Shin confers quietly with the others nearby, returning a crooked, yet genuine smile of thankfulness at Keras' words.
"There appears to be a dearth of potential choke points to defray the numerical advantage of our quarry. Nevertheless, Taiga, you mentioned you could topographically alter the earth within an alley so as to somewhat reduce their ease in flanking us. I can set an arcane web to trap a few of them so they do not immediately overwhelm us. Euphemia, perhaps you can support us from a rear position and your pipes. Nanra is best utilized up front if willing."
Nettle perches on the goblin's shoulder, looking doubtful.
"Just tell me, where you think we should make our stand, and I move the soil. I can also roughen the terrain (10x5ft), so that they are slowed down when they cross," Taiga suggests and follows Shin's instructions for his idea of the position for their makeshift fortification.
Euphemia smiles nervously as she emerges quietly from the grass near the group and pulls her bagpipes under her arm. "Whatever ye all decide is the best course, I'll be rallying support. Personally, I like the idea of building a fortification of earth to strike from where they can't be surrounding us."
Shin indicates the seemingly most effective of the three "bottlenecks" (to put it generously) that he had identified previously and quietly suggests that Taiga build up the earth in that gap to make it narrower and provide at least some chance to face fewer enemies at a time (or force them to go around).
"I remain uncertain whether we can construct an entire fortification without drawing notice," the goblin whispers, "yet protect us as best you can judge it, Taiga. I will attempt to ensnare a few near the crater in a web so they cannot all rush us simultaneously. We make our stand at the fortification, picking off as many at range as we can before they close. Euphemia, if you could communicate to Nanra to fight here amidst the raised earth with us? It may not be the style of hunting to which she is accustomed. Of course, if she wishes to charge ahead, we can hardly stop her."
((Assuming that the plan for making fortifications happens))
And with that, the fortifications are constructed. Thankfully, the dinosaurs don't seem to notice the group's preparations as they lounge about in the sun. The jungle often has strange noises emanating from it, so the occasional, faint sounds of the earth groaning doesn't phase them. A few minutes later, the trap is set. Now all you need to do is just lure the creatures in, a task that shouldn't prove to be too hard.
Shin sincerely hopes that his companions' passive responses to his plan (other than Taiga's very useful casting of Mold Earth, which was anything but passive) indicate acceptance rather than indifference. He has a brief flashback of previous adventuring days. His old mates nudging him to the forefront of danger. Let the bookworm goblin be the bait.Ah well.Shin glances at Pinky-toe who looks very nervous, on the verge of flying up into the air.
"Commence the ranged assault the instant you see the Web appear. Target the ones who are not entrapped within the sticky strands as they are more likely to be the immediate threat. I will endeavor to draw them in," he whispers to the others.
His heartbeat thunders in his little chest, yet eases as he begins softly humming a strange melody, as he creeps to within 50' of the crater. Gripping Atax's raptor-claw dagger, he makes a flicking motion with his free hand, holding a tiny scrap of spider silk harvested from the carapace of yesterday's arachnid quarry. A sticky Web suddenly appears, spanning part of the crater and enveloping six of the dinosaurs.
His motions suddenly faster and more graceful, the goblin backpedals towards the chosen bottleneck. Pinky-toe flies up into the air above him, not quite having the resolve to fly ahead and take the help, but planning to do so shortly if and when the dinos charge.
Bonus Action: Shin begins his bladesong. AC: 16-->20, Movement: 30'-->40', advantage on Acrobatics, extra +4 (so +7) on Concentration CON Saves. Action: Shin casts Web on the crater, encompassing an area that includes as many of the creatures as he can (6). Movement: 40' backpedal towards the bottleneck and Taiga's raised earth.
"Ranged assault?" asks Taiga. "I don't have any ranged weapon other than my spear and if I throw that I don't have another to defend myself. No, I will be on the frontline - waiting here for you and the dinos." In a last effort she informs Korinth with a Message, "We are engaging the dinos, twelve or so, but small ones. We prepared a small fortification to help against the numbers. If you had a change of heart, now'd be the moment to join."
(Reminder on stats and spells: AC 18, 5 temp. HP from Armor of Agathys and 2 charged Runes of Aegis.)
Euphemia takes a deep breath, and, scampering behind the goblin into the bottleneck while keeping herself back so that Shin and Taiga are between her and the path of the oncoming creatures, she throws her bagpipes under her arm and begins to play a wild marching battle tune that rouses the blood and strikes terror in the hearts of foes...
Bonus Action: Bardic inspiration for Shin Ready Action: Cast War Pipes on the first aggressive dino that comes within range (1 damage and disadvantage on next attack roll on failure of a wis saving throw)
Caught by surprise, the dinos all cry out in alarm as Shin's web materializes in the air and ensnares all six of the beasts he was aiming for. Shrieks of alarm and panic fill the air as the dinosaurs struggle against their bindings, and their remaining companions all turn to watch the fleeing Shin with their keen, reptilian eyes. One of them screeches out a challenge, and the cry is quickly taken up by the remaining raptors as the rush forward to follow the goblin sage.
Taiga watches intently Shin's operation, and eyes the dinosaurs reaction critically. 'Will they fall for the bait? I think we should be able to handle half of them without too much problems. But then I've never fought anything like that,' she wonders in her mind as the grip on her spear tightens. The expectation of the coming battle and Euphemia's theme gets her adrenaline going.
Right, no ranged attacks. Wait, am I presently alone in possessing an attack at range among us? We could have usedKorrinth...
Inspired by Euphemia and humming his strange, harmonic song and concentrating on the strands of his Web in an effort to hold as many of the dinos as he can in place, Shin sends a frigid beam of blue cold energy at one of the dinos not in the area of the Web.
Shin then scampers back 40' towards the makeshift earthen fortification set up by Taiga in the pseudo-bottleneck. Hoping to draw the dinos in pursuit.
Action: Shin casts Ray of Frost on closest dino: Ray of Frost to hit: 13 Ray of Frost damage on hit: 5 cold and target's speed reduced by 10' until Shin's next turn.
Movement: 40' back towards "fortification".
Bonus Action: IF Shin does not reach the fortification, he tries to use his goblins' Nimble Escape feature to hide behind some rubble as a bonus action. However, in such an eventuality, he fails miserably - Stealth: 6 (Nat. 1)
Pinky-toe flies in the face of the nearest dino that appears might come into range of the party's attacks, taking the help action and granting advantage for the next attack against it. She then flies up and well out of reach using her 60' fly speed and Flyby to avoid opportunity attacks.
The owl's telepathic message to the goblin is dry. You really do have a death wish, don't you greenie...
The sound of fighting reaches the Warden's ear. It seems the hunt is begun! But what to do, what to do. Korinth's eyes wander once more to the tree he'd tried scaling earlier. It was a ways away, but certainly... if he could... hm.
It's worth a shot, at least. Keaid moves to the genasi's back as he approaches the base of the nearest tree. Perhaps he wasn't focused or maybe he was still waking. In any case, it's easier now. He climbs until he has a decent view of the village, and the scuffle about to take place therein. Finding a sturdy bough to straddle, Korinth scoots to the end of the branch, stopping only when his view is at it's best. He then draws his bow, nocks an arrow, and tenses to fire, aerial support at the ready...
