Fire ripples across the slimes surface, popping and crackling as steam and smoke rises, filling the room making everything lightly obscured and getting thicker. A strong acrid smell rises up the hatch, tickling at the back of your throats.
Kallith launch's a stone, it sinks into the form causing ripples across its form. Dornins bolt slams into it, it reacts to the blast. As Octo cleaves the slime in half, the ax didn't seem to hurt it but now there are two smaller oozes to contend with.
Kallith, Dornin
The steam and smoke filling the room below makes it difficult to see and target the oozes, You have disadvantage on any ranged attacks.
With Octo trying to stay between the oozes and Chandle, one of them washes over his large bullish form, the other lashes out at Octo with a pseudopod, a second blob striking behind him at the evading Dwarf. The fire ripples across its surface continuing to burn and evaporate the goo. (Oil flask one last round of burning 5 fire damage)
Pseudopod attack against Chandle: Attack: 7 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll. plus 4 Acid damage
Pseudopod attack against Octo: Attack: 17 Damage: 6 plus 4 Acid damage
If it hits, it adheres to you and tries to yank you towards it: Grapple check: 18
If you succeed on the grapple the blob peels off and is pulled back into the ooze. If you fail you are pulled forward 10' and fall prone, with the blob still attached, it acid burns where ever it touch's. Its burning form causes you to take 5 Fire damage.
Heaving black goo against Octo: Attack: 22 Damage: 5 plus 4 acid damage
If it hits it tries to cover and Engulf Octo: Grapple check: 24
The engulfed target is blinded, restrained, and unable to breathe, and it must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw at the start of each of the Oozes turns or take 4 Acid damage.
If Octo is Engulfed he will also take 5 Fire damage from the burning form.
Initiative:
2 Medium undulating Black goo. (Burning and quickly losing size and form)
Kallith is cursing, hesitating with another stone in her hand. She sees Octo whirling through the clouds of steam, barely makes out the shape of the ooze, in so far it even had one. She will only throw a stone when she is certain that neither Chandle nor the minotaur are in the way.
She shouts: "Are you hurt?", using a healing word if anyone answers in the affirmative. Healing: 1d4+3. (OoC: Please roll yourself if you accept the healing, I'm deliberately not rolling now to avoid metagaming).
Magic stone (with disadvantage) to hit : 9, damage: 5 bludgeoning
Chandle sees the appendage and jumps a little too late, she is spun in the air landing on her feet hurt but not grabbed. In retaliation she draws a dagger and launches it at the ooze.
Octo broadsides the pudding, with the vicious slam it discorporate. Its form losing substance, like a popped water balloon it splashes across the floor. The acid has already lost strength as it washes up against Octo and Chandles legs, splashing them with acid (4 Acid damage to Octo and Chandle).
Kallith from above hesitates but in the end launches a stone at the remaining slime, it sinks in causing ripples across its surface, a dagger thunks in, disappearing into the slime as the fire goes out, it also losing its form and splashing along the floor. (Octo and Chandle 4 acid damage).
The pudding is now nothing more than a wet stain upon the floor, several stones, a dagger, a couple steel buckles and a silver ring with a large Garnet are all that remain.
Initiative is over, the immediate danger has passed.
As the ooze is no more, Octo lets go of his rage, skin and fur burning, he sits against the wall for a breather. “Guess we know what killed this poor fellow” he says, looking at the skeleton. “Next black ooze, we listen to Kallith and get the hell away from it!”
Chandle will retrieve her dagger and the other items as well then she heads up and out of the cellar, “My clothes are wrecked… and I stink. For future reference there is a wall down there that is more recent than the rest. Thanks Kallith, I nearly died down there.”
After seeing the goo deflate into nothing but a pool of liquid, Dornin pats Kallith on the back "Thanks for the lift" He stays to help Kallith get Octo and Chandle back up to the main floor. After that, he takes a few steps back towards the fire and sits on the bricked ground. "I think...I think I need to rest for a moment. You know, I am really starting to be sick of being attacked by monsters. A Worg and Ooze try to eat my face and it hasn't even been a full hour yet. I would like to sit here for a while without being some beast's next meal."
Dornin peels a piece of venison from the roast and sips from his waterskin. " I must say folks, for deer this is delicious, cheers. Just let me know when we're going to head out" (Short Rest)
The Eastern wall is bricked over with cut stone and mortar. In fact all of the walls are finished in this way. A small section, about shoulder height to a human has a square of bricked stones. The lines are too perfectly square while the rest of the mortar lines in the wall meander according to the stones used.
Octo will climb up the rope with the assistance of the others and explain what he saw with the wall. He collapses next to Chandler and grabs his own piece of venison, acidic goo still dripping from his horns and legs.
“That was brutal he says” taking a bite out of the meat. “Do we want to go investigate that wall, or head to town? I’m not going to lie; I could use a full nights rest.”
Kallith can't stop herself from guffawing as Chandle and Octo emerge from the hole singed and covered in slime. The humor masking the concern she feels for their wellbeing, she fusses over and uses the little magic she still has to spare. Cure wounds to Octo, for 6 healing. She packs out some herbal remedies and binds Chandles worst wounds as well, for 4 healing + 1 temp hp (feature: Balm of the summer court).
"I think that was enough dungeon delving for today. We can always return later, no?"
Your group sits, eating the last of the venison, the embers dying as the sun begins to dip towards the horizon. Another hour or two and it will fall, casting the land in darkness. The pudding was a horrifying beast, truly, but here above ground you feel, at least somewhat safe. It is a creature of the dark, a horror that remains buried within the lightless realms. You wonder, a creature like that would except no others in its demesne, perhaps the rooms below may not hold any more terrors as you already faced.
Kallith collects several weeds and herbs from around the tower, chewing them into a paste and applying them to the worst of the acid burns, the pain subsides as the juices soothe your wounds. (Regain 2 hp, for whoever endures Kalliths spittle coated herbs)
Chandle fingers the new ring she found, inspecting the intricate cut of the Garnet, the exquisite craftsmanship of the band and setting. The ornament is old, Elven made and holds an enchantment within. The power is strong but not limitless, able to lend its strength to the wielder but once a day. Ring of magic weapon. (Requires attunement)
OoC: Asking to clarify: Are you intending to raise the attunement cap? Normally, a person can only attune to 3 items at once (except artificers anyway).
Kallith happily works on her carving while the others rest. She eventually gets distracted by a squirrel that climbs off into the trees and starts wondering how it must feel like to be able to scale bark so effortlessly. Tiny claws being able to hook into the rough crevasses of the comparatively huge plants. In her daydream, she follows the other squirrel up, her own claws a bit unpracticed and awkwardly placed. The other, a much more practiced climber, quickly disappears out of view.
That leaves Kallith alone, perched on a branch, leisurely looking down at the rest of the party.
Wait, was this still a dream?
Kallith inspects her squirrel hands. A squeak escapes her mouth instead of a curse. She half falls down the tree and hops over to the others. She gesticulates, intending to explain the sudden transformation into an animal. All you hear and see is the exasperated cheeping and weirdly humanlike gesticulating of a squirrel.
Chandle opens her eyes after nearly nodding off, is that a squirrel its hand gestures are strange, and it seems a little odd…
She then sits next to Octo removing her ring she hands it out to him, “Octo you saved my life twice now I’m sure. This ring will enhance your axe. I want you to have it please.”
Dornin continues to sit on his pack relaxing and takes out his pipe and begin to fill it with herbs. He notices the small squirrel that has entered the room and perches close. "What a strange squirrel, it looks as if it's waving, how fun. What do you make of this creature Kallith...Kallith?" He looks back to where he last saw her, noticing she is missing. "Strange, she didn't say she was going somewhere" he thinks to himself. Dornin looks back at the creature, looking at it closer. (Nature:Nat20) "Is..Is that you Kallith?" he says to the squirrel extending his hand out. "If this is you, grab on to my finger". Dornin thinks to himself "Many Firbolgs do come from druid circles and she has the magic to back it up, perhaps she is coming in to her new wilshape abilities"
Octo takes the ring from Chandle, “Thanks. I think Kallith’s healing magic is saving mine. I would pass the ring to her, but it probably makes more sense for me to use it, so I accept.”
Octo puts the ring on his finger, grimacing a bit as he smears some residual acid across his knuckle.
Your group dallies a little too long over the last of the roast venison. The sun sets casting long shadows across the hills. The sound of Octo snoring in the corner decides the matter with Chandle pulling a blanket and following quick behind.
Dornin and Kallith nod in agreement, setting the watch. The ruin as safe a place as any out here it seems. The fire is stoked from the remaining nesting materials as the party settles in for the night.
Dawn paints the Eastern sky with a gentle red hue as the last of your group rouses from slumber.
The squirrel grabs onto Dornins finger, squeaking confusedly. But ultimately, Kalliths wildshape only lasts one hour, so she would turn back eventually, being a bit confused and out of sorts, but knowing more about her own abilities. "Well, that was weird. I saw my teachers do that, but I hadn't quite got the hang of it myself." she explains sheepishly.
As for the ring, Kallith finds it pretty but would not have much use for it herself. But she suggests: "Perhaps I can use it to enhance your axe before we go into battle?" (OoC: as it is a concentration spell, it wouldn't be a good idea for Octo to cast it, as he would immediately lose concentration upon going into rage)
After the rest, Kallith carves a thin slices of the deer she hauled with her from yesterday and roasts them over the fire for breakfast for everyone. She also lets the others know: "If this Ibn Altair group is renowned for subterfuge and stealthyness, we should be relying on all of our senses. Let's be careful. Apart from that, anything you still want to do here?
Chandle gets up a few hours before sunrise nods to Kallith tending the fire and prepping a breakfast. She doesn’t speak though not wanting to disturb anyone else’s rest, she just finds a place to relieve herself and takes in the sights and sounds of a beautiful sunrise.
Once she’s had a chance to eat and everyone has awaken, “I agree assassins just sounds terrible, we should also make haste try to stay ahead of them if we can.”
