Kairouni span around towards the foreigners, noting how well all aquitted themselves " How many more sailors? Any chances some will flee or surrender?"
She began to move after those who had departed....
'If the marines are anything like marines I've seen, they'll fight to the death or until the order has been given not to.' William said grimly. Marines, at least the ones he had encountered so far, had the reputation of being hard men: seasoned sailors and fighters who lived and breathed the salt in the oceans. 'I reckon our best course of action would be to capture Belua. Preferably at sword tip.' He smirked. 'He seems like the sort of guy who will do anything to save his own hide.'
With a start and a sheepish expression, Seri briefly breaks out of her zealous fervor to realize that she too must pick up her equipment. Which she does, strapping on her small driftwood buckler, shouldering her longbow, stowing her daggers, and shrugging into her light, waterproof backpack.
"I believe starting with a blade at Belua's throat would suit Trondro well, as long as it finishes with salt water suffusing his lungs."
You set out from the village shortly after dawn, and it is now approaching the height of noon. The sun blazes hot and high in the sky, and despite the shade offered by the jungle canopy, it is close and humid among the trees.
Having collected your gear, you leave the five dead sailors where they fell and set off after Belua and his men. Billy and the three islanders each scoop up a belay pin, which the sailors had been wielding as clubs. Stout pieces of timber slightly longer than a man's forearm and with a rounded head, they make excellent makeshift weapons.
It is not difficult to follow the tracks of the Verdians, especially when, after 10 minutes you start to hear snatches of sound from up ahead. First, what sounds like the percussive report of a cannon, dulled by distance but still recognisable. As you progress further north and east, the sounds of battle reach your ears. The wordless shouts of many voices, punctuated by the sharp crack of firearms and the ringing clash of steel. Faint at first, it becomes clearer as the path swings to the north and the trees open up onto a beach. As your eyes adjust from the dimness of the jungle to the harsh light of the sun beating down on the beach, the scene in front of you becomes clearer.
About 120ft ahead of you over a flat expanse of sand, you see Legati Belua, his two armoured Marines and his translator, climbing into a wooden boat. There are five sailors ready to push the boat into the water and take up oars. About 200ft offshore, riding at anchor, is a two-masted sloop, rigging furled and flying the flag of the Imperial Verdian Navy. This is the source of the battle-sounds that reached your ears. Seaward of the Verdian sloop is smaller ship. It is largely hidden from your view but seems to be single-masted and still carrying canvas, as if it has just arrived on the scene. It is hauled close to the sloop and the two ships are wreathed in powder smoke. You can see the flash of sunlight on steel as the crews of both ships are locked in a struggle.
Belua and the men in the boat have not noticed you emerge from the trees, having eyes only for the ships.
"Faster, you sons of whores!" bellows Belua as the sailors strain to push the boat into the waves. "I'll gut you mangy, pox-ridden laggards and feed you to the sharks if you lose me my ship!"
Seri is far from an experienced warrior, despite the recent skirmish. Drawing a deep breath, she starts to murmur:
"These easterners do not swim so well, I do not think. They must row urgently back to their ship which is under attack. Perhaps we target the unarmored sailor oarsmen, who may be easier to slay, so the soldiers with the fire sticks are forced to row rather than shoot us?"
But by then, Kairouani is already charging ahead across the beach.
William followed the others onto the beach. They had the element of surprise on their hands but with the fatigue and exertion setting in, he really needed a good night sleep, William was not as quick on the draw as the others were.
Thea smiles, cracking her knuckles. Time to put a stop to these villains. Oh how sweet victory would be. She trains her blue eyes upon the fleeing foes, and swiftly draws her bow, knocking an arrow fast as lightning.
She darts forward, running full sprint towards the soldiers, speeding across the sands of the beach as though carried by the swift gales Serioften conjures. Her feet skim the sands as her focus sharpens, whispering the mantra she's held since It: "Justice. Freedom. Vengeance."

Kairouani runs forward, her gaze focused on the Verdian nobleman, who is totally unaware that his prisoners have escaped and are after his blood. As she stops, heart pounding, sets her feet and looses an arrow, the sailors manage to get the boat off the sand and it rides up a breaker, spoiling her aim. Packed together as the Verdians are in the boat, however, the arrow finds a home in the arm of one of the two marines, who cries out in a combination of surprise, pain, and alarm.
His companions look first to him, then inland to see you all emerging from the jungle and onto the sand. Kairouani and Thea are out ahead, bows ready.
You have achieved surprise, so you all have one free turn before we go into combat proper. Kairouani's attack was unseen and therefore she had advantage.

Thea's arrow follows Kairouani's, arcing over the sand towards the boat packed full of Verdians. Like the first arrow, this one also narrowly misses its target and hits the same marine, this time in the leg. You can't make out what he's saying over the distance and the sound of the breakers, but you can tell that he is less than impressed by being shot twice in the space of a few seconds.
Tsara and Mitombo both sprint forward 60 feet after their companion, Herim. The three of them clearly have their blood up and are intent on revisiting the ills done to their people on Belua and his crew.
Despite herself, Seri is somewhat taken aback by the all-out battle charge from her companions. Impressed at their courage, yes, but also taken aback.
As heedless as an onrushing tsunami, only this one going out towards the sea instead of coming in. Do they not fear the fire sticks the marines bear? Trondro will not be denied today, yet the Wave Father also favors those who trim their sails wisely...
Yet all she manages as she too dashes ahead is: "Get down!" (yelped in a somewhat unpriestly tone of voice).
Seri suits her actions to words and drops prone onto her belly upon the sand at the end of her run. Hoping to impose disadvantage on ranged attacks against her, such as from the marines' fire sticks. (Being 45' south of the closest sailor, she hopes no melee attack is forthcoming).
William's reflexes were not having their best day. Everyone else had already charged forward by the time he could draw an arrow. He cautiously moved forward a couple of steps, more due to the lethargy building up in his legs than anything else. He lined up his shot. His target was Belua. William hoped that should the leader go down, the two marines might stand down. He fired and followed Seri's example in making himself a smaller target by dropping himself prone on the sand.

Kairouni looks annoyed at the idea of capturing rather than killing the filth, but nods to her companions.
