Quieting the voice in her head reminding her she needs to think before she speaks--'Your mind must be faster than your tongue'--Mei lets the group decide what their next step is. At Guardok's suggestion, the corner of her mouth quirks. An interpretative performance of being birthed might very well be a literal answer to the clue, but Mei hopes, for Mae's sake, it can be a performance of any kind.
Watching the Aasimar on the stage, she notes just what a natural Mae is, her radiant presence immediately drawing the eye. "An interpretive birth dance would be fun. Or... maybe even just a song?" she quietly suggests with a soft smile, crossing her arms over the edge of the stage and then resting her chin upon them. "I'd love to hear you sing. If, um... if you feel like singing, I mean."
Mae sees the group begin to divide and ready to split apart to check other areas and the performer in her feels a mild tug of sadness before Mei pipes up and suggests she sings a song. She quickly pulled her small drum out and began drumming out a gentle, lilting rhythm before her voice joins and begins singing a few verses of a ballad in celestial, about the heavens and the stars. She stopped after a couple of verses and waited to see if there was any reaction.
Immediately as Maestarts to sing bright floodlights snap on around the stage’s perimeter - 7 in total. They highlight her angelic look, feeling very appropriate for the song she chose.
Engrossed in the performance, jaw dropped at the golden tones of the bard's voice, Mei stumbles back wide-eyed from the stage as the lights suddenly flick on. "Oh! Oh, that did... something." She looks up at Mae's hands, half expecting something to appear there like it did for Chara, then inspects the stage lights.
((Are all the stage lights on? Anything different about the ones that are versus the ones that aren't? Investigation if needed: 16))
There are more lights than just those that have suddenly sprung to life. Meinotices that each light comes from a recessed area and contains a hooded lantern. There is a small note stating, 'Please take one for each student.'
Guardok beams at Mae as she sings, identifying in her a fellow performer. He had been a little disappointed that his suggestion of interpretive dance was dismissed, but the song moakes him forget about that.
As the lights flick on, he takes a look around, wondering who manned them or if it was by magic. Did they need stage hands here as well as performers? Was that a potential job opportunity if he chose to look for work?
"No...I'm sorry, that was not a bad suggestion Mei, I just thought it might be more prudent to do this together."The purple-skinned tiefling awkwardly says, trying for a more gentle tone, and deeply embarrased he then turns to watch Mae as she enters the stage. As the angelic Aasimar begins to sing and the stage lights adds to her natural radiance, slowly a serene smile enters the otherwise sinister-looking tiefling's face. He doesn't understand the words but he suspects it is Celestial. He barely notices Mei heading over to investigate the stage lights and as Mae stops singing he applauds her performance. He couldn't remember ever having heard singing like this before, in fact the only singing he ever heard was the sea shanties sung by drunken sailors in the streets of Baldur's Gate, and the occasional street performer, but compared to that this was quite heavenly.
"Mae, you did it," Mei claps along with Malvyn, for both the success and the wonderful mini-performance. She retrieves the items from the recess and then holds the lantern out for the group to see. "It says there's one for all of us? Seven lights for," she looks from face to face, "ah, seven of us."
As she holds the first lantern up for Mae, she says, "That was really, really beautiful! I hope we get to hear the whole song sometime."
Knap hasn’t danced in so long, not since he left his home years ago. All the excitement of his arrival at Strixhaven, all the new faces, all the riddled confusion of orientation washes away as Mae offers a gift in a language unknown to Knap. He begins to sway to the rhythm as if remembering for the first time in a long time what it means to be in the moment. Not like he’d once dance with his clan without a worry in the world, by the pond before it was all sucked up. But still, to dance again, small steps all the samee…
When the final note falls Knap opens his eyes nice and slow and delights in the delighted faces of his Dresar Compatriots. .
Mellori was not rude. Or rather, she was never intentionally rude. But ancient scripts are her thing, as are tomes of learning. But things like the arts leave her cold. So, on one hand she was engaged with the performance, but only because it was part of a competition, and not because of the wonderful performances. Regardless, she grabs a lantern when it is offered and...seeing the others' reactions...holds her tongue (as she was about to immediately ask what the next clue was.
The purple-skinned tiefling nods in agreement with Mei's praise of Mae's performance, then accepting one of the offered hooded lanterns. "I wonder if these will be needed for some other challenge." He says as he stows it away in his shoulder bag. "If I recall Mei's notes correctly we should be heading to either the café or the book garden, or ask our way to that alumni gallery, but I think Knap at least is set on a snack so why not start with the café." Malvyn says, giving his roomie a smile and a wink.
Mae blushed faintly after squinting through the sudden burst of light on the stage. She offered her floormates a small smile and quiet thank you before seeing that they were lanterns and decided one might be useful, despite her innate ability to bring forth light on her own, something she rarely ever did lest others find even more reason to try and manipulate her. But she was grateful for the moment and stepped down and nodded at Mei. "Thank you, perhaps later when we have more time. Alright, where to next?"
As Maestarts to move from the stage, you hear a voice calling out. "Bravo! Now that was a fabulous performance!" it calls out. You see Quentillius walking towards the Ampitheater from the south. "Such a lovely voice and a lovely song. But the stage presence! You my dear lady would be the biggest start here at Strixhaven. Surely you must join the Playactors Drama Guild."
As he gets closer, he gives Meia nod as well. "It is good to see you back here, my lovely. Very kind of you to let your friend shine on stage. Perhaps I can convince you both to join the Drama Guild?" He looks at her intently, clearly hoping for a positive response.
Mei, busy fussing with her lantern which won't fit in her bag, squeaks in surprise at Quentillius' arrival, fingers fumbling hooking it to her belt for the umpteenth time.
Face immediately flush, she smiles and titters a nervous laugh. "Oh, ah! D-Drama guild? I'm afraid I'd only darken the stage," she admits, twirling a finger in a loose strand of hair. "I don't shine on it like Mae does. Less a star and more a, um... a black hole of bad acting!" she giggles, struggling to meet his piercing blue gaze. "But I think we have quite a few talented performers on our floor if you're looking to recruit someone who won't faint in the middle of a monologue?" Mei glances back at the others, Guardok and Knap especially.
"Oh? Surely any performance you tried would never be all that terrible. It is a shame though to not have you bless in the guild," Quentillius says quite sincerely. "I do hope you will still come to my performances though. I can only imagine the inspiration you would provide." He gives Meia bright smile as he looks into her eyes. "You will come to see me, won't you?"
He doesn't really wait for the response before turning to the others that Meihad recommended. He looks over at Guardok and then Knap. "Well then, are you interested in the Playactors Drama Guild? We always need folks for all sorts of roles."
Mei's focus flits from his eyes to his smile then back to his eyes again, amazed at how easily compliments slip from his silver tongue. Her lips part to reply, but he turns away before she can do so and her posture relaxes somewhat to have his attention moved elsewhere.
There's a whirl of fluttering wings in her chest, clumsy butterflies ricocheting against her ribs and lungs. Considering the role she's being prepared for, she's never dared dream of a romance of her own. Her only knowledge of... courtship?flirtation? comes secondhand from the numerous romance novels hidden in her wardrobe. But the real experience--if that's what this is--is quite like being dropped in uncharted territory without a compass, her feelings foreign and in a language she has no translation for.
She glances up at Mae from beneath her lashes, wondering if she'd have any advice on the matter.
Chara can't help but giggle quietly at Quentillius and Mei's rather awkward attempt at flirting. Granted, she's pretty certain that she would be just as, if not more, awkward in the same situation. The winged tiefling speaks up with a grin.
"Oh Mei, quit being so hard on yourself! I'm sure you would make a wonderful thespian!"

Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
Chara! Mei shakes her head, "Oh no, no, no, no. I promise this isn't, um, false modesty or me being humble! I perform ritual dances at our shrine, b-but acting is... one wrong line or missed cue and--" she mimics the little red bead of a fireball traveling through the air and then the accompanying explosion.
"I've heard there are tricks to use if you have stage fright, like picturing everyone in the audience naked, but..." she looks between Quentillius and her floormates and her cheeks and ears redden with heat, "IIIIIIdon'tthinkthatworks!" She very purposefully keeps her eyes focused above everyone's necks now. Why is everyone here so attractive?
Knap raises his bushy eyebrows at Mei as she deflects attention. Knap then turns his head, "Oh, Hi again, Quentillius. It sounds fun, for sure, but I will respectfully decline. I’m no good at learning lines. And, I just signed up for the Iron Lifters. But like I said, I’m looking forward to watching you perform.” Knap smiles as though posing for a portrait.
Mae gave a small look of disgust as they were rudely interrupted (albeit uninentionally perhaps) by Quintellius, but sighed at the awkward interaction between him and Mei and smiled back at her with their eyes met again. She was actually quite glad he all but ignored her and focused on Mei, the last thing she wanted was to inadvertantly gain a following here at the school and be forced to spend her days avoiding people she didn't want to interact with. She hoped Mei would have a much more favorable time with the man, and perhaps they could talk about it later. She offered Mei a light hug, "Yes, I'm sure you'll have plenty of time to practice and show us all your wonderful gifts. Let's finish our hunt though first, yes?"
