Caszimir watches in disdain as his entertainment for the even flees with the rest. Resigned to being annoyed for a while, he sets a long sigh and draws not his blade, but his flute instead. Perhaps some dulcet notes may yet soothe this savage creature...
...then we can stab it death, he muses. Ruin my plans, will you? Hells to that!
Now, a tavern brawl is one thing but a bloody troll quite another. While he can tolerate brawls and doesn't typically do more than discourage the fighters, an attack of a troll is the stuff of songs and one that commands vampire bats no less! "Friends! Let's take him out!" Oriace draws his rapier (or dagger if he can't get in reach) and not quite wanting to get too close and personal with the troll itself, he tries to pick a bat out of the air.
Action: attack a bat, hit: 7 (critical fail) or 22 (if advantage from Faerie Fire), for 7 piercing damage (if rapier, 1st choice), or 8 piercing damage (ranged if melee isn't possible).
Sterling blinked and looked up. Surely he'd heard that wrong? But as he watched the new source of commotion, his eyes widened--nope, he hadn't misheard after all.
Quickly putting his paper away, the bard leapt up, his first thought being toward his familiar. "Fall back here," he telepathically commanded, "and stay out of the way for now." Obviously the little fey creature wouldn't be permanently dispatched if he got stepped on, but without the funds to bring him back straight away, Sterling figured it was better to keep him safe unless his help was absolutely necessary.
He then looked for his companions; spotting them all still alive and kicking, he breathed a sigh of relief as he drew his rapier and dashed into the fray, heading straight for the troll.
(( I'll wait until seeing if the faerie fire catches the troll before rolling to attack. ))

No initiative needed due to group initiative. I rolled both parties and you guys are up before the troll.
One bat creature passed the save. The other two and the troll fail so are affected by faerie fire. Oriace throws the dagger at one affected, which drops to the floor dead.

Taking advantage of the spell cast by Wagner, Sterling rushed the troll and lunged with his blade. "Nice hit, Oriace!" he called out as he attacked. "Trying out for the College of Swords, I see!"
FREE: Draw rapier as part of attack MOVE: Close in with the troll ACTION:Attack troll with rapier * Rapier Thrust - Attack: 19, Piercing Damage: 7 (plus 2 more damage on crit) BONUS: Bardic Inspiration to Oriace
Caszimir begins circling around the others, uncharacteristically warm notes piping from his normally cold flute, an attempt to soothe, or at least distract, the savage monster. He has no intention of getting close.
Durnan shouts at those who have joined "Focus on the Stirges first. You should be able to pick those off easily. And when the troll goes down, find something to light it on fire!" and then he takes 4 swings at the troll with his sword, 2 of them connecting.
Yagra runs to grab her weapons and gets ready to attack next round.
The troll looks quite injured now, but some of the injuries seem to heal up as it takes some swings back at Durnan, hitting him with a claw, missing with a second claw and then biting him. Durnan seems to shrug it off, taking it in his stride.
The stirges (bat creatures) then attack. One goes after Oriace, and the other after Wagner. The one on Oriace misses (14) while the one on Wagner just hits (16) dealing 6 damage, and attactching itself to you. (also, make a concentration check for the spell)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Stirges are weak. That is enough to kill it. (for the sake of determining which one went for you, and therefore if the last one still has faire fire, a 1 had it, a 2 did not. 1)
One stirge left, currently attached to Wagner and drinking his blood. (I also rolled his conc check on the sheet and it passed, so any attack on the troll, and if I rolled a 2 above, on the surviving one, still has advantage)
"Focus on the Stirges first. You should be able to pick those off easily. And when the troll goes down, find something to light it on fire!"
Sterling nodded at the man's advice, and, not for the first time, wondered why someone of his talents had settled on running a tavern.
Quickly dismissing the thought, he looked around for the nearest stirge, and spotted the one trying to feed off Wagner.
"I'll thank you to leave our best fighter alone," he quipped to the creature, mentally focusing his magic onto his words. "We'll probably need him at some point, so... buzz off!!" Immediately critiquing his line, he thought, "Well, not the best, but not too bad. Probably wasted on something this dumb though."
ACTION: Cast Vicious Mockery, targeting the last stirge * VM - Requires a DC 14 Wisdom save to avoid, otherwise it'll do 1 psychic damage.
"We'll probably need him at some point, so... buzz off!!" Immediately critiquing his line, he thought, "Well, not the best, but not too bad. Probably wasted on something this dumb though."
The sound of the flute stops quite suddenly, replaced instead by a loud exaggerated groan and a familiar voice saying, "Ugh. Now I want the troll to win." 'Twas almost as if someone were trying to tell Sterling that was a bad pun, a true stinker.
Oh, whoever would say that...? As if you don't already know. Caszimir thinks snidely.
He resumes playing, his finger work bringing a higher, sharper pitch to his trill, the rhythm picking up as if he were playing a round for battle. [Performance: 19]
The final Stirge seems to have agreed with Stirlingand Caszimir that it was a terrible line. So terrible in fact, that it detaches and plummets to the ground, finding solace in the fact that in death it will never have to hear Stirlingagain.
I will say that Wagnercan use that crit on the troll, moving up and dealing some significant damage to it.
Caszimir continues to play, giving you all some adrenaline (but no mechanical benefit). The fleeing crowd have stopped to watch from a safe distance though, the music seeming to add to their energy, making this a great tale they will tell.
Durnan swings again, going for 4 swings, but after the first one hits it is enough to knock the troll down unconscious. "Quick, we need fire or it will get back up on its feet!" to which Yagra runs over with one of the lanterns, smashing it over the trolls head, the oil catching alight and burning the head a small amount. Durnan stands there pointing his sword at the troll, before being satisfied that it has stopped moving. "You fought well" he says matter-of-factly to the party as he walks back behind the bar, cleans and puts his sword away and then goes back to making a drinks order he had started. Some members of the staff start pushing the troll back down to the well to dispose of it easily.
A figure pushes his way through the crowds to meet you all. “You be adventurers, am I right? I could use your help. Let’s find a table to talk, shall we?” and he goes and sits down. He strokes his mustache, adjusts his floppy hat, and tightens his scarf. “Volothamp Geddarm, chronicler, wizard, and celebrity, at your service. I trust you’ve noted the violence in our fair city these past tendays. I haven’t seen so much blood since my last visit to Baldur’s Gate! But now I fear I have misplaced a friend amid this odious malevolence. My friend’s name is Floon Blagmaar. He’s got more beauty than brains, and I worry he took a bad way home a couple nights ago and was kidnapped — or worse. If you agree to track him down with all due haste, I can offer you ten dragons apiece now, and I can give you each ten times that when you find Floon. May I prevail upon you in my hour of need?”
Oriace was pleased with himself how he already dispatched two stirges and dared a brief look around. He just sees with which heroic grace Wagner plunges his rapier into the troll. The precision of the powerful thrust accomplished by Wagner could have easily dealt with a foe twice the size of his opponent, surely! "That's worthy a song, Wagner! You sure will shine in the College of Swords!"
(Edit: had to take into account the previous post that happened almost at the same time... What coincidence after a 3 days hiatus!)
After the fight with the troll, Oriace will first and foremost look for his dagger that he flung at the first stirge. They are too expensive to let them go missing. When he returns to the table he finds that someone had joined his group of friends and even offers employment. No! A source of inspiration for a story taken from real life!"I'm game for your fine offer, Sir Volothamp Geddarm," he agrees readily. "Where did your friend went missing? We need some place to start from he asks," presuming that his band-friends will join in the venture.
Casz's mind hovers over more than just the gold as he deftly polishes his flute. Beautiful and dumb? I like the odds, he thinks, looking for his entourage to return. Disappointed that they don't, he sighs.
"Don't know about the others, but I'm certainly interested." Given his particularities in sowing as much trouble as coin, the mischievous grin on his face likely isn't great comfort to his fellow troupe members. Too bad the man offering them a job doesn't know this.
The offer of coin had piqued Sterling's interest. And it appeared his companions were eager to jump on the opportunity as well. "Well, I guess it's unanimous then," he said with a friendly smile. "By the way, I'm Sterling. This is Wagner, he's Oriace, and the rapscallion there is Caszimir."
Sterling merely stiffened his smile to avoid it becoming a smirk as he avoided Casz's look in response to his slight tease. He really hadn't had a choice--after all, an honest businessman had to inform his potential associates what they were in for, right?
"Oriace is correct though... it would help to know where you friend was last seen. A description would also be useful. With that, we can set out straightaway."
