Borvnir grins at the sound of clinking coins coming from the pouch, and has no interest in the boots (as evident by his un-shoed clawed feet), but is more intrigued by what could be in the packet. He is, by no stretch of the imagination, a reader, but curiosity gets the better of him. Using his claw like a package opener, he opens a slit at the top and removes the contents to examine.
A captain's log is in the waterproof packet. It has a strange object made of a couple locks of hair tied around two small finger bones. It marks the last entry in the captain's log, which reads, "Our journey is ended, though I fear my own is to continue in the most horrible way imaginable. Compass Rose wrecked on a shoal south of Neverwinter. Many sailors perished with the initial impact, and Aleitha was gravely injured. As I tended her wounds, she clutched her talisman and breathed soft prayers. I asked her what the talisman signified. She told me love. Her husband waits for her at Dragon’s Rest, having pledged his service to the dragon there. The talisman is made from locks of their hair, woven together as a promise to be reunited no matter what fate might befall them. It might have been a beautiful story, had it not been for Aleitha’s gruesome end—and the words of the prayer I heard as she breathed her last. For she was begging Orcus, the Prince of Undeath, to reunite her with her husband.
I held her hands as the breath left her, and I felt a horrible chill pass through her. Next I knew, she was sinking her teeth into my neck. At the same moment, I heard moans begin to rise from the dead sailors all around us. What curse has she brought on us all?
Already I feel a creeping chill overtaking my body. I am securing her talisman with this book in my chest, in the hope that someone who comes after us may end this nightmare by bringing Aleitha’s talisman to her husband."
Borvnir huffs as he takes in the contents of the log. It’s heavy stuff, but what intrigues him most is the story of other followers of Orcus like him. He makes the obvious connection that the ‘bookmark’ is in fact the talisman of Orcus, and decides that it’s better in his hands then it is in Aleitha’s husbands, especially if returning it to him stops the zombies. That’d definitely put him out of favour with his god. He tries to slip the Talisman into his pocket, in feigned absentmindedless, but is obviously far to intrigued in it, as he very clearly stows it away (Sleight Of Hand: Nat 1 for a total of 2). Borvnir picks up on the glances from others, but decides to ignore them and instead passes the log onto somebody else to read. As he hands the log off to whoever wants to read it next, he thinks ‘If they pick up on the talisman, just play dumb and pretend you didn’t notice. Then we can go from there’
Irtos is eager to look at the book, After she skims the last entry, she announces to everyone else, "It looks like if we return Aleitha's totem to her husband that might stop the zombies. It seems Aleitha is trying to reunite with her husband even after death. The totem is made of locks of hair woven together."
Roll to see if Irtos noticed what Bovnir pocketed: Perception 22 I assume that means she does notice.
"In fact, the bookmark you put in your pocket might be it!"
Borvnir fakes a double take, and putting a claw into his pocket, removes the Talisman. He then says in his thickest voice ‘Oh yeah…you might be right!’ [Deception Check to fool everyone into thinking he didn’t know what the Talisman was: 19]. He then says ‘If this needs to be returned to this woman’s husband, I’ll keep hold of it to return to them when we get back to shore. I’ve already got it on me after all, so no point in anyone else taking it’ [Persuasion: 15]
[We’ve got the captains office upstairs but then I think that’s about it. Then we’ve got to reunite somebody with some little goobers in a grotto or something, I can’t quite remember]
[Went back and found we need to talk to somebody called Tarak about his connection with the myconids of Seagrow Caves which have been recently have been broken off. I’d imagine they’ll be some other things that also come from our excursion to the shipwreck as well]
Cherry brushes off Borvnir's ignorance of the what talisman was as simple ignorance. But she raises her eyebrow when he suggests he keeps it. "With how important that is, laddybuck, I think it'd make more sense to keep on someone less inclined to getting gnawed on by ghouls." she says. Looking at Irtos she eyes the kobold cleric. Her hesitancy with dragonkin still remained, but Irtos had showed herself a reliable companion. "Perhaps our cleric could handle it?"
Persuasion: 9 //don't remember, but I don't think she was proficient
As ZinZax looks over the boots she thinks about the struggles of getting her kids to keep their boots on. Reminiscing for a moment she gets back to the situation at hand. "Might make sense to dry those out first. Wet boots and socks have a tendency to make blistering easier, not lessened."
Lothar speaks up "I can preform a ritual to detect magic! Place your questionable items around me."
He ties a cloth over his eyes and sits with his legs crossed. Begins whispering his ancient tongue while rocking back and forth, twirling the beads on his focus.
Borvnir grumbles but agrees with Cherry’s point, laying out the talisman alongside the boots to be examined by Lothar for magic, to then be taken by Irtos. ‘I can always steal it back’ he thinks.
Borvnir shrugs and goes ‘Well, that settles it. Here, Irtos, you can take this’ He then hands over the talisman, but doesn’t let go for a couple seconds, awkwardly tugging on it as Irtos tries to take it, before letting it go.
The pouch has the distinctive clinking sound of coins. The packet has something hard inside, like a book.

Zin would take a look at the boots, never overlook footwear. He’s gone barefoot in the past and never wishes to be without boots or shoes again.
Make me an investigation or Arcana check.

Any areas left to explore here? Zinzenzak will try and see if the boots will fit. Other then that he is ready to head back…

Zinzenzak places all his possessions out for Lothar to check including the boots, if he can get them back off.

The talisman has powerful necromancy magic attached to it. The boots are clearly magical, though the school of magic can't be ascertained.
