As Luk bellows and Aeran charges forward, one of the goblins awakes from its slumber to something approaching a nightmare. Scrambling to its feet in a panic, it has time only to kick its comrade into wakefulness and make wild gestures and incoherent squeaks in an attempt to communicate the nature of the threat bearing down on them.
As his comrades leap into action, what does Alden do?

Alden looses an arrow as Aeran and Lukuth sprint forward to engage the sleep-befuddled goblins. The bushes obscuring his view are a blessing to the goblins, as his shot flies wide of the mark.
Lukuth reaches the near bank of the stream as Aeran plunges into the icy, ankle-deep water at a flat-out sprint. Without breaking stride, the great goliath hurls a javelin at the most alert goblin. The point punches into the creature's chest and the power of the throw drives it straight through and out the back of its rib cage. Its trajectory takes it plunging into the ground and the dead goblin hangs suspended on it like some grotesque puppet. Its comrade looks on in shock, robbed of its ability to react by the speed and ferocity of the onslaught.
Meanwhile back with the Malcolm and the oblivious Mayres, Mara, eyes closed in concentration, mutters some words and makes a small gesture which ends with her fist grasping tight. If anyone was watching her and Willow, which they aren't, they would notice that as she makes this final gesture, Willow springs from her hiding place in the bush and leaps at the remaining goblin.

As Willow's paws make contact with the goblin's leg, there is a blinding flash and a crack of electricity which makes the small hairs on Aeran and Lukuth's arms stand on end. The goblin doesn't even have time to cry out. It simply topples full-length to the ground, a wisp of smoke rising from the top of its head. Willow sits by the corpse and begins nonchalantly cleaning her paws, whilst Mara cries out a "WHOOP!" and punches the air in excitement.
Perhaps alerted by the noises of battle outside the cave mouth, a third goblin emerges from within. It hurries into the light and skids to a halt as it surveys the scene that confronts it. Its two comrades lie dead, an angry goliath and an elven warrior are charging across the stream, and a man with a longbow is turning towards him.

As the two goblins meet their death swiftly, Aeran's eyebrows jump up in surprise. Not because of the well-directed javelin thrown by Luk but more so by the quick thinking of Mara.
Clenching his teeth due to the surprisingly chilly water he is currently walking through, his attention gets diverted by movement to his left and the elf turns in that direction, noticing the third goblin on the river bank. The paladin finishes crossing the river and charges towards the enemy, swinging his longsword to slash the goblin once he gets into range. Attack: 21 Damage: 6.

Aeran Dormaris - L2 Paladin on his way to Phandelver
This goblin is wearing a chain mail shirt, with a round shield on its left arm and a vicious-looking cleaver-like sword clutched in its right hand. This is in contrast to the ragged leathers of the two sleeping sentries. Its eyes dart about as Aeran redirects his charge and closes the distance to his new target. As Aeran swings his longsword with the practiced efficiency of a trained swordsman, the goblin raises its shield a fraction too late. The blade passes over its rim and slashes across its cheek, spraying drops of goblin blood as it exits. The jolt of impact that Aeran feels through the hilt of his sword tells him that he has made a maiming blow.
Though staggered, the goblin remains on its feet. As Aeran recovers his posture after the swing, his opponent bats his blade away with its shield, turns, and runs back into the cave. As it does so it screeches a warning in the guttural language of goblins, its voice mangled by the ragged tear in its cheek and gurgling on its own blood. Alden watches its diminutive form recede into the darkness of the cave before he is able to loose another arrow. He must now decide what to do.
At least now they know we're here - my goblin speaking skills are a bit rusty but the colleague is definitely calling for reinforcements from the cave.
Let's regroup and think a moment.
Through the front door or maybe there's another entrance we can sneak in through?
Mara comes running up the slope towards the cave entrance, where Alden, Luk, and Aeran are standing after the brief but violent exchange with the goblins. She’s clutching the crystal-topped staff in her right hand whilst the left is preventing her hat from making an escape. She’s puffing a bit when she arrives but she’s beaming.
”Gosh, how exciting!” she exclaims, then looks over to the dead goblins and wrinkles her nose. She indicates the cave mouth with her staff.
”I expect that chap will be back soon, with some friends.” She looks around the area. “Perhaps we could lay some sort of trap or ambush for them? I have a spell that could put some of them to sleep, if you think that would help?” She bends down and pets Willow, who has emerged from the bushes.
The high elf looks at each of the party members, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. His golden eyes linger on Luk's intimidating figure for a bit longer, before eventually moving on to the entrance of the cave.
"I don't know how feasible that will be. None of us are particularly skilled with traps it seems... Or stealth..." he says slowly as his gaze returns to the goliath. "But we do still perhaps have some time before they regroup and make a proper strategy on how to act. Maybe we should just keep going?"

"Good idea!" She says, clapping her hands excitedly. "Ooh, it's probably dark in there though. Here..."
She waves the top of her staff in a tight arc and utters a single word. As she does so, Willow trots over to Lukuth and rubs herself againts the tip of his axe, which is hanging down by his side. As she does so, a light blooms. It seemingly emanates from the wood of the axe haft and is bright enough to see in the rain-dimmed daylight. Mara smiles.
With his axe tip glowing, Lukuth charges into the mouth of the cave after the fleeing goblin. The cave is in a hillside and is more of a crack than a tunnel. Five feet wide at the entrance, the ceiling is 20 or so feet high and jagged with stalactites. The floor slopes steeply upwards from the cave entrance. The rushing of the stream outside becomes a low roar inside, the sound bouncing off the stone walls and filling your ears.
The wounded goblin breaks right, and as you come level with the chamber that he has entered, your light filling the dark recesses, you see three ragged-looking wolves in there with him. Their keen hearing has identified intruders and they are straining at the rusty chains that secure them to the cave floor, snarling and barking in their desperation to tear you apart. The stench of animals and rotting flesh wafts over you as you appear at the top of a couple of rough-hewn steps which go down to the wolves' prison.
The wolves are not interested in your quarry, who is working at releasing the shackles that bind them. They must have been trained not to attack their keepers. Either that or they see Lukuth as a much tastier option.
As you round the corner in pursuit, he releases the first wolf and moves on to the second and third shackles. The mangy creature hurls itself at Lukuth, jaws slavering and wide open. It is going for your throat.
This is the current situation. If you think you should be somewhere different to start this encounter, let me know. Mayres is hanging out with Malcolm and reading his book!
Despite the imminent attack, when he sees the bad shape in which the wolves are, Aeran grits his teeth. "Vermin! To treat the animals like that!" Anger flashes through his face, as he looks over at the goblin. His hands grip the hilt of the sword and the shield harder, as he readies himself for the fight.

What he can do with the javelin, my bow can do as well. Alden says quietly to himself and shoots an arrow at the other goblin

Yes Luk I know you don't like sneaking
Luk clearly prefers the idea of charging in. "I distract them for you?"

Maybe the simplest strategy is sometimes the best strategy.
Maybe we should keep up our momentum and go straight through the front door
Luk nods at Alden's words. "We charge!" he then grabs his axe and gets ready to run into the cave and decapitate the closest thing to move.
