"She's in good condition right now, she was pretty hurt, but I helped to fix her up. Though it was odd, you know; my healing magic seemed a bit suffocated by this implant here, it glowed and carried on. Anyway, give her a day or so of rest and I think she'll be right as rain... I'd say, Shin, let's save your healer's kit for when we come back, because we might sure need it more then, us as well as her."
As the owl flaps over to where she thought the sound came from, she ends up flying quite the ways away from the rest of the group and ends up flying over the cliff near the party. Past the cliff, she eventually flies towards another dense patch of jungle. She sees a lake shimmering in the distance within the jungle that glimmers in the morning sun. She also spots a small island in the center of the lake.
Turning her attention back to the task she was assigned, she swoops lower to the dense jungle in an attempt to spot whatever had made those sounds. After several minutes of futile searching, she eventually calls off her investigation and flies back to Shin. Whatever it was that made those sounds was too far away to be of any threat to the group.
"Interesting. The implant has a damping effect on healing..." Shin trails off and glances up as Pinky-toe wings back into sight and alights on his shoulder.
After a moment of telepathic listening, the goblin announces: "I was hoping the screeching and shrieking we heard a minute ago would provide a likely target for your hunt, but Pinky-toe found no trace of any suitable quarry. On the other hand, past the cliff there, she did spy another dense patch of jungle beyond which lies a the glimmer of a lake in the distance, with a small island in the middle."
He pauses. "It might potentially serve as a defensible location with access to fresh water. Unless someone already resides there of course. And most of us would require a boat to reach the lake's center. Of course, even the lake shore alone could fulfil the drinkable water requirement."
"That sounds as good an idea as any," Euphemia says approvingly. "Your owl friend there could scout it out and tell you if anything dangerous is there, and we could settle for the lakeshore while we build a raft. And, well, we'll just have to look for something else to eat, then!" She smiles, and looks to Korinth and Nanra. "You can take the lead, water-man, let's find us some tracks."
At Euphemia's suggestion to Shin that Pinky-toe go on her own to scout out the island, the goblin glances at his familiar tentatively and the owl returns his gaze with a flat look in her round-eyed face. Even without telepathy, the bird's expression is easily readable.
If you actually think for a second that I am winging my way out there in the open, in plain sight of predatory birds and who knows what else, you just might be even dumber than you look, greenie.
"Ah... yes, we shall investigate our options as we approach," Shin responds lamely as Pinky-toe begins preening herself vigorously on his shoulder.
It doesn't take long for Korinth to find a trail, strange circular indents in the moist topsoil. Strange.
"I have... something. No clue what, though it should be fun to find out!"
Looking back, he takes one last look at the cat and the liz-- er, Silvana and Atax, then ducks into the thick undergrowth, wondering why he feels so distracted.
With Nanra in tow, the group decides to head northwest towards the distant lake with the island set in the center of it as they follow the strange circular imprints in the soil. The prints are perfectly round, sink several inches into the moist soil, and are no wider than a coin. They're spaced about ten feet apart, and they're rather difficult to keep track of, but Korinth seems to follow them with ease. Thankfully, they seem to be heading towards the distant lake as well.
It takes about half an hour to walk along the length of the cliff jutting from the earth, it's shadow stretching far across the jungle. As you trek onward, the muggy air continues to gradually grow warmer and warmer as the sun steadily rises in the east. Thankfully, there's a long stretch of grass, shrubs, and ferns near the cliffs, so you have a good view of the area, making it difficult for anything to sneak up on you without you noticing it. You both see and hear wildlife all around you: birds calling to each other, the ever-present drone of insects, fist-sized beetles crawling along the vines of the cliff, and you even spot a herd of deer-like creatures in the distance before they flee into the jungle.
After climbing a short incline, you finally reach the end of the cliff where it slopes downward and sinks back into the earth. Atop the small hill, you can see the lake glittering in the distance, and you also spot a thunderstorm forming not too far away from you. You estimate the dark clouds will arrive in a few hours. At this point, the groups splits up as some follow the tracks while the others head off towards the lake.
NANRA, EUPHEMIA, KORINTH
The circular prints lead you to the edge of the jungle, and Korrinth is able to follow them for about forty feet into the dense woodlands before they suddenly disappear. The thick foliage overhead blocks out much of the sunlight, coating the cluttered jungle floor in dim light. There's also several stands of bamboo that reach towards the sky, their tops lost to the thick, intertwining branches of trees overhead. As Korinth struggles to find the tracks again, he sees a flash of movement overhead, and he barely manages to dodge to the side as something slams into the ground where he had been standing. Looking up from where you lay, you see the horrifying shape of a massive spider partially hidden in the canopy about sixty feet up. You see seven other stalks of bamboo begin to shift around you, and it's at that moment you realize with horror that they were impossibly long and slender legs, not bamboo.
You, Nanra, and Euphemia seemed to have found some "food", but in order to get to it, you need to avoid becoming food yourselves.
You continue on to find the lake hidden away in the forest. After a few hours hiking through the dense fauna and sometimes hiding from creatures wandering the jungle, you eventually come to the shore of the lake. Its muddy brown waters lap gently on the muddy shore, though that shore is obscured greatly by intertwining roots of mangroves. In the distance, maybe a mile or two, you can see the island rising from the surface of the lake. Waterbugs skirt across the surface of the lake, and colorful songbirds squawk in the boughs of nearby trees. Overhead, the dark clouds rumble gently, and rain begins to fall upon you. It appears that the storm you saw earlier has finally arrived.
Reacting quickly, Nanra flares her frill of feathers and roars at the gigantic spider in challenge before she races over to one of the spider’s legs and clamps her jaws down on it.
Spider:
The spider screeches in pain as Nanra rips into it, and it slams one of its legs down to try to pierce the raptor, but the spider misses due to the awkward angle.
Euphemia pads along with Korinth and Nanra, following willingly, trotting to keep up with her longer-legged companions. As the thick foliage grows in around them, obscuring the bright sunlight, she begins to feel nervous, and picks up her feet more carefully, being as quiet as she can. Not that it matters too much with her larger, louder, and more obvious comrades beside her, for what happens to them happens to her... but something about disappearing into the shadows is still very soothing to a halfling.
Then suddenly, the bamboo stalks around them contort, and something huge nearly squashes Korinth, but is gone a moment later. Euphemia feels the blood drain from her face and her heart drop into her feet as she looks up to see the most horrific and huge spider she's ever laid eyes on. It's only the battle screech of Nanra that rouses her from her terrified stupor, and automatically, the adrenaline of battle rushes into her, pumping her blood back to where it's supposed to be, to her arms, and hands, and her legs ready, not to flee, but to march forward, while her hands snap the bagpipes under her arm and her lips find the chanter, a deep breath and the wailing bursts from the pipes, as loud as she can make it, and the notes of magic tied into the notes of music, to bolster those who know her as a friend, but to sound harsh and demoralizing to those who aren't. Like giant spiders. The halfling plays furiously...
Casting Vicious Mockery reflavored as War Pipes. 1 damage to the spider and disadvantage on its next attack if it fails its saving throw.
Shin sighs, feeling uncertain of what to do and wishing he had gone with the hunting group. Surely, they are having an easy time of it...
The tabaxi and lizardfolk seem pleasant enough and resourceful, though. Perhaps one of them has an idea.
"To my eyes, it appears as if the water on this shore may boast a level mud concentration in excess of what is suitable for humanoid consumption. Unfortunately, the island there in the lake's interior is too far for me to send Pinky-toe and my Tenser's Floating Disk cannot be used to carry us over because it only follows me. I suppose I could swim and it could carry the two of you, but I am hardly sanguine about my survival probability in the water."
Though daunted by the size of the creature, the Genasi finds himself equally hungry as scared. What can one do in such a situation, but laugh? Fight, of course!
Drawing his bow taut, he aims for the beast's underbelly, preferably near its mouth! If he's going to be eaten, he plans to make it as painful an experience as possible! As his hand looses, and that familiar <thwip> of the arrow whistles by his ear, a brief memory flashes. It's a small creature hanging on his shoulder, eating flies as he wades through bogwater. It's a brief image, all too fleeting. And when the long-legged wretch above him squalls in rage at his potshot, it's all but gone from his forethought, a shadow before the noise and sensation of fighting such a massive beast.
His mind works furiously. Subsiding the excitement of the hunt to observe as much as he can about this creature, including how it might fight, can only stand to help with future encounters.
Silvana looks around debating on their situation. "Well, you're right. That water does not look appetizing at all, we should probably look and see if the lake is spring fed? Hopefully we'll be able to tell and it isn't sunk deep into the mud. That island is really far out there and unless you think the water would be better there, I don't see a reason to head off to it." she shudders as she remembers her water dive not too long ago with those teeth riddled fish.
"Shall we look for some shelther around the perimeter here at least to get out of this storm before it hits?"
Korinth's arrow slips into a gap between the spider's carapace, and it lets out a squeal of pain as goopy orange blood spills out from the wound. Utilizing the momentary distraction, Nanra bites one of the spider's legs and with an awful crunching sound, she bites the end of its leg off. The spider screeches and almost topples, and you can see its not doing too well. Being an ambush predator, it was use to killing its prey before it had the chance to fight back.
Bolstered by the screeching pain of the spider and Nanra's expert removal of one of its legs, Euphemia stands tall and keeps playing the terrifying march on her bagpipes...
Casting again Vicious Mockery reflavored as War Pipes. 2 damage to the spider and disadvantage on its next attack if it fails its saving throw.
Korinth disengages and moves around the monstrous arachnid.
Between him and the sweet lass, the two only need to afford their new feral friend time to incapacitate their prey. From there, it'll be easier to kill.
Taking a note out of Korinth's book so-to-speak, the spider also disengages and starts fleeing towards the edge of the jungle. It was terrifying to see something that large move as quickly as the spider did as it scurries away, its weaponized limbs tearing through the underbrush. It manages to get about 30 feet away from the group, though Nanra wasn't about to let her, um, everyone's meal escape that easily. With a bloodthirsty screech, she charges forward and leaps to sink her fangs into another leg. This leg also snaps and collapses as the force of Nanra's charge proves too much for the spindly appendage. Staggering, the spider lets out a pitiful squeal as more of its lifeblood rains down upon the jungle floor.
The rain gets in Shin's eyes and runs down his green face in rivulets, which he attempts to ignore.
Nevertheless, not surprisingly, his own attempts at finding a suitable shelter nearby as Silvana suggests prove futile. Survival: 5.
"Agreed. Short of constructing a boat from nearby materials, which may take time, I see no means, nor pressing reason to traverse the lake waters to the island. Unfortunately, I also see very little in general, given the precipitation. Perhaps the owl will have better luck."
Pinky-toe flies in tight lines between lower branches of trees to keep her feathers as dry as she can, performing her own aerial search, both for shelter nearby and for any apparent freshwater streams flowing into the muddy lake. (And as always, for threats and hazards).

Euphemia watches in amazement, not just at the terrifying spectacle of the long-legged insect trying to flee, but the equally terrifying charge of the raptor in pursuit of it. By the Invincible am I glad we're friends, she thinks to herself gratefully. And not just so I don't get eaten. I feel less alone and small and helpless when there's someone big and ferocious looking out for me. Euphemia knows the spell will wear off tomorrow morning, and she knows the animal is wild and ferocious and might decide she's a better snack than a friend, but she can already feel like her own trust is growing, despite that. She didn't attack the others, she saved me from the screamer, and, well, it seems like she needs a new pack, too...
Proudly, Euphemia scrambles after Nanra in her bagpipe-wielding battle march, keeping up the terrifying war cry. Even as she enthusiastically plays, keeping her head straight and focused on her target and on the chanter she's blowing lungfuls of air into, her eyes dart around. Where did that fellow with the bow go? Did he run away? I sure hope we don't need him in a pinch.

Korinth watches from the side as this new spectacle unfolds. His grin is wide and his appetite strong as he knocks another arrow an aims, once more going for center mass. The arrow hits, but not at the best angle. 'Tis a flesh wound, at best. He curses to himself, but gives pursuit. He's too hungry, and excited, to quit now!
