Marten and Berry move to either side of the door of the westernmost crumbling stone cottage. Ivy covers the lower part of the wall and tufts of thick weeds and sedge have worked upon the stone to create long cracks in the masonry. Wildflowers sprout at the base of the wall. Marten and Berry are able to look into the single room of the dilapidated and uninhabited dwelling, through the windows whose shutters have long since degraded to single slats of wood hanging loosely on rusted hinges, and through areas of the walls too, which have toppled dryly within.
Not seeing any immediate danger, Marten waves the others forward.
The sound of Vidruth’s staff accidentally clacking against the gravelly flagstones dies in the silence without reverberation. The half-orc steps bravely away from the others, drawing any retribution for the breaking of the silence to himself alone while the others hide in wait around the cottage doorway. But the sound seems not to have drawn attention and after a few moments, the party exhales its communally held breath and can continue its explorations.

Perrin winces as Virduth's staff clatters against the mossy cobblestones of the abandoned town. He instinctively sinks down into the overgrowth, counting his heartbeats while the half-orc retrieved his walking stick. If his height can reach, he peeks in between the slats of the windows. Perception5 If he spies anything, he quietly reports it to the nearest party member in a whisper. Otherwise, he follows the party's lead, deferring to their experience working together.
Berry jumps at the sound of Vidruth's staff and turns rapidly only to see the wizard to pick up his own staff. Berry decides that this sneaking around corners is too much for his nerves and signals Marten that he intends to get an aerial overview. Unless stopped, he jumps into the air and flies to the top of the wall and perches their for a moment, looking around if he sees any movement, before ascending even higher (30 feet above his current position) and reassessing the situation around them. (Perception: 13)
(OOC: I just realized that the scale on the Thundertree map is 10' squares.)
Marten nods to Berry. He enters the ruined cottage (location #1) and waves to the others to follow him in. That way, the group will have at least some cover and won't be spread out in the open. Since the cottage has no roof, Berry should be able to descend inside the building with them, if he wants.
Marten positions himself inside the cottage against the east wall and just north of the "door." He wants to be able to see out toward the other buildings (locations #2 and #3) while gaining some cover from anyone coming from those directions. He waits for Berry's aerial report. It's great to get an overview of what's ahead, but Marten worries that, for anyone with a bow, Berry makes a fantastic target up there above the trees.
Perrin: If his height can reach, he peeks in between the slats of the windows. Perception 15
Standing on tip-toes, Perrin is just able to peek over a windowsill. The ruined cabin is deserted.
Berry jumps into the air and flies to the top of the wall and perches their for a moment, looking around if he sees any movement, before ascending even higher (30 feet above his current position) and reassessing the situation around them. (Perception: 13)
From the air, Berry sees a little more of the tower or donjon which peeks out over brush and treetops. It stands on high ground, east of the structure labeled 3, and beyond a strip of tall holly bushes and several old hickories. The tower is roofless, perhaps 30’ in diameter and 40’ or 50’ tall.
No creatures move at all within Berry’s area of vision, and a few moments later, he drops back down to earth.

"sorry about that" vidruth apologizes a little awkwardly once he's sure nothing is going to show up because of the noise, staff now more firmly gripped
vidruth, having similar concerns to marten, keeps a careful watch on berry, so at least if someone takes a shot at him they will know the location, with a sotto voce curse about not having protective spells, once the fairy drops back down he relaxes a little, but still worries "the question is, where, and which plants" he adds, referring to the sign "and whether to even trust the sign, might be bandits or goblinoids instead"

Berry reports that he didn't see anything worthwhile, no movement whatsoever. There's a tower further east that's quite high and more brush. "Why don't we just call out for Reidoth? I mean, all this sneaking around. We might startle him and get him on the wrong foot. I'm not sure if we can sneak up on any plant monster, most will just look like normal vegetation until they come for you and the zombies, I don't know if sneaking up on them makes much sense either, best is to confront them on open ground I think where we can take advantage of our speed." While Berry speaks, he touches a few plants around him and caresses them and infuses them slightly with magic to reinforce and accelerate their growth. He hopes that a druid might notice his efforts in case they don't meet him now. "I can shout pretty loudly, do you want me to try and call for Reidoth?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Marten says, "Oh! I forgot about the 'plant monsters'! I was thinkin' about th' zombies." He now eyes the plants inside the ruined cottage suspiciously, but he's not sure what a "plant monster" would look like. After their experience with one-eye in the Redbrand base, Marten feels like they should deal with each threat as soon as they see it. He doesn't want to leave some monster behind them and then get surrounded later. To Vidruth, he says, "I guess the sign's all right. If we're on th' lookout for zombies, we'll also spot bandits. If you were gonna lie, you'd say that there's a curse or somethin' big, like a dragon. Somethin' that would care off folks entirely."
Marten considers Berry's suggestion but says, "No, I wouldn' shout for Reidoth yet. As far 's we know, he's jus' one man even if he is an ally. Until we know what we're facin' in Thundertree -- and how many -- it seems safer t' sneak around. If we start shoutin', we might call out a whole army o' zombies. Or something even worse! 'N' even if we don't, we'll sure be givin' up the element of surprise. We might be faster, but that won' help if we get surrounded. Or...what's that word for animals 'n' plants that cooperate? M'ybe the plant monsters slow you down or hold you in place so that the zombies can get you?"
Since this area seems fine, Marten proposes that they move across to location #2 next. Since he just voted against Berry's idea of shouting for Reidoth, he hopes that heading to Berry's suggested destination next will mollify him.
If no one objects, Marten will lead the party along the path to the next ruined cottage (location #2). He stops at E7, outside the cottage, hiding just outside the door so that he can peer in and see whether there's anything in the cottage. If he doesn't spot any threats, he'll move into the cottage. As before, he moves just through the door and then positions himself beside the door (at E8) so that Nosam and Berry can come through into the area inside location #2.
Berry shrugs at Marten's decision. Probably he knows best. He doesn't see how plants and zombies can become too much of a problem, but he guesses that that's a privileged view for someone that can just fly up and get out of the reach of those. He follows Marten as silently as he can (Stealth: 8) and observes if he sees any indication that a druid worked in these areas (Investigation: 1).
Perrin nods enthusiastically as Marten discourages Berry from shouting out. The party already knew there were potential dangers about - the sign had told them as much. It's possible the druid had put it out simply to discourage unwanted visitors, but better safe than sorry. Marten's speculations about plants pinning hapless passerby while tearing them apart made the halfling uncomfortable, and all the discussion of bandits and goblins and dragons didn't help either.
"Now that's a neat trick," he says after Berry descends into the cottage and prompts the flowers to bloom. It serves to remind Perrin of some of his own capabilities. He reaches up toward Vidruth's arm, catching him at the elbow. "Don't let that stumble trouble you, it happens to the best of us. Tymora will smile on your next effort." Vidruth feels a brief tingle as a surge of confidence courses up his arm and settles somewhere in his chest as a sensation of warmth. Satisfied, Perrin follows Marten's lead, following cautiously, eyes peeled for danger.
OOC Perrin casts Guidance on Vidruth. Lemme know if you'd like new rolls for perception/stealth/etc.
Looking at Vidruth Nosam chuckles and tries to lighten the moment, "ha, glad it's you makin' a ruckus and not me.." Nosam agrees with Marten's suggestion and remains close as they advance. "On a more serious note, If anything comes at ya Mister Marten I'll do my best to get in the way."

Two of them come within 5’ of Marten, so Marten can take his reaction now before I start making attacks. (Everyone else, please hold.)
Marten is a little boxed in where he is.
If the wall just west of Nosam is collapsed enough for him to fit through the gap, he'll move past Nosam (counts as 10') and then just to the west of Nosam (5'), ending at H8.
If the creatures are tiny, then Marten should be able to move through their space. In that case, he moves past plant monster #2 (counts as 10') and then north out the door (5'), ending at J6.
If neither of those are an option, Marten attempts to climb up the wall to his west. (Climbing at 1/2 his speed, he can climb 7' on this turn. I don't know how tall that wall is.) Athletics4

I don't know how tall that wall is.) Athletics 4

Marten can move through Nosam’s space and jump through a broken and crumbling window next to the dwarf, with an athletics DC10, which Marten does successfully.
