Damros' shoulders slump after the release of his blast. Turning slowly, he walks over to the body of Skye and scoops her up in his arms.
STR check: 18
He slowly walks away from the docks and back to the 'home base' tavern. He remembers there is a potions and alchemy shop near 'home' perhaps he can scrape together the coin for a healing potion.
Damros is able to carry Skye back. It is dark so you don't get many strange looks. Most people you pass assume she is likely just passed out drunk (as she is clearly alive, just not conscious).
Xaul, you mentioned getting proof due to your ability to stay underwater. As you get closer to the body and start examining it, you notice a few things. Firstly, he has a strange contraption tucked into his belt (A pistol. You may have heard of them, but it is unlikely if you come from around the sword coast). Secondly, with the water connecting you with the body, you sense some tingling. Almost like a faint bit of magic. It gets stronger the closer you get to the drows feet. You are pretty sure that the boots are magical.
Xaul, whilst underwater, gives a bemused expression on the discovery of the pistol by the drow's side. Being of a rural background, he simply thinks What in the sevens seas is this? Looks like good metal though, could sell for a bit of coin. I'll show the others. He then pockets it, and is drawn to the boots, tugging them off the drow's feet and giving them a closer examine, though his magical knowledge is far from ideal. [Arcana: 8] Like the gun, he'll put it away to be shared with the others later, not risking wearing them yet in case of a curse on them or the like, and then tries to search the corpse for any less obvious items tucked away, such as money, or any forms of identification/keepsakes that look as if the drow wouldn't willing part with them, although the low light and seawater makes it near impossible. Although the end of the murders is good enough proof of their actions, Xaulwants to make sure the gang gets their fair pay from this mission, so will gladly take anything and everything from the drow that can be used as evidence of his defeat. Well, that is all except body parts, since Xaulhas no interest of tearing an arm or the eyes out a corpse and then having to sneak them down the street. [Investigation: Nat 1 for a total of 2]
There isn't much to take from the corpse. There is the pistol, a pouch with 20 bullets, and 4 waterproof pouches of smokepowder (which is unfamiliar. And won't work while wet), his blade and the boots. You could take the rest of his clothing but it is quite nondescript so won't be much use. You can also get a good look at his face for a description.
Damros stumps down the steps back to the main drinking and dining area after placing Skye on her bed. He had waited beside her; making certain she was breathing comfortably before making his retreat.
As was his habit in the past, he speaks his mind outloud to lay out the puzzle pieces and help focus his thoughts.
"A simple job. Stop a mugging or murder... simple." He sighed. "Now we wait to see if we killed the right person or if we face a cadre of killers. Our happy little band won't last long if that's the case."
"We also need a healer or a never ending supply of healing potions. I might have to go next door and make a deal with that apothecary... or was it an alchemist? I need to see them in the morning either way."
"I left the others at the dock. That was wrong but, Skye needed to be out of danger. I cursed at Sehaethas... or Kylaski... or whatever they go by. That is on me. I let the moment derail my focus and judgement. I need to apolgize when.. or if.. they return."
"I suppose I should change into dry clothes and see what damage my midnight swim did to my equipment. But first, I should put a kettle on to boil."
Damros slowly stands while looking down at the dripping mess he made of the chair. "And I need to clean that up..."
As Damros looks at the dripping mess, it freezes, and then flies off the chair towards Damros. Make a dex save, DC8. 1 point of cold damage on a failure, nothing on a success.
Damros watches as the water puddle at his feet suddenly freezes over and then shoots off the chair and floor at him. Luckily, instinct kicked in and he avoids the ice shards as he twisted, tucked and rolled aside. Gaining position, he tips over a nearby table to use as a shield 'just in case'. As best he is able, he will try to see who or what triggered this cold attack.
Xaulwalks in the door just in time to find Damros cowering behind a chair, his eyes darting about the room, and shards of ice all across the floor. 'I was only gone fifte- you know, never mind.' He walks over to the table, and dumps out everything he found, asking Damros as the only member nearby 'You know what any of these things are? The boots are magical, I've got no clue what they do and I couldn't figure anything out, but maybe you could take a look and see.’ He then swirls the pistol about his finger as he points to the bullets with his free hand, saying 'Both this and those could sell as good scrap, I'm not quite sure what they are but the metal is fine enough. There's also a few packets containing something or the other, ash by the looks of it, and also his blade, which is no use to me, so if anyone else can use it, it's up for grabs. Else we can sell it to a smithy like the rest of the metal for some coin.'
(dmg says handling a magic item is enough to know it's magical. I just made it slightly thematic for you being underwater with a watery based patron. Nothing exceptional about the magical aura)
[Ohh that’s interesting, I never knew that, mainly because in previous games I’ve played the DM has either just told us the item and its properties from the get go to simplify things, especially if it isn’t significant, or instead they have overlooked that rule and neglected to tell the party about if an item is magical or not, and instead wait to see if the party checks if it is before revealing its nature. Both those systems work but having magical items be clearly magical but unexplained is a much better system, thanks for making me aware of it!
Anyway, I’ll tweak my post to scrap the aura part and just say it’s clearly magical!]
(as I understand it, the benefit of detect magic is that you can tell something is magical from a distance compared to having to touch it, as well as identifying magic traps. And identify or a rest focused on the item can tell you what it is.)
Damros sets the table and chairs back upright. "This place hates me. It turned my drippings into ice and shot spikes at me."
He walks over to look at what Xaul dumped on to the table. "I can't tell you anything about those boots but, I know what you mean. You can sort of 'feel' they aren't typical boots."
He prods the pistol like it is a snake waiting to strike. "When the Raven sent me on assignments, I walked in many strange lands. I saw something like this once or twice. They can be deadly in trained hands. Or kill a fool who has no idea what they are doing. You might get more from some weapon specialist rather than some smithy looking for scrap."
"I need to get into dry clothing... and check onSkye. She was sleeping but, I have no potions that might help her recover. I am hoping I can talk to the potion peddler behind the tavern -- maybe sweet talk them into at least one healing potion for a promise and a prayer."
(I’m just waiting for an hour to pass before she wakes up right?)
(correct. And between the time taken to carry you back, and the discussion going on in the taproom, I will say the hour will be up about now, so Skye is conscious but on 1hp)
Damros spiesKylaski as he heads for the stairs. He turns about and heads to intercept them on the main floor.
"Kylaski,I owe you and your 'other' an apology for cursing you in the middle of the chaos. It was a tense moment but did not warrant me invoking the Raven upon you. If SHE does appear in your life, tell me and I will intercede as best I am able." Damros gives a low bow.
Xaulgrins as the pair makes up and says 'Well aren't we such a happy family!' He then looks to the pistol and says to Damros 'If you reckon a weapon specialist is best, then that's where I'll take it! I'll take the metal pellet things and the powder with me too, they might recognise them as well.' His eyes stray towards the boots, desperately wanting to put them on, but acknowledges that it'd probably be better to speak to the whole party on who should wear them first, and then have everyone on alert for if things go wrong. He's probably being overcautious, but you never want to take risks with magic murderer shoes.
