 gp).
