The trip to the dead horses is shorter than you remembered. The carrion birds are circling and a large number are on the corpses. Once again, your nostrils are assaulted with the cloying stink of death.
It is late afternoon. The sun should be up for another 3-4 hours.
Tie up horses where they don't have to look at carnage, give them each another apple for being good boys(?), then start looking for tracks heading away from the scene. Chadwick will have his crossbow ready with bolt loaded.
Chadwick of the Eagle’s Eye is able to find goblin tracks leading across the stream. In addition, evidence of something being dragged follows the tracks.
Also, newer goblin tracks are seen leading to this area and the trees and returning the same way.
The tracks continue along roughly following the stream for an hour or so. A small creek is found that is a tributary of the stream. The tracks veer off to follow the creek. The trees are thicker here, but it is still easy to pass.

Roughly an hour left of daylight. Turn back now, or continue?
Backtrack 30 minutes, then move 15 minutes off the trail. Set up camp with double watches, no fire. Take care to avoid making tracks when turning off the path by walking on stones or logs if possible.
You find a likely place to camp. Double watches are set for the night. No fire is lit. You find a copse of trees to secure the horses out of sight.
—— Day 2 ——
The night is cool and clear. Selune continues to wane and the stars are bright. The watches pass without event. A bright morning greets you with birds chirping and a grey squirrel that is barking at you angrily and dropping debris on you from the trees above.
Shall we continue on to dead horse crossing? Assuming we'll need to camp the night before we get there?
I agree
Yes, let’s proceed.
A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
You can get there by mid-afternoon. It was only a half day away with the wagon.
Or, camp sooner and then get there in the morning?
Mid afternoon seems ok. Gives a several hours to check out area.
Chadwick is going to ride, does anyone else want the other one?
Mid afternoon seems ok to me. We should have ample light to reconnoiter and, if necessary, move away a bit to make camp.

How much light remains?
I am inclined to proceed following the tracks at least for a while, but veer off the tracks well before dark to set up camp.
1-2 hours of daylight. Then the sun is behind the mountains.
Agreed, let’s continue

I say turn back. Find somewhere well away from the road and the goblin tracks.

Let’s proceed with following the trail, with caution.
