"Is it just me, or are they getting bigger?" Lyra's drawl is sardonic. She reaches for her dark harmonica.
She had been planning to weave the notes of protective magic from her music around one of her companions, perhaps Kalamin, since she knows he will charge into melee, but seeing they have been caught on the wrong foot and slow to act, she surrounds herself with the abjuration instead.
Action: Lyra casts and concentrates on Protection from Evil and Good (pact slot), targeting herself: for up to ten minutes while her concentration holds, undead and several other types of creatures have disadvantage on attacks against her, and she cannot be charmed, frightened or possessed by them.
Bonus Action: None
Movement: Hefting her shield and belting out a strident, yet melodic battle hymn, Lyra then advances 25' due northeast so she is in melee with both the large undead mass and with Shadow (B), hoping to draw their attacks towards herself instead of against the other guards. Black warhammer in hand.
"Half a league on, half a league on, forth we few stride, Into the valley of death and dark shadow. This baleful eve's secret is Elwirith's to know, Yet for we few, half a league on, to stem the tide."
A slight shimmer washes over Lyraas her spell takes hold. Opposite the writhing mass of shadows one of the creatures (A) swipes at the guard (G1), who bashes the attack away with his shield.
Leftenant catches Lyra’s words as she strode forward. It brings him back to hard times, it reaches into his memory of the cadence that he learned long ago.
("Forward, you Light Dragoons!" Was there a man dismayed? Not though the soldier knew Someone had blundered.)
“May we not meet such a sad fate this night…nor any other for a long time.”
The old veteran is roused to action though by the minstrel’s musings, whether that was the intended effect or not.
He had wanted to save his final spell incase severe injuries occurred, or in preparation for the next day. However, he is unsure anymore when that next day will come. It has been too long a night already…not to mention too long of a month.
He looks upon the shadowed mess in front of him and cast Hunter’s Mark with the simple words, “I name you as my quarry!” Perhaps stepping to the right to get a clear view of his target.
He then draws his next shot and releases his arrow. As the ammunition flies, he hastily moves to the west between the buildings in an attempt to gain a flanking position for the next shot.
Bonus Action: Hunter’s Mark (Damage: 6) Action: Attack: (To Hit: 15, Damage: 11) Other: Colossus Slayer if applicable, (Damage: 3) Move: as described
Kalamin's gaze is drawn to the large shadow monstrosity as the north gate comes into view. His eyebrows go up with Lyra's comment, "by morning we'll be fighting mountains."
Tightening his grip on the glaive he darts forward, stabbing at the large mass(C) and swinging the polearm around to club it with the other end.
Movement: 20 ft. N Action: Glaive Attack To Hit: 10 Damage: 5 Bonus Action: Polearm Master - Bonus Attack To Hit: 15 Damage: 5
Ilya glances back at the tortle as they move through the village, again appearing confused by how this group was acting. "A month, maybe more? Rarely a night goes by that our sleep isn't interrupted, it's hard to keep track of the days."
Her heart drops at the sight of more fallen defenders as they arrive at the gate. This was turning into an awful night for Vinande. She grips the dagger's hilt strong enough to turn her knuckles white, and her eyes flare with a fierce golden light. Brilliant, ethereal wings unfurl from her back, glowing with a radiance that matches her eyes. A few steps into her sprint towards the creature she launches into the air, streaking towards the beast like a missile with her dagger extended.
Movement - Northeast 15 feet. Remaining movement to hover above the creature within melee range (if possible, if not as high as she can go). Action - Dagger to Hit (C):14, Damage:5, Divine Smite(2nd Level):14, Radiant Soul:2 Bonus Action - Celestial Revelation (Radiant Soul)
OoC: Ilyaroll an extra d8 for the smite when you get a chance.
Leftenant'sarrow disappears into the mass of writhing shadows and a shimmer runs through all of its forms - you can tell that you hurt it, but besides the magic tied to your attack you feel like you didn't affect it as much as your attacks against other such shadow creatures have. Kalaminexperiences something similar as the butt of his glaive impacts one of the humanoid forms connected to the blob. His first swing was a miss, as the form he was aiming at jerked and shifted out of the way before the blade could slice through it.
Every humanoid imitation attached to the creature lets out a shriek as Ilya's smite burns it with divine light. You can almost perceive a shockwave passing through them, and a shudder as the same pain reverberates through each shadow body in the mass.
Glyp, you're up!
Ilyais outlined in yellow so I remember she's in the air.
"If there was ever a time to take one last good shot, now would be it.."Glyp says to himself as he opens his palm once more, the runes on his shell glowing, bursting out and then coalescing into three streaks of light, spiraling their way towards the large mass (c) and slamming into it with a series of rapid pops.
(Action) Cast Magic Missile, all 3 at C, and all 3 rolled 4+1=5 for a total of 15 force damage to the mass (Bonus) N/A (Move) None, staying put
The main body of the conglomeration of shadows shimmers as Glyp's runes strike it. They pull together into a mound, and a large maw opens up letting out a furious roar. The humanoid figures that make up its form begin to jerk erratically, then coalesce and strike out in two directions at once.
One gathered mass tries to slam into Lyra, but the protective spell she cast earlier forces the attack off to the side. Three of the shadowy figures manage to reach up and latch onto Ilya, and she would feel her strength being drained away as the shadows seem to suck away the radiant light she's throwing off.
Strength Drain Attack(C) - Lyra 11, Damage - N/A Strength Drain Attack(C) - Illya 15, Damage - 15, your strength score is reduced by 1 until you finish a short or long rest.
The shadow(B) standing next to Lyra focuses in on its current victim(G3), reaching out to grab him by the throat. His strength seems to simply fail him as he collapses to the ground, unmoving.
"How much must we endure...Lady of Eternal Flame, guide use. Bless us with your radiance. Stoke the fires in our hearts once more. Spur us on to victory!"
And using the last bit of her will, Juno calls forth a final blessing on Ilya, Lyra, and Kal.
A soft aura briefly glows around Juno's targets as her spell takes hold.
The guard (G1) to your left ignores the Shadow(A) behind them, trying vainly to stab the larger shadow monster with a spear. The second, Leftenantand Junowould recognize the armor he wears and the weapon he wields - equipment that is standard to soldiers of the Solari Empire. It looks older, but still kept in good condition. Ilya, you recognize this man as Garrick.
He slashes twice against the writhing mass of shadows, though only one attack seems to land solidly. Even then, it doesn't appear to do as much damage, and the creature largely seems to ignore his presence.
Lyra holds her ground, continuing to thunder her song into the night. Hoping, perhaps futilely that she can coerce the massive undead thing to attack her and not the guards or her other companions, new and newer. She leaves her warhammer at her belt.
Her eyes strobe darkly, and she tries to send a dark beam of energy at the abomination at close range, knowing her hand may be knocked away.
Action: Eldritch Blast at disadvantage due to close range against mass of shadows (C) Eldritch Blast plus Bless to hit at disadvantage: 9 + 2 = 11 Eldritch Blast damage in case of hit: 7 (force) Forced Movement (Repelling Blast) in case of hit: target launched 10' directly away from Lyra NW.
Movement: None unless the above attack hits and pushes the mass of shadows (C) back, in which case Lyra would advance 10' NW to remain in melee.
Bonus Action: none, besides wishing she still had Bardic Inspirations to hand out.
The shadows(C) split apart where Lyra's energy blast would have hit, and the beam of dark energy disappears into the night. On the other side of it, one of the guards(G1) lets out a pained groan as the other shadow(A)latches onto him. He stays standing - just barely - gently swaying on his feet.
Recognizing the divine power poured into Ilya's attack and its effectiveness, Kalamin drives his glaive forward, channeling his own radiant power into the blow. He pulls the polearm back, and flips it around to strike out with the blunt end.
Leftenant recognizes the Solari arms and armor on at least the one guard. He was preparing to leverage that ingrained sense of obeying orders as he issues one himself…then he sees the poor man’s form impailed by shadow. He hopes there’s enough life left in the man as he shouts “Help me take out the smaller ones Soldier! The others will focus on the big one!”
He then shifts his spell to the Shadowed entity (A) by saying, “I name you as my quarry NOW!”He then draws an arrow from his quiver and lets it fly at the creature, hopingto have better effects than the last. As the arrow sails towards its target, LT looks to the towers, trying to see how to access them.
Bonus Action: Shift Hunter’s Mark (Damage:4) Action: Attack: (To Hit: 23, Damage: 6) Other: Colossus Slayer if applicable, (Damage: 4) Move: Half the distance to the tower
Glyp slings his crossbow down and takes aim at the mass of shadows, loosing a bolt towards it and closing his eyes at the last second, hoping that it hits. He then ducks around the corner for a bit of cover.

OoC: Well this messes everything up a bit, I should have been more active. Kal'sfirst attack explodes the thing. Glyp let me know if you had something different in mind of just shifting your tareget. Also LTI presume you were moving Hunter's Mark anticipating this thing dying?
The glowing blade of the glaive disappears into the monster's shadowy mass. A moment later rays of light pierce through its dark form - all of the humanoids attached to it begin to scream at once, and the maw at its center roars. The shadows implode, then explode outward, scattering across the land.
Leftenant'sarrow rips through the shadow(A), scattering its form. A second later Glyp'sbolt takes the remaining shadow(B) in the chest. Lyrawould hear it wheeze, but it manages to maintain its form for now.
Ilya feels the warmth leave her body as the shadows wrap around her, draining what feels like her very lifeforce. And then there's a burst of light below her, and the creature is scattered to the winds. Briefly she whirls around in the air to look down at the man, Kal is what the woman named Lyra had called him. They're all so strong. For the first time in a while, she felt something like relief.
But the fight wasn't over yet.
Turning in the air once more, she dives towards the remaining shadow, ready thrust forward with her dagger again. With the last of her power she pours radiant energy into the blade as she drives it into the creature.
Movement - Down and towards the shadow (B) Action - Dagger to Hit (C):15, Damage:6, Divine Smite(1st Level):10, Radiant Soul:2 Bonus Action -
A brilliant golden light shines from Ilya's dagger as she thrusts it into the remaining Shadow. The radiance bursts through it from the inside, scattering the shadows that make up its form.
As the battle ends, men and women in hastily donned armor carrying spears and shields begin to arrive, running past you to secure the gate.
The older(five years older looking than LT) man who was in the fight points his longsword to the ground, leaning on it as he catches his breath. He glances over your group with a look of suspicion before glancing to Ilya. "New friends of yours?"
"My name is Garrick. I'd say welcome to Vinande, but these times aren't so welcoming." He makes a few quick hand motions to a some of the armed villagers passing by, and they stop. Cautiously fanning out to keep a loose guard of your group. "How the hell did you get here?"
Lyra plays a quick encouraging flourish on her dark harmonica, though her smile is grim and her tone respectful.
"Well met Garrick. Our tale is short, yet too long to do justice given the desperate circumstances. I am Lyra. We five are tortle song-blade and Selenic knight, veteran archer and cleric of light, shadow-touched bard and now," she gestures at each, then turns to Ilya, "soaring angel."
"We first five are near strangers, having been abducted from different places and... times for reasons we cannot fathom. We won free earlier tonight from our kidnappers' transport during a conflict between strange and unknown forces, not far from here, and have been battling undead shadow creatures in your lands continuously since. I hope I speak for my companions in offering that we stand ready to defend Vinande and Silvershard."
Garrick Davenforth; veteran warrior of the Solari Empire, founder of Vinande, military mastermind. Leftenant begins to forms in his head how to address the man commanding the village guard when Lyra elegantly introduces the individuals by poetic adjectives.
“Sir, (Leftenant begins) I’m sure you may not remember…we met once in Neressa shortly after your retirement…in the tavern frequented by Veterans, Fighters, and Warriors (the VFW) I am Lieutenant Leaf Tenanent. Also called Leftenant if you recall.I wish we were calling on you and your village under better circumstances.”
“I would be happy to render our report for the evening when it pleases you…and hear what troubles the lands these last few weeks. We (gestures to the others) have had a harrowing night ourselves and by chance…appear to assist each other…and you with your company.”
At this point LT withdraws his dagger slowly, the intricate weapon he received from his men as a retirement gift. “I present my credentials as proof of my service to the Empire.”
