Skyeis looking out the window of the warehouse at the retreating guards. "We'll need some twine, or a map. Something to light out way, I bet. And a mug of ale or something stronger, I don't know about you guys but I could use a short rest before we delve into the sewers. And, I'm not sure I'll have an appetite after we've been in there."
Xaul nods and says 'I'll be needing a rest too, we shouldn't worry too much about water as me and Skye are aquatic, but if it's an issue and we're in a pinch I can always Destroy Water like I did with that fog. As for lights, I'm guessing none of us have Dancing Lights? Best we learn that cantrip at some point in our adventures, you never know when things might get dark.'
[Swiftgale, what's the result of my Persuasion check?]
You all take your short rest, and grab the essential supplies (Renaer will foot the bill for torches (he is human so can't see either), rope and anything else that you guys think is essential for checking out the sewers, within reason). You then spend some time wandering around asking people for directions to the sewers. Most people look at you strangely and ignore you. Some run away thinking you must be crazy or criminal. You do find one person who takes one look at you, points down the road in the direction you came from. "That way. Keep following the path you came on. Eventually you will find the sewer if you keep retracing your steps. You might also know it as Home. At least from the looks of you all" and they scoff and carry on.
After a while of asking, Renaer sits down in the middle of the road. "It is no use. We will never find Floon." and he slams his hands on the floor next to him in frustration, and you all hear a clink from his signet ring. As you look down, he is sat right on a manhole cover.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Xaul, even though he did take a short break, is pretty knackered after scanning the streets, and is frankly gobsmacked when Renaer accidentally finds the entrance to the sewers. He ruffles his hair and says 'Guess you have been useful! Let's crack this open!' Digging out the crowbar he remembered he had buried at the bottom of his rucksack, Xaul tries to lever open the manhole, not expecting any traps at all since it's on the open streets and should be managed by the City Council (though it's not like they've done a good job of maintaining the sewers in the past) [Having trouble with rolling on my sheet so I'll roll here if that's alright: Athletics/Strength with Advantage by using his crowbar: 21 ]
Skye idly picks at one ear, and watches as the warlock pries at the manhole.
“Get it up, we got four more of these to service before lunch or Bulo is going to dock our pay, and I don’t think he’s kidding after last tenday,” she lies, for the benefit of any onlookers.
No onlookers are paying you much attention. In fact, they are actively avoiding giving you any. There is no natural light in the sewers. You can all see at first while the manhole is open, but it gets dark very quickly. A putrid stream flows along this sewer tunnel, which leads in two directions. In one direction, you see a tiny symbol drawn on the wall in yellow chalk: a palm-sized circle with ten equidistant spokes radiating out from its circumference.
"Now we've seen the yellow marking, I suggest we put our lights out. Take mine andXual's hands and we'll guide you till we find another arrow we need to mark. We'll go slow and stay quiet. Whispers only." Skye holds her breath, and keeps holding it, not breathing again until she must speak or they're somewhere without such an awful smell. She goes to follow the marked tunnel.
Xaul roughly grabs Renaer's wrist and says quietly 'Kylaski (or whoever's out at the moment), you go with Skye. Damros, I'm sure you can manage by yourself.' He then continues down the marked tunnel after Skye, tugging Renaer along behind him in the gloom.
Sehaethas follows after Skye. grabbing her hand. Realizing he needed to explain his action, Sehaethas said, "Sorry, it seems I didn't inherit darkvision, just pointy ears."
Damros nods to Xaul. With a few tugs on his clothing, Damros soon has a makeshift covering of material that spreads from his nose to under his chin providing some minimal aid against the worst of the stench. Once satisfied with the fit, Damros will work his way down into the sewer.
Once 'down' on solid footing, he will prep his crossbow.
You make your way through the darkness, following the greyscale markings on the walls. After an hour of following signs through the tunnels, you come to a three-way intersection where a ladder leads up into a stone shaft capped by a circular metal cover. One of the familiar chalk symbols is marked on a wall just past the ladder, and floating near the symbol is a spherical, grapefruit-sized creature with a bulging central eye and four stumpy eyestalks. It bares its teeth at you. Those without darkvision, have no idea it is there, and have the blinded condition unless light is created (so attacks at dis, attacks against you at adv).
Party init: 20 Enemy init: 14
If party init is higher, you can attack in any order you like (Renaer (and any future DM controlled ally, even if it is me botting a player while they are away) will go last, just before I do the enemies turn), if enemy is higher, I will post a new post with their first turn.
Damros groans as he spies what is ahead. Though small, he has run into similar creatures when he served the Raven Queen in the Planes.
Stepping to the side for a clear view of the creature and to avoid his companions, speaks his word of power as his hands make an arcane gesture. A beam of crackling purple black energy streaks toward the creature.
Xaulgrowls at Renaer 'There's a little floating beast ahead, stay back unless you feel confident enough to join the fray. I'm sure us darksighted folk can handle this ourselves' He peers intently at the creature and it sparks a recent memory in his head, since it looks awfully similar to the model creature in the window of Old Xoblob's shop, or whatever that weird purple place was. Xaul also wonders if it could be captured and tortured for information. To the party members that are sighted and fighting, Xaul shouts 'I'm gonna try and grapple this little guy before we kill it, then we can see if it knows anything, or if it can talk at all. Shouldn't be too hard since it's so small!' He then lunges at the beast and then tries to grab and wrangle it into his chest like he's catching a netball, cursing the fact that his tentacles aren't corporeal enough to restrain creatures whilst he rolls in the filth trying to apprehend the creature.
Athletics check to grapple the Gazer: 13. Can it please make a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) Check. If the result is lower than Xaul's check, it is grappled, if not, nothing happens.
Xaul nearly gets a grip on the little guy, but he just slips away past him.Xaul curses and gets back off the soaking wet and filthy floor, now separated from Renaer.
Skye waits go see the outcome of the grapple then points her hand towards the strange creature. A gust of wind conjures a cloud that strikes out at her foe before dissipating in a peal of thunder.
