Feeling the weariness of the long night weight heavy on her, Lyra fumbles with her black warhammer as she circles. For once, the weapon does not seem to move too lightly in her hands and her slender frame seems encumbered by its weight as she swings at the Shadow (E) in front of her.
Movement: NW - NE, Lyra circles to end up north of Shadow (E), still in melee.
Action: Lyra struggles to attack with her dark warhammer hex weapon against Shadow (E). To hit: 7 (Natural 1)
Bonus Action: She brings her harmonica to her lips to play a rushed chord to inspire her companions, but it lacks Bardic Inspiration, long since depleted.
OoC: I'll go ahead and resolve you three then wait a bit more for Juno.
The Shadow (E) turns its head to track Lyra as she circles around it - while her own warhammer swings harmlessly through the gaseous part of its body, the distraction is more than enough for Kalaminand Leftenantto take advantage of. As an arrow pierces through its neckbones, Kal'sglaive rips through its spine.
Its finished as he slams the butt of the polearm into it, sending blackened bones clattering to the ground.
Juno, you're up! I'll leave this another ~ 3 hours.
A radiant light flares above the remaining shadow creature, descending upon it in a fiery blaze. You hear a shrill cry before its destroyed, the shadows around its form burned away by the light.
The gate is clear - for now - but you can keep hear yelling and screams in the distance, further north inside the village.
Juno approaches the person by the gate and offers a nod and smile.
"Our luck hasn't been holding out too well today. Still, fortune must not yet forsake us if we're all alive. The name's Juno. Are you hurt? Can you tell us more about what's going on here?"
"In, quickly!"Ilya calls out to the others, motioning for them to move inside the broken gate. Even as she says the words she is herself darting out of the walled village, dragging the corpses of the other defenders back within the walls. She wouldn't leave them to be desecrated, come daylight they would be given a proper burial.
"I'm fine," she says quickly as her wounds begin are stitched by threads of gold light[Lay on Hands 7HP]. The second question catches her by surprise, enough to make her stop and stare at the tiefling with a look of confusion. "No. No one here has figured out where these things are coming from." The shouts to the north grab her attention. "There's another gate. The north gate." But the south gate couldn't be left unguarded, broken as it was. She looks around for any spare wood or blockades, something that might be used to partially secure it in the meantime.
A quick glance around reveals plenty of hastily carved wood poles used for the gate - this isn't the first time it would be needing repair. There's also the cheval de frise setup just inside the gate. It could be quickly rearranged to close off entrance.
Ilya
In the time you've been here, you would have picked up how things work in Vinande in terms of its defenses. There are regular shifts for guard duty over night(such as what you were placed on tonight) for each gate and throughout the towers. They've gotten into a rhythm here in Vinande, and not all defenders are awake at any given time. When needed, there are bell houses situated throughout the town that can be rung to wake the rest of the village.
"It seems answers will have to wait."Kalamin says to the others as he moves to help Ilya bring the bodies within Vinande's walls. He hears the shouting from further within the town, and knows all too well it means another fight. "Sorry Glyp, looks like I was wrong, no rest yet."He says with an apologetic look at the Tortle. Whatever action needs to be taken to secure the gate he is quick to help. When they're finished, he turns to the young woman who ushered them in. "We'll go deal with this north gate, then maybe you wouldn't mind humoring us on some questions?"
"No rest indeed, but nicely done, companions. It seems I was of little aid in this skirmish, other than the shadows simply missing me with their attacks."
Lyra hustles inside the walls and grins at the Ilya. "Most unorthodox battle garments you bear, my lady and defender of Vinande, which causes me to admire your courage all the more. I am Lyra, and as Juno and Kal here have suggested, the night has been arduous for us already."
She plays a strident chord on her dark harmonica, as if urging all (non-undead) survivors to make haste inside the gates.
"How can we be of help? Leave one or two of us behind to guard this gate while the rest go see to the north one? Can we alert other defenders?"
After the bodies of her fallen allies are safe inside the walls, Ilya nods a quick thanks to the dark-haired man before working on moving the spiked defenses up to the gate. "Thank you." She says after he's helped once more.
Brushing off her hands, she looks over the others. They were a strange looking bunch, not the types she would think normally spent a great deal of time together. But then again...this whole situation is strange."Sure. I'll answer what I can." She says to Kal.
Her eyes move to Lyra, and she nods along to her suggestions. "Call me Ilya."Casting a quick glance down at her torn clothing she shrugs, "I didn't come here looking for a fight, and they haven't been able to find anything that fits me since this whole mess started."
"We can alert more defenders as we go, some will be assigned to this gate. It won't be unwatched for long. There were others with me here...But a runner came to fetch them, something is more wrong than usual at the other gate I feel. I need to get there quickly."
She wastes no time from there, setting off at a jog towards the nearest house. She pounds on the door until someone answers, if no one does she moves to the next. To the first person she can awaken she says: "The south gate is breached, ring the bell, get everyone up." Satisfied that the south gate will be defended from there...She makes haste for the north gate.
Leftenant moves to the gate but remains silent as Lyra and Kalamin speak to Ilya. He only adds the following before helping to move obstacles to secure the gate, “I am called me Leftenant, LT for short.”
As Ilya takes off into the village, he will follow suite, keeping his wits about him and trying to discern where the next mayhem might spring forth. However, if the new holy warrior the group just met spends too much time trying to raise the alarm, the scout will try to discover his own path north towards the screams and yelling. He, like the others, was hoping for a respite from the assault. (Perhaps if they were sacrificed by the strange elves this wouldn’t have transpired? It’s too late for that now though.)
Glyp nods at Kal with a sigh, resigning himself to the reality that none of them may be able to even guess when rest will find them next. "It's okay, there's clearly a lot more going on here that's more pressing than me getting rest.. I imagine the folks here haven't truly rested in quite a while either".
He runs to catch up with Ilya, saying "Hello, I'm Glyptemis, by the way! Don't worry, we're here to help out however we can!" he catches himself, realizing he's speaking for the whole group "I mean, I'll do that, and I think everyone else will. They seem really helpful. I don't know them that well, honestly... They're really strong though!" Looking to change the subject as soon as possible he adds "You said 'since this whole mess started'... how long has it been going on, anyway?"
At the first house you stop at, a young man appears at the door with a spear in hand shortly after you begin banging on it. You might have seen him around before, but you haven't properly met him yet. There's a haggard look to him, and you can see the dark circles underneath his eyes. Still, he listens to you intently and nods when you're finished. As you move to turn away from him, you hear him call into his home. "Liam, UP! Get to the south gate!"
It isn't long after you begin making your way north that you hear the bell beginning to toll. As you sprint through between along the dirt road between the village's wooden houses, you see others begin to step outside. The village isn't large - it takes you less than a minute to reach the north gate. As you come out between two houses you see a monstrous form just inside the gate, an amalgamation of humanoid silhouettes flailing about with dark claws. They're connected to each other by a great mass of flowing darkness that seems to suck the very light from the vicinity. A number of bodies and blackened bones pepper the ground, and you can see only three defenders left standing against the monstrosity.
They all bear wounds. Two separate Shadow entities flank them on either side.
Beyond you can see the north gate is broken similar to the south one - two other guards with their backs turned to you seem to be holding back a larger group of the Shadow creatures.
Features: Friendly Guards:G1, G2, G3are allied NPCs. Rallied Village: The alert bell has been rung. More defenders are on the way but it will take time for them to gather arms and get to you.
Roll initiative - I've already rolled for the creatures, if your roll is higher than 12 (or if you roll 12 and your Dex modifier is 2 or higher) then go ahead and take your turn.
