Pisgah tells the rest of the group about what appears to be a secret door. I will stop to listen at the door for any noises on the other side Perception roll of 8 and then check it for traps Investigation roll of 16 before trying to open the door.
Pisgah hears no sounds and spots no traps, but he does spot a tiny niche with which the door can be opened. So he does and the room lies revealed with a squeak of old door hinges.
It is 20 by 20 feet in size, the ceiling height mirroring that. On the floor, you see a green copper helm with a protective visor, draped in cobwebs. Against the back wall, atop a marble riser, stands a slender throne also made of green copper, also covered in cobwebs. Your old friends the spiders are back, but, luckily, still normal sized.
In the last few seconds before detect magic runs out, Nikk does not see anything magical about either object.
Pisgah picks up the helm and asks Rico, "Do you need extra metals if you have to repair Steel? Unless Jaya would want this old helmet, it may could come in handy."
As you explore down the south corridor, you come across a few bends until you spot a door in the wall. Beyond that, the corridor continues around another corner, where a single humanoid skull is to be seen. Farther south, the corridor eventually stops in a dead end.
Pisgah (perception: 22): As you're confirming the way ahead to be clear of enemies, you spot an almost imperceptible outline on the northern wall of the dead end. Undoubtedly you just stumbled upon another secret door.
OOC: Preyfire, I missed the door on the map, just to the left of the party marker, when I made my other post. Would Pisgah have seen that door?
If Pisgah saw the door he would hand the copper helm off to Rico or Jaya, and then say he was heading back up the corridor to take a look at the other door. He would repeat the same process to look for traps, Investigation roll of 6, and then listen at the door for any sounds coming from the other side, Perception roll of 15. If there are no noises behind the door, and at least one of the other party members is there in the corridor with him, he will open the door.
Pisgah picks up the helm and asks Rico, "Do you need extra metals if you have to repair Steel? Unless Jaya would want this old helmet, it may could come in handy."
Rico takes a quick look and answers, "That would not help with repairing Steel. It could be used as raw material to make brass to repair me. But this is so corroded that it is not worth carrying around. Thank you for thinking of me and Steel."
Nikk: You spot one additional thing: directly above the throne in the ceiling, there is a barely perceptible chute-like portrusion. It looks like made to dispense a thin item, at most five inches in width. It's not obvious as to how it is activated.
Jaya: Putting the helmet on the throne has no effect.
Pisgah: Yes, the door is visible directly. As you spot no traps and hear nothing from that door, you open it. Skulls tumble into the hall. The entire room is filled to the ceiling with the skulls of humanoids. Thousands of them.
As skulls fall to the floor and surround his feet, Pisgah yells "Son of a biscuit!" as he jumps backward into the wall opposite the room and draws his sword expecting an attack. If no attack comes he laughs at himself and calls to the team in a laughing voice, "Ah, I am being silly jumping at a bunch of bones. Come look at this room of skulls. Who would have put them there? Is this a Xanathar Guild thing Nikk?"
Curious. Very curious. While the others carry on about skulls or some such, Nikkitch begins to investigate every inch of the throne. Perhaps this distributed something to those who sat in it, or maybe the helm and throne were part of a martial ritual...?
[Again, Passive Investigation]
[History roll to figure out the trick, if any: 18]
Nikk (Passive Investigation not up to the task, rolling instead: 27): No relevant ritual comes to mind. Trying to put the pieces together, it does strike you that a person wearing the helmet would be somewhat protected from anything falling out of the chute. The construction probably assumes that the helmet is at an approximately human height eyelevel over the sitting surface of the throne. It might also still be magical, as there are spells like arcanists magic aura specifically to mask auras.
OOC: DM, I'm wondering if Pisgah would be familiar with any sort of monster or animal that may keep/bury/hide bones/skulls in part of their den or lair.
"I don't know that they did. I'm thinking the skulls may have been dropped in here from above or thrown in from the other side. I'm going to dig some of these out of the way and start looking around the room. Will you watch my back and keep an eye on the others at the end of the hall?"
Pisgah sheaths his sword and will begin to use his shield to scoop out the skulls from the room. He will scoop a couple of times and then stop to look at the room to see if anything pops out to him or if he notices signs of a hidden passage/door/etc.
Jaya will take the copper helmet and hold it over the throne, at about the height of where it would be if you were sitting on the throne. If that doesn’t trigger anything, he’ll put the helmet on, and if Nikk has no objections, in any voice, he’ll sit on the throne.
Rather than object, Nikkitch quietly backs out of the room. If Jaya looks close, he might see two eyes glittering from under the hood, eager to see something happen. Unbeknownst to him, that something could be either treasure or the Dragonborn being violently impaled, and it would still be amusing to the kenku.
Pisgah: You've heard of troglodytes accumulating skulls and all manner of bones in a show of strength over their enemies, but none of the other signs like the stench and pictographs painted with blood are present. Whom- or whatever did this macabre deed, their method of packing bones in this room remain in the dark. As you scoop out more and more, eventually you come upon some skulls that have golden and silver teeth, probably worth 5-10 gold pieces each. Standing in a pile of bones, you find no other secrets in here.
Jaya: Holding the helmet at eyelevel doesn't seem to do anything. As you sit down with the helmet on, you hear a soft *click* above you. The chute opens and a sticklike object falls out. With a *clonk* it hits the helmet and bounces off, clattering to the floor at your feet. It seems to be an ornately carved wand.
Pisgah collects the gold and silver teeth, popping them out of the skulls, before trying to scoop the skulls into the room and corners off the hallway to clear enough space for the group to walk through. He pockets 3 teeth worth 15gp, hands another 2 teeth worth 10gp to Rico, and takes the rest back with him to split with the others, giving Canti, Nikk, and Jaya 2 teeth each.
Stepping into the room, after handing Canti and Nikk their teeth, he sees Jaya on the throne with the helm. "Hail King Jaya! That looks interesting."
Jaya will try and determine what this wand is. He will try to determine with and without the helmet on. If he is unable to determine, he will offer it to Nikk. “This is probably more suited to you, but I’ll let you determine that.”
