"I'd like to start by heading out where Tarlin was headed. We head over to Terrik and Malleena's place for more info. If we can't pick up any tracks there we'll head over to town and check out the cliffs and area above the town.
Pa as you know I'm an ok tracker, but I'm sure we have folks around here who are better. Anyone you could recommend?"
He looks around the table for input from anyone else.
"Son, we are all pretty busy here. Tarlin is off on a hunting trip like he usually does, I am guessing. (edit ->) He typically heads up into the hills west of town. (<- edit) Are you sure you need someone to go with you?," Chawick's Dad asks. "A lot of people are on edge about whatever is happening with the water in town. Your Aunt Malleena worries. He will likely be back with some story about some bear or stag he tracked for days before finally taking it down."
Starker fishes the Aqualith Oracle out of his belongings and asks:
”O Oracle! We go forth to seek information from the local fey about an ancient bargain and the present unpleasantness affecting the wells. We have a glaive with us that is enchanted to help us find and, if necessary, attack fey. Please, O Subsurface Seer, answer this question: will bringing the glaive with us help or hurt our chances of succeeding in ridding the wells of their blight?”
The fish inside the globe looks at you...for a while. The fins swish about a bit and a small amount of silt is raised in the water. The fish swims through the silt and it parts, then becomes more concentrated and the fish struggles to swim through this without success. All of the silt settles to the bottom and the fish goes about its business.
Starker:”Friends, I am always suspicious of my ability to interpret piscine portents, but … perhaps the glaive’s presence will prevent us from reaching something or someone or somewhere we would need to be successful in our quest?”
Starker:”Friends, I am always suspicious of my ability to interpret piscine portents, but … perhaps the glaive’s presence will prevent us from reaching something or someone or somewhere we would need to be successful in our quest?”
Xymox tilts his head as the last of the silt settles, watching the fish resume its lazy circles.
“Charming display. Very aquatic. Very dramatic.”
He gestures vaguely at the orb, eyes glinting with dry humor.
“Does anyone in The Company actually know how to interpret this fish, or are we all just nodding wisely at confused seafood?”
"No Pa your right, it wouldn't be good to be leading anyone else off right now. Plus we don't what might be waiting for us, and I hate to put anyone in danger." He chuckles and looks around The Company. "I mean, besides us of course."
/Ooc I didn't realize Kragen was proficient in tracking when I posted the earlier comment.
"Starker, I think your interpretation is accurate and it's best to leave it behind."
“To more directly respond to our new acquaintance from the bowels of the earth, no, we do not know what the fish means. Although half the time I feel the question is asked too hastily, resulting in useless output.”
"I'd like to start by heading out where Tarlin was headed.
That is unclear. He 'typically' hunts west of town in the forested foothills. But, he did not tell anyone where he was going, or, that he was leaving. Last his parents heard, he was taking a delivery to town by horse. He never returned.
Head towards town and scout the hills above. I think we should plan on sleeping rough as it seems more likely that's when they'll be active.
"Ma, Pa, I think we are likely going to sleeping outside tonight while we search for Tarlin and clues about what's going on. Do don't worry about putting out dinner for us."
He smiles kindly at his parents and embraces his mother before they depart.
Once on the road "We should buy a pig and some other food stuffs while in town. We're going to eat up all their winter stores if this drags on too long." He chuckles and paats his belly. "I sure missed home cooked meals."

Chadwick to the group "We have portents, from Tyr and the Fishbowl, that indicate we may find more answers about the strange happenings around town and this mystery around the gifted chalice to my Grampy. If my Aunt and Uncle have concerns about Tarlin, i do as well. I would like to head west of Monstordrink and see if we can pick up his trail and try to find him, hopefully unharmed. I believe that's also the direction of the source to the town wells? On our way west, we can stop in Monstordrink and see if anyone had conversed with him as he dropped of his package. (if we don't know the contents of the package). I will ask Auntie what he had to drop off, we can visit there quickly and see if he left any idea his intentions or specific direction. If unknown package contents, we can stop at the Smithy, Livery, Butcher and Tanner to inquire."
Chadwick comforts his Aunt and Uncle and tells them he will find Tarlin and bring him home! Then turns and gives his Ma a hug and Pa and look of silent thanks.
given no objections, Chadwicks gathers his items to depart.
Kragen nods and begins to gather his belongings, including the Glaive, stopping for a silent prayer to Tyr.
Introduces himself and his merry band (motioning specifically at Hoid and his inviting countenance), exchanges pleasantries with the proprietor, describes his Cousin Tarlin and asks if he was here recently, transparent about Chadwicks (The Jenkins Family) concerns that he may have went missing while hunting out West, looking for clues as to his location and or more finite direction, appreciative of Tanner if can provide any relevant info about Tarlin's whereabouts.
The Company returned to Monstordrink. On the road there, many people were encountered who were fleeing the town. "The forest came alive and attacked the town!," is the consistent story they heard. As they drew near to town the number of refugees dwindled. Those who were leaving left in a big group it seems. Monstordrink was still populated when you arrived, but less so. There was a sense of tense fear about town with those who remained. Dead birds, squirrels and other small animals could be seen littering the streets. A large bear full of crossbow bolts was found in the streets just off of the market square. Guardsmen confirmed what the refugees said about the creatures of the forest running amok through town. Fortunately, on a few were hurt and none seriously.
Binnik, the tanner, was sought out. He and Chadwick know each other. Tarlin was here about a week ago to drop off some deer skins to be prepared. Binnik did not know what else Tarlin had planned, only that he had dropped off his horse at the livery and was completing other errands in town. Following up with the livery confirmed that Tarlin was there and left his horse to be cared for a week ago. The horse remains at the livery. Kragen paid the stableman, and for a few extra days to keep the horse cared for.
There was an unfortunate meeting with the mayor as The Company, specifically Starker and Chadwick, barged into the mayor's office during a meeting he was having with a well-dressed human man. Haldrin Brassbeard did not react well when he was told by Chadwick and Starker that they were there to fix things that he was too incompetent to correct. The two were tossed out of the office as the mayor summoned the Captain of the Guard to his office to do so. Mayor Brassbeard told Chadwick to tell his Dad to stay out of it. The unruly collection of villagers then accosted Chadwick after he told them that he would fix the town's problems. Shortly afterwards, the guard captain arrived and he told Chadwick to leave, or be forced out. The Company departed.
The closed well was investigated. Kragen and Xymox walked down the sides of the well to examine it. It is a straight shaft about 30' down. The water is foul and hissed and bubbled when Kragen cast Purify Food and Drink on it. Kragen tasted it and it was corrupted with the taste of iron and stale ale. He also detected Necrotic energy and Fey magic involved.
The brewery was scouted. It is closed and the door locked. A boathouse is under the brewery with a trap door in the ceiling. Starker walked on water to discover this. Kragen walked on the walls to discover that the trap door was barred from within and would not open.
A trip into the woods was the undertaken as The Company hiked up to the wellspring in the hills above Monstordrink. This is an idyllic area of the forest touched by Fey magic. it reminded you a bit of being in the Feywild in the areas around There. The waters were fouled. A low stone building with a wooden slat roof was found on the side of the stream. The waters were diverted through a locked iron grate into the building and down a large pipe into the ground. The stream that was usually fed by the waters was a dry stream bed now. Caellia of the Waters revealed herself at this point and accused Chadwick of being the Oathbreaker's Kin. He had a vision after being called this:
The world blurs, colors bleeding like watercolor left in the rain. You feel weightless, as if caught in a dream half-remembered. The scent of wildflowers and fresh barley fills your nose. Wind sings through tall grasses.
You stand in a sun-drenched grove where the water runs clear as crystal, laughing over stones. A woman dances barefoot in the shallows. Her hair is moss and moonlight, her eyes green with wild kindness. She turns toward you and smiles—not at you, but at another. A man stands beside you, strong and kind-eyed, bearing a crest you know from old family portraits.
"A cup of your finest," he says, bowing low. She offers him a sip from her palms.
"So long as your kin remember," she replies. "So long as the land is kept."
The scene shifts—the grove darkens. The spring bubbles black, choked with roots and iron. The woman stands alone now, her dress in tatters, her smile twisted. Her voice is sharp like wind through a broken flute.
"You took. You forgot. You drained me dry."
She looks straight at you now.
"And still your blood walks free."
The vision shatters like glass dropped into a well. You awaken with water on your hands and a bitter taste in your mouth.
Caellia then returned to her grove and The Company followed. A broken stone fountain / shrine was there covered in the slick black slime seen in the well in town. Caellia demanded that Chadwick 'give freely' to atone for taking from the land. After some thought and debate, Chadwick cut himself and bled a few drops of blood into the silver chalice from home. He then set the chalice upon the broken stone fountain. Caellia seemed satisfied with this and then detailed that the second act must be to 'destroy the sickness that has arisen from below' before the third and final act can restore the Pact.
The Company returned to Monstordrink. The brewery was again investigated and no way in was determined that did not involve breaking into the building. Chadwick knows the halfling, Yanthin, who is the brewer. They are able to find him drowning his sorrows at the Pale Stag. A short conversation reveals that Yanthin closed the brewery a while ago due to the waters being fouled and all the brewing ruined. He is morose and has no plan for reopening the brewery. The Company does talk him into allowing them to look around. He lets them in and your group casually walks about the brewery examining things in a superficial way. All seems normal to you. You then get serious and really look into the surroundings, searching for unseen clues. Starker recognizes the pattern of a body being dragged through the coal dust (don't ask he why he recognizes this pattern) on the floor near the storage niche. Kragen finds a loose tile in the floor and a hidden trapdoor is revealed. It is opened and roughly carved stairs lead below into the darkness and a room is seen at the bottom faintly illuminated with shadows of someone/something moving about down there.
Of course The Company investigates. At the bottom of the stairs is a large circular room. The low ceiling of the stairs and the room is covered with many pipes, valves and nozzles with the hardware to hang it all. It is only about 8' tall. There is a large door across the room and several humanoids with beer-bloated bodies that wobble about with sloshing movements. Their skin is slick with yeast and rot, with eyes glowing like fermenting coals. Some have half-barrel torsos and others wear ruined brewer's garb soaked in sticky black ale. These beer ghouls attack you as you come down the stairs with their Cursed Brew Breath and clawed hands. They are ultimately defeated. The door exiting the room is trapped. Hoid attempts to open it and finds it locked. He sets off a trap that fills the room with Toxic Brew leaving Xymox and Starker poisoned. Starker opens the door using Knock.
A hallway is found beyond. After all are in the hall, the floor bubble up with foul, rotten ale making the floor slick. Several of you fall prone and then are attacked by more beer ghouls from a store room at the end of the hall. These are defeated. The room where they came from is filled with barrels and an intensely foul odor. Trolkarl and Hoid are able to withstand the stench, but retreat.
A door at the other end of the hall opens to reveal a room filled with cots. Beer ghouls are force feeding cursed ale to several humanoids restrained to the cots, seemingly converting them to beer ghouls as well. The transformation is not yet complete. The beer ghouls attack. The Company is victorious. One of the beer ghouls displays a Drunken Fortitude ability and remains standing after being reduced to 0 HP, sloshing wildly as necrotic foam bubbles from its mouth. It is then dispatched.
Tarlin is found among those restrained. Kragen and Trolkarl quickly act and cast Lesser Restoration upon all of the captives. This seems to help them a great deal and the necrotic sheen seen on them disappears. All are too weak to walk.
Chadwick embraces and comforts Tarlin, happy to see his cousin alive.
Kragen turns to the others. "Let's assist Tarlin and the other captives to the main level of the brewery where Yanthin can bring the town guard and others to help get the captives to a safe place."
"As Mage Starker has demonstrated, we probably need to search these areas more thoroughly to find out Why and How this place came to be and if there is more danger near or hidden. We were not able to enter the storage room due to the noxious stench, i can purify the air for us to enter and investigate when ready."
"Sir Chadwick, your legend grows and your families history will be rewritten with deeds here in Monstordrank! Tyr smiles upon you."
Starker: “I agree with Colleague Kragen, we should go over the lower level of the basement with a fine-toothed comb. I am fairly certain the unfortunate foes we encountered were erstwhile victims, and that there is likely a more puissant foe still hidden. After we have seen Chadwick’s cousin and the others to safety I will go down with Kragen and any others who would like to investigate.
”Chadwick’s vision more strongly damns the brewer as the damming first cause of the troubles. ‘"You took. You forgot. You drained me dry."’ The town should insist that the pipe and the wellspring house be removed and the streams allowed to flow naturally. After all, the brewery lasted generations without that innovation.
”I doubt we have completed the second part of three actions with which the watery maid with charged our young friend, but it is not impossible. After we investigate and clear the brewery cellar or cellars we should go back and seek her aquatic advice.”
