”Yes, yes. A safe for the group’s funds is a capital idea. Someday, we may even get one of those satchels that’s bigger on the inside than the outside.” He dreams.
"While we're at it, we should probably get a strongbox installed here for the group’s funds. No point in leaving such a large sum lying around. What do you all think?"
Sterling raised an eyebrow. "Certainly. That's eventually a necessity for any solid establishment."
He then crossed his arms as he thought for a bit--he'd envisioned situations like this from his youth, including how to secure the justly-earned wealth he might one day accumulate. "We could even ensure at least two people have to be present to open it, by using a combination of 5 locks, each lock having four copies of its own key."
As the others looked his way, he shrugged and then quickly looked away, slightly embarrassed. "Yes, I've given this some thought; nothing wrong with that, right? Anyway, however we want to do it is fine with me. In the meantime, I may have some shopping of my own to do...."
(( @DM - how close are we to leveling up? I'm really eager to give Sterling his subclass. ))
(We could level up now and kick off chapter 3, but I was giving some chance for you to renovate the tavern)
You all make your enquiries, getting the carpenter up to speed on what you require (I would say that figure includes getting you all beds as well. Other furniture will be extra) and going to the guild to make the necessary payments. The Fellowship of Innkeepers will take your fees (including the 10gp per tenday) and make sure that all the other guilds involved get their share to provide you with what is needed. And contacts for them will be paying you a visit soon with some initial deliveries.
You also get any supplies you need for your scarecrow hunting. There was no mention of time of day for the attacks.
((We will be needing a barkeep and a maid to run the establishment when we're not there. And anyway, I think our idea was more to add to the entertainment rather than running it ourselves. Or are these expenses included in the fees for the Fellowship?))

Sorry, I'm beginning to enter a vacation period and while I will try to check-in at least daily, I cannot promise that I will always be able to do so. From September 1, I should be back to normal.
(They are not. But they are on the sidebar I linked with prices. Fellowship are 10gp per tenday. And it is 50gp for maintenance and wages. But also, these 60gp per tenday is what profits go towards. You have a 20% chance to break even, and a 50% chance to make profit (of varying amounts). The other 30% is evenly split between paying half costs, full costs or 1.5x costs.)
Sterling finally made it back to the manor, apparently having used his funds to upgrade his light armor. His new piece was quite similar to his old, in his usual black-and-gold, but with extra metal studs carefully crafted to have the same shape as cut gemstones.
As he noticed the others, he asked, "So, I presume we're finally all caught up on our financial obligations? If that's so, do we want to spend the rest of the day hiring folks, or should we save that for tomorrow and go looking for our terrorizing scarecrow?"

Spending the day making the necessary arrangements and visits to the guilds and shopping to get things started up Toser looks to the others as they gather back at the manor. "I say tomorrow we head out and look for the scarecrow as the work gets started."
Oriace nodded in agreement, pleased with the progress. "Perfect, let’s focus on getting the renovations and guild arrangements squared away today. I’ll check in with the carpenter and oversee the initial deliveries as well. We can all help out where needed to make sure everything goes smoothly, and then tomorrow, we’ll set out to handle the scarecrow issue."
He took a moment to glance around the group, appreciating how quickly they’d organized everything. "Once the restoration is underway, we’ll finally be able to focus on preparing this place to reopen. Hopefully, the renovations will be well on their way by the time we return."
((I'll discount the guild fees (250gp) as I suppose they will have to be paid on the spot. The renovation, I suppose we will pay at the end or in instalments. We could pay 50% upfront and the rest when it is finished?))

Sorry, I'm beginning to enter a vacation period and while I will try to check-in at least daily, I cannot promise that I will always be able to do so. From September 1, I should be back to normal.
Toser grabbed his gear, armor and weapons, and prepared to set out for the area where the scarecrow is reported to be.
Once there he scouts out the area, looking for any scarecrows in fields. He'll approach any farm or farmer where the scarecrow is found to request permission to be on their farm and explain why they are there.
(( I'll presume we got everything paid for, and it's the next day as we head out to find our straw man. ))
Sterling looked around as Toser crossed the field, his eyes scanning for anything suspicious. Jasper sat perched on his shoulder as he did, sniffing the air for odd scents. The bard wasn't expecting to spot the scarecrow running out in the fields--but any sign or clue would be a help, and if nothing else, they might spot a good location to hide and wait for nightfall.
(( If needed, Perception:5 and/or Investigation:22 ))
You make some enquiries and all the scarecrows you see seem ordinary enough. You then find somewhere to watch a few fields and once and spend most of the day waiting. And waiting. And waiting. It is just past noon and you see through the field in front of you, a horse is bolting, being chased by a scarecrow with a rotting pumpkin as a head. (I swear this is not timed to be Halloween themed, this is the module as written). It has not noticed you all yet, and is currently 80ft away (and the horse is about the same, 20ft between the two, but not running towards you)
"There!" pointed Sterling as he leapt up and raced towards the horse and scarecrow. He figured the horse would be fine once it got away, but their quarry had a good head start and was in danger of escaping; they needed to catch him.
"Don't let him escape! We can force him to surrender!"
Sterling will use his Action to Dash and move a total of 60 feet towards the scarecrow, and will use his Bonus Action to give Bardic Inspiration (1d6) to the first ally who dashes up with along with him.
To be more clear as well, they are effectively running along one edge of a field, while you are on the opposite edge. So it is all open, no cover, and its next lot of movement will probably end with it still 80ft away from your starting point (give or take a bit. I am not doing precise distances for these long distance angled spaces)
Toser moves towards the direction the scarecrow is headed. As he does he casts Dancing Lights . 4 torches appear. 1 10 ft behind the scarecrow, 1 10ft in front of it. The 2 others on the far side of it. Trying to force the scarecrow towards us.
Mana quickly assesses the commotion, and sees as everyone springs into action.
Free action; grabs a torch from the small casche the group had made at their stakeout point. He touches it to the small open flame they had been tending.
Bonus action; Bardic Inspiration to Toser as he begins to move.
Movement; 30’ more or less paralleling Toser but not Dashing to keep up with Sterling.
Action; casts Dancing Lights, adding 4 more torches to Toser’s deception. He spreads out his 4 floating lights in such a way that ‘blocks’ the forward progress of the scarecrow and encourages it to turn towards our group.
Oriaces rushes after Sterling and Wagner as fast as his short legs will carry him (dash) while still able to usher telepathically -as to not scare away the scarecrow more than necessary- motivating words to Sterling (BA Bardic Inspiration 1d6).
